GLakie reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thank you for the "likes" and the comments.
Well.. to paraphrase Clement Moore... "The rudder was hung on the sternpost with care in hopes that I won't pull out my hair". Yeah.. bad verse.. Oh well.
This part took some sorting out on exactly how to hang it properly rather than sort of cobbled like I did the kit models... Thank heavens for the Optivisor as the holes for the bolts were pretty tiny. I've half a mind to build the next one at 1:48 or 1:36 even just so I can see without eyestrain. Like the Admiralty would be receptive to that.
Next up will be the rudder coat (hopefully), the strop, and the chains. Thanks to seeing Giampero's rudder coat, he gave me some ideas on how the Licorne's should look.
Anyway, pictures.....

Hi Jesse -
More thoughts after reading comments by recent reviewers. The carronade barrels from Blue Jacket are $3.49 each times 16 with shipping comes to over $60. Whether this is a lot or a little depends on the circumstances of individual modelers. It is about a third of the price I paid for the entire kit. These are better than the barrels supplied in the kit but are not perfect. As SalD shows on page 15 of his build log, the part on the back that the elevating screw passes through needs to be added, and the lug on the bottom needs to be re-shaped. Too bad Chuck Passaro does not offer some nice replacement brass carronade barrels for the SYREN kit at a reasonable price... Notice that the barrels he shows in the "Instruction Manual" look much nicer than those we got.
Some folks suggested turning the barrels from wood. Nice idea. I wish I had the skills and the lathe to do it. If I did, I might be tempted to machine them from brass or aluminum.
So here we are. I will be interested to see which alternative you select. Good luck.

A great life philosophy, Nenad. Let the spice flow and savor the moment.

When I look at the plans I thought the same thing, but I added a word to the clustered which I can't print here. LOL

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement!
David I was looking at your build and was wondering what you used for the transom stars?
The installation of the cannons has started; I will be doing them in batches to break up the boredom and give the eyes a break at the tedious tying off of the eyebolts. The first challenge was the drilling of the eyebolt holes with all the upper deck structure in the way. I again fell back on past experiences and made a long drill handle by gluing a 1/32" drill bit into a length of 1/16" tube long enough to reach across the deck going through the gunport. Once the holes drilled I first glued the eyebolts in place and let the glue set. The I positioned the barrel into the gunport covers to center the cannon in the gunport, positioned the front wheels against the planksheer and added a touch of CA to the wheels and trunnion to hold the cannon in place. This is why care must be used in gluing the trunnion straps in place and allow the barrel to move in the straps. I am using the planksheer for consistency of positioning.
Now back to installing the cannons which will keep me busy for a few days.

At present ... no, not really ...however, if your bobtail starts bumping into furniture and other things you could give him a red and white banded stick ...

They are nice looking boats. You are off to a good start. Your right about the plans. They are about as cluttered as I have ever seen. I'll sit on my rope coil if you don't mind.

I suppose, Michael, on the same way we did, 40-50 years ago, when we had hair during Hippy movement
Can you imagine me trying to be wild, playing electric guitar imitating Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmoor etc etc with hair under shoulder and hair bangs until my nose ? That phase lasts only 2 years (16-18) until I come to my mind. And believe me, you can see everything you want to see

You are right Patrick ! Pics will follow !
I can`t wait it, Denis !
As I read, you are right, Mark.
I am not intend to grown dog for exhibitions and shows ... as a Princess Persian cat which has genealogy papers better than all members of MSW together ... Adrian the Cat is, as a Bobtail will be, our friend and, on some way, a member of family. Admiral is gone, Hothead (25) is in another city plans to find his fortune somewhere in Europe or in the world right away when finish study and master of architecture, Princess (27) finished her study of medicine and has steady job, and this days she said that she is thinking about her independence, which is quite all right and I support her in that direction (she works, has empty flat), and I do not want to be alone until life eventually comes with some solution
Thank you Denis for nice word. Eh ... if I had this passion and patience at the beginning ... life must go on, and a "Show must go on" . we live today, we can not live in the past, and we will live tomorrow. So, use a time you have today and tomorrow to fulfill your life with nice things

JesseLee,
That's a hughe difference!!! You might want to take George's and Don's advice, although Sal's method is quick and easy ... That's a tough one ...
