  1. Friend of mind just started building this from scratch using plans purchased in Italy.
  2. In section 11-7 the instructions say to "...apply the pore sealant..." onto the photo etched parts before painting. Have never heard done this and did I find anything applicable / useful on the Google. Any suggestions on what this pore sealant is?
  3. Wow! Gaetan, How much will your ship weigh once completed?
  4. Just received a pair of Carson Pro, $34 cdn., (on a recommendation from vossiewulf see link below), because having something I could use over my glasses appealed to me. Have not used them for ship work yet but they are comfortable from just trying them out.
  5. Only managed to get to England once before (on business) and didn't have any time for personal sightseeing. The client I was supporting did take my on a flight over the beautiful countryside including the track at Silverstone and on a tour of Windsor castle. Was a real adventure learning to drive on the opposite side of the road. A stop at HMS Victory is on the schedule but not sure if we will be in London long enough for Cutty Sark as the Admiral has other plans.
  6. Was planning a trip to England next year but my wife keeps putting her retirement off so we might take a trip to British Columbia next year instead, have family on Vancouver Island. Only local short trips this summer after going to the Caribbean this spring.
  7. Have you added the final hull planks? It's been very bad year for forest fires on the Pacific coast in British Columbia. Where I am in Quebec is record wet month & cooler than it is usually at the end of July with a 14C low last night, average is 16C. They have drought conditions in the prairie provinces (mid-country, we're a huge country) but not much to burn there, just wheat, so I might be in a global warming sweet spot at the moment.
  8. Suggest completing the above main deck planking and cut out the gun ports before varnishing to avoid damaging the varnish.
  9. Welcome Derek, You are in the right place to increase you're enjoyment building ship models. You'll see incredibly beautiful models here plus there's always someone available to support your progress towards building you're own.
  10. Fascinating and somewhat clandestine Ken, can't wait for the full story on the find.
  11. Was able to order from the link Messis provided and they adjusted the normal shipping rate down, which was very much appreciated. They have a "distributor" here in Canada but they don't sell the primer. Used it on the main deck cannons but didn't notice all that much difference with the Tremclad I have been using. Shipyard has been on summer hours due to the heat and dock worker partying.
  12. Hi Daniel, welcome to the best website in the explored universe.
  13. Welcome aboard. Can we have your name and where you are from?
  14. Thanks for the info. Damn stuff appears to be made in Canada (Winnipeg, Manitoba) but doesn't look at all easy to buy here? It's about $20 on Amazon.ca but ships from the US so comes to $39 with shipping. There's a Canadian site selling it for 6 bucks but they have a minimum order of $25. Going to check out some local stained glass stores before trying to buy online.
  15. Welcome to MSW Vic., please don't be shy to share your victories, trails and tribulations. The group of ship builders sharing here are very friendly and you won't find a group with more knowledge and experience anywhere else.
  16. The picture of the interior is at least twice as wide as it is high, which doesn't seem to fit with the dimensions provided...."The total area represents about 4.25" x 5.5"? Is this a real Spirit interior? Could give you the methods and estimates if it was full size interior but shrunken down to this size, have no experience with that. http://spirityachts.com/spirit-yachts/gallery/interior-gallery/
  17. Welcome Steve, please give us a picture of your Phantom after repairs are made.
  18. Welcome back Ken, nothing better than retirement to empower model makers!
  19. Does anyone know if there were stoves purpose designed/built for use on sailing ships or did they use those used on land?
  20. Hi Shoosh, welcome to the best website in the Milky Way. In addition to checking out the "How To" parts of the forum, go into the Build Logs for SHIP MODEL KITS section and do a search on "HMS Victory". You'll find quite a few build logs in progress plus many completed builds. Once you see what's entailed you may want to consider an easier ship for a first try at this type of modeling. It's not like plastic models where you simply assemble a bunch of parts. Whatever you decide to do, the people here from all over the galaxy are very helpful and friendly so don't be shy.
  21. Mount your plans...I wish, lucky if I know where they are. Looks like its time to vacuum the shipyard.
  22. Ken shall repair his stern, whatever the cost may be, he shall paint in the bin, he shall hold the brush steady, he shall repair in the fields and in the streets, we shall repair in the hills; he shall never surrender.
