lovely work, lol you were on the windows last time I looked, just where is my time going to, I had to giggle when you were talking about the rudder pins and needing a bigger scale next time, and the same discussion would be brought up on some detail that we hadnt even thought of

GLakie reacted to xken in USS Constitution by xken - Model Shipways - Scale 1:76.8
Had a great fun Easter weekend with the grand kids decorating eggs and then the egg hunt in the backyard yesterday. I was able to finish gluing in position all the gun deck cannons.
Here they are in place.
I then needed to locate the in haul eyebolts for the cargo hatch area. The photos of the restored ship do not show these; so I had to sort them out by using a cannon in the reload position and factor in the tackle blocks. I then made a strip to fit between the truck wheels and drilled a guide hole. I drew a centerline on the strip to align with the eyebolt in the gun carriage for positioning and drilling.
I had to add the ladders in position to locate the last eyebolts adjacent to the wood support post that will lay in front of the ladders. I am sure these were positioned to avoid tripping and are shown in one of the photos of the ship. I also added the deck plates at the bottom of the ladders made of .005" brass sheet and added the bolt heads by using a center punch on the backside on a steel plate which provides a great looking head.
I positioned the pinnace in place and quickly saw that the support will need to be rebuilt using thinner stock and the brackets will need to align with the framework structure to allow removal of the grates.
Now back to gundeck work on cargo framework and grates.

Thanks for the likes, the comments, and the ideas.
Carl, I think you might be onto something. I never thought about coming in from the top. I'll take another look this week and see.
Pat, I seem to recall that build also... too many years ago,.. <sigh> Oh yes, I'm logging the lessons.
Here's the rudder in it's not quite or maybe it is, final form. (Rudder coat notwithstanding). I've added the strop and the chains. Now that's back in it's jig, I'm going to attend to several things... the rudder coat install from the top, the carvings <takes a deep breath>, the quarter galleries, and a bit if finishing up the sanding on the inside of the hull.
And the pictures. I'm pretty happy with it even with some issues that the macro brings up..

So we can expect a lot of Vasa builders in the near future. At least a lot of people starting this kit
I know the booklets provided with other kits like the HMS Victory and these are provide with good instructions and a lot of historical information.

From Fred H on the Vasa Forum site (PS: his link does NOT work) so found other sources just above.
Hello all!
I am pleased to be able to let you know that there is a new wooden kit of Vasa now available in some European markets. It is a plank-on-bulkhead kit in scale 1:65 (finished length 109 cm). It is a partworks format, where you subscribe and receive a few pieces each week or month (depending on the market) over a three-year period. The kit was developed by an Italian company, deAgostini, who specialize in this sort of partworks approach, with the kit design and production carried out by Artesania Latina of Malaga, Spain (actual production of parts in China). The kit is being released in Scandinavia by Editions Atlas in a subscription format; it is available in Italy at newstands or by subscription. For more information, seewww.editionsatlas.se/collection/VBU/Majestatiska-vasa.html.
You will see there that the model was developed in cooperation with our museum. In reality this means that we provided the most current digital documentation of the ship and assisted in the kit design, as well as providing text and illustrations for the written material that accompanies the kit. I will be building it as it is released, and will try to post here about it.

Jesse,
Great job on the Syren. Here is a link on how to make a small lathe using a power hand drill. It's cheap and works. I made it and use it to cut canon barrels and taper masts and yards. Put a foot long dowel or square stock and you can cut several pieces in one set up.

Hi Greg - thanks once again! I love working at this scale, because it all fits in the palm of your hand. Easy to store and display. Stay tuned for more photos over the next few days!
Thanks Denis! She's getting there!
Hi Greg - gulp! Now you've got me worried! I'm sure I got the scale right....
Thanks John - your comments are great and I really appreciate them! Thanks also, for finding that remote! I won't let it go now....
Thanks David.. I really appreciate your comments. I also hope you're well, because I've noticed that you've been a bit quiet lately.
Thanks for saving my bacon, Frank! I was sure that I'd gotten the scale calc right, but knowing me, anything is possible. Thanks also for letting me know about your new project. I'm looking forward to following along.
All the best, everyone!
Cheers
Patrick

GLakie reacted to _SalD_ in US Brig Syren by _SalD_ – FINISHED - 3/16" scale
Just small update. Finished all the yard arms and hopefully attached all the required blocks and pendants. And then....
raised my first yard!!
I pinned the yard to the mast as described in the manual but only glued the pin to the mast so the yard is free to move, just not vertically. Tying the truss around the mast was, lets say, an exercise in patience. Should've of done this twenty years ago when the fingers could move a bit more without cramping up.
One lesson learned was that I made the sling on the mast a little too long so there's not much of a lanyard between it and the thimble on the yard.

I also would like to keep the wood look. I started experimenting with powdered water soluble dye. It adds the color but still leaves the wood grain. I will experiment to see how dark I can go and still have the wood grain show.
I also have ebony but until I get a worktable set up in my shed I hesitate to use it.
I will experiment more when I finish the belaying pins and move on to the cannon.
Richard.

GLakie reacted to cog in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Mark,
Re the rudder coat (thought it was an apron, but that proved wrong) ... couldn't you make a sleeve which at one end is inverted - to make a rounded bottom - and push that down the top of the rudder trough the 'hole' (keep on forgetting those names, darn foreign nautical terminology) ... I would use something like musseline or rice paper (the type used for shoji - Japanese sliding doors e.g.) ..
Cheers

Oh Glenn.... I'm mortified.... simply mortified
Actually I had not realized the rods were that small a diameter, and if you mentioned the diameter in the text I missed it because of the impact of the pictures. And who need to struggle with 000 x 120 anyway.

GLakie reacted to Mahuna in Majellan by Omega1234 - FINISHED - 1/200 - Luxury 37 m Motor Yacht - Miniature
Hi Greg and Patrick
A meter is 39.37 inches, so a 37 meter yacht should be 1457 inches (121.4 ft). 1457 Inches at 1:200 scale would be 7.285 inches, so Patrick is right (why am I not surprised?). (I learned inches to a meter back in basic training eons ago - never forgot it, but this is probably the first time I've ever used it!)

Not sure if I should do without serving the ends, might be neater. Will try that way on second yard and see how it looks.
