I formed mine using a like size dowel. I do believe I cemented the hull edge in place and folded it inward after it was dry. when the rudder was set in place, it gave the appearance that it was connected to the rudder. good idea to occupy yourself with something else.........it will give you more time to think of a solution. you'll come up with something......I'm sure of it

Build and learn in the extreme hey Mark I hope you're logging these 'lessons learned' - sadly i didn't and will probably repeat a few (another lesson learned ). I am sure you will find a solution to your collar issue when you least expect it. I am also recalling a muuch rum befuddled memory from MSW 1 (I think) where someone used the inner foil from cigarette packets for this task also???
cheers

Hi Mark, you're doing a fine, fine job, love the glazing effect in the stern lights.

Hehehe! Thanks Mike. I kept blaming myself for losing the remote, but now I find that you're responsible for casting it adrift. Oh well, maybe when Majellan's finished, we could set sail to your East Coast to find it. Now, that'd be fun! LOL.
Hi Elijah. Thanks! The galley's coming along rather nicely, too, although there's still lots of work to go. It certainly has its challenges, that's for sure.
Hi Bob. By my reckoning, she should be about 1:200 scale, but, knowing me, I could be wrong!
Cheers and all the best everyone!

Thanks for the likes, comments, and suggestions including those via PM.
After many attempts and much aggravation, I'm giving up on the rudder coat. I've learned a few lessons on this and presumably the time spent counts towards the 10,000 hours that Druxey mentions.
I've tried silkspan, paper, cloth, even foil. I considered sculpy clay and may still try that but for now... I'll move on. It boils down to at this moment, there's not enough room to work. I went too far on the stern build out and rudder installation.
The lessons..
1) Think not just 100 steps but a 1000. When I planked the counter, I put on Wipe-on-Poly.... errr.. no. Should have waited. (Not thinking far enough ahead). Possibly I needed to sort the rudder coat at this time but definitely before fitting the rudder into place.
2) When I buildt the rudder, the pins on the rudder irons should have been a bit longer and tapered before soldering up the irons. (Lack of knowledge.. need deeper research early on).
3) By tapering the pins and opening up the recesses in the rudder, the rudder could be removed and re-installed easily. (Doooh... moment).
Anyway, for now, I'll take a pass, not worry about it but continue to think. If I get an "ah-ha" moment, I'll add it later.
Meantime, I'm adding the strop and the chains.

I'm a little behind in my posting, because I've had some computer issues that have kept me from accessing or using my photos. Hopefully, all is resolved now.
The topsail yard has now been fitted out, mounted and rigged. As with the lower yard, the fitting out included adding the foot ropes, blocks, the yard portion of the halliard, the lifts, the clews and the braces. With all of that completed , I mounted the yard to a pin on the topmast and completed the rigging. This involved running the halliard through the masthead sheave and then adding it's tackle, running the lifts through blocks seized to the masthead, completing the clews and adding the sheets which were then run down through the sheaves in the lower yard and running the braces through a block hooked to an eye at the bowsprit tip.
From here, it is on to the gaff and boom.

Beautiful, Patrick. And here I am thinking that some of what I'm trying to do is "too small".... yikes!
BTW, I found the remote but sneezed. For all I know, it's floating around on the wind currents and headed to the east coast of the States.

Thanks Greg,
I've never seen this page before. I've been looking for a good source for fasteners smaller than 00-90. I have a feeling I'll be using this site in the future.

Nice job on the carronade Jesse! Steve's got a good idea with using a template as a guide!

JesseLee,
You need to paint them first with a very diluted primer, sand it after drying (you may want to repeat this step), and again with a normal primer and sand it with a very fine sand paper, or nail polisher stick. After that you can paint them in which ever way you want ... maybe a mixture of gunmetal and black ... try it out before you apply it to the carronades
Cheers

Absolutely fantastic. You say it's approximately 7", have you ever figured out what scale that is?

Richard, I have been thinking about that. I'm wondering if they will still look like wood even when painted. If so is there some easy way to make them appear more like metal? Maybe paint them with a metal paint such as silver or brass or copper first? I also have noticed how much better blackened metal looks compared to black painted.. Wondering if there is some paint mixing method of making the black paint look more like blackened metal.

Hi George, Pete and Frank
Many thanks for your comments. I must admit that I'm really liking the way that she's turning out....and to think I almost gave up and abandoned the whole project at the start of the construction, because it looked too difficult. I guess it just shows what a bit of perseverance can do.
All the best!
Cheers
