Nice progress Mark and who cares about a little sanding, you get paid by the hour - - - - right?
Cheers,

great to see some planking going on.....I like the changes you made to the holds and the mast steps. perhaps figuring out a way to sand a group of the strips to the same thickness, before you cut them to plank length.........might lessen sanding in such close quarters. that's going to be a task and a half!
she's looking good!

She is coming along nicely Mark.
Doesnt matter if anybody sees the "Easter Egg" in my opinion, you and the Admiral are the ones who matter.

The MM heavy duty mill is a totally different critter than the one I had. This new one is probably closer to yours in function.
The Admiral and I talked about it. This one is the "Easter Egg"... hidden. There will be another on the base and perhaps different wording. The hidden one is there just in case the outer is lost. Wishful thinking that someone might find my model interesting enough to look inside with an endoscope.
I can't speak for "all" French ships... but on the lower decks, there are two strakes to the outside of the main hatch and run full length of the deck. These are thicker than "normal" planks and let into the beams. On the gundeck, similar but with thicker planks between the two strakes. All being let into the beams such that the deck is smooth. There's also another row of strakes on the gundeck about midway between the hull and the centerline (on each side) that thicker and let into the beams.

Beautiful work Mark~! Thanks for posting.
BTW, I bought the Micro Mark heavy duty mill with several key tooling items and am very happy with it. It has a brushless motor that has some real muscle and the collets hold the cutters snug and true. The dividing head is very useful for making capstan barrels and the like. At the moment I am milling a set of oar locks for a peapod, which will be a gift to one of my granddaughters.

Ah but I do have one but the problem occured when ripping the planks off the stock and my thickness sander prefers the strips to be a bit longer. I'll sand the deck smooth.

Looks great Mark. Nice that the planks are a constant width, makes things easier

Thanks for all the "likes" and comments. After getting everything else around the house done and then getting the new mill set up, i'm busily planking the lower deck.
The first six strakes are finally in and I'm happy with them although there's some serious sanding in my future as they aren't all the same thickness... But I've sorted out the planking scheme that I need to lay down. This deck is all 1 foot wide and 4" thick planking. It's actually thicker then the gundeck which is 3" thick but mostly not as wide. I'll fight that battle when I get to the gundeck as there are some varying widths and thicknesses there.
For the lower deck, as near as I can find, the planks are all run pretty much the same width from fore to aft with hook scarfs at the bow and some tapering at the stern. I'm going full width but with the partitions fore and aft, I'm not planking much beyond them... One reason is that the Admirals Plaque is behind the aft partition in the gunroom.
Here's a pic.

Some of the subassemblies added to the deck. The forward castle is not glued in place. I placed it there to check the placement.

Thanks Ben!
Just a few minor tweaks and improvements. Nothing major, but it's stuff that needs to get done, to truly finish her off.
BTW - my new boat, Shadow, has just been started. You're most welcomed to join her journey via her Build Log.
Cheers

Looking very nice, Patrick!
I'll echo the comments that I can't wait to see what else you could possibly do to finish her, and, of course, can't wait to see what you're planning next!

Elijah reacted to Hennie in HMS Agamemnon 1781 by Hennie - FINISHED - Caldercraft - Scale 1:64
First off all, thanks all for all the likes and all the kind words :)
And a small update:
I just finished the fore mast, just didnt glue it. That I will do when all the masts are finished.
Now -with the first mast in its place, I can imagen how tall she really is....HUUUUGE!
And I am quit satisfied how it looks. And dont think it went all smoothly at the first time. For instance, the fore topgallant mast broke 3x while using the lathe, and each time when I almost finished it. So I lost several hours of work but thats all part off the deal. I had to go to the store to buy new raw wood.
Some pictures:

Nice going Hennie and a great looking blow sprit. What kind of lathe do you have?

@Elijah: thank you
@Sjors: thanks and... yes, you told me...
Using the lathe goes more easy than I thought in the first place.
Btw, I have a question about that:
- on page 10: the Hounds and Trestletrees for the top and topgallant masts: they say you can use peaces of 1x3mm walnut and tapering the lower part till they have the diameter of the mast. But its not needed when you have a lathe, is it??
I am still working on the foremast. Far more work than I thought. I will make some pictures when I finish the first mast.

It's hard to base your comments on the pictures from someone else, Elijah, try to be as specific as you can, for like Jan I cannot see the problem ....... THOUGH, don't let this be a reason not to comment in future!!!

Hi elijah,
I dont understand the part you mean.
Earlier posts show the deck as one part, including the waterways.
What exactly is missing?

It may just be the fit of the stick on deck, as it does not align perfectly at the bow and stern. The handrails have not yet been added in this photo and may conceal this? I must admit I have not noticed.

Alex - a really fascinating build that I have been following silently for a while. I look forward to future posts.
In terms of tubing this link may be of interest...... http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/Assorted_Selections.html
I'm not sure they ship to your part of the world but they do seem to send to most countries. Their assorted metal tubes come in handy for making a lot of fittings.
