My thoughts were to stay close to the box art as it looked way more fun that the two replicas I had looked at.

Nope. In fact, we strongly discourage third party hosting. You can upload your photos here, insert them into your post, and resize them as necessary.

    Cheers!

If I wanted to post images of my progress for ideas and feedback, do I have to find a 3rd party host and post the link or does this forum have that functionality built in? Thank.

    Hi Bosco,

The page on how to post a log is here:
The reason for Old Collingwood's question is probably that the section on kit logs is divided into time periods - starting with "up to and including 1500 AD' and working up from there to present time. Choose the one that's appropriate to your own build.

And welcome to MSW. I'd second OC's curiosity - what model are you building?

I decided today, that I am going to buy the Micro Mark Sanding tool since there is going to be a lot of repetitive sanding of the top and bottom gunport sills.  After sanding and placing 3 of the sills in place, I find I need a tool to ensure my sanding accuracy.  I have a disk/belt sander that is on a floor stand, and it works fine for big pieces and those needing a lot of sanding.  I just need something more of the scale needed to sand different parts of the Syren kit.  Want to avoid eating too much wood from the part I am sanding.  😄

I will continue with other items until it arrives.  ....below is a picture of the lower deck finished with tung oil.

The elevating thread bars were originally part of the casting, but they proved too fragile so I got rid of them and added the hole to which a length of brass rod will fit into, to simulate the threaded bar.
If I had kept the threaded bars, I would have had around 75% scrap rate.

OK, Duchess of Kingston will be available for pre order very soon, as it is almost ready.

In the meantime, I had a set of cast black resin cannon barrels arrive, including a PE sheet for each. I am selling the 9, 12, 18, 24 and 32 pounder cannon barrel and carriage sets in pairs, which include the laser cut pear, photo etched parts (including flintlocks) and 2 cast black resin barrels.

    https://vanguardmodels.co.uk/product/cannon-carriages/

I also had sample castings for the carronade barrels, which look fine, so will order production sets to be made. Again, I have the PE sheets done for these, just need the barrels cast now.

I have been working on my 7th kit, Sphynx, but because I am no back in full time employment, things are going slower than I would like. Still, get something done every day when I have the spare time. The short 9 pounder barrels (7 foot, as opposed to 8 or 9 foot versions) have been cast by MK, and the figurehead and stern decoration is being carved (digitally) right now, so everything's still moving forward...

Thank you very much. We are waiting for approval, but I think it will be a very long time,
During this waiting period, we started to work on Granado and fly

    Coming soon
Le coreur is done and we're starting a new project
Our mortar ship La salamandre is temporarily unavailable for sale due to copyright issues, so we are ready to start a new mortar ship.
I started to design this kit in 2013, but his ribs were too complex, so he was stranded later,After years of experience, we feel that we can continue now。

This is the final state of design in 2013

I heartily second Jaager’s August 7th post above.  Why build a model highlighting exposed framing if it doesn’t represent actual practice for the ship involved?  An exception would be the overlapping frame convention for Admiralty style models of Eighteenth Century ships, a model of a model.

In fact there was a huge huge variation in framing practices depending on where the ship was built and who built it.  For example when the 1840’s vintage Charles W. Morganwas replanked several years ago at Mystic Seaport they were surprised to find many frame segments that were not fastened to their neighbors.  They had apparently been added as planking went forward.  Not all framing was fully lofted and assembled beforehand.

BTW there are two Syren kit longboat models, the original 1:48 scale version and the later 1:24 scale Medford Longboat kit.  While both kits are technically plank on frame, the 1:48 scale kit does not reflect actual framing practice for these boats.  The 1:24 kit does feature the closer spaced frames and overlapping floors and futtocks of the actual boat.

Can’t believe one has recommended the best plank on frame company....Our very own Syren ship mode company has 2 of the best plank on frame models currently available.  Both the Queen Anne Barge and the Longboat kits fit the bill

So a chance to get back to her. Stanchion holes drilled, Deck sprayed with a clear coats and some primer where required. Next is the undercoats of chipping fluids then time for the camouflage pattern and weathering that accordingly

Thank you Bob for your kind words and thank you to all the 'Likes'.
The repetitive work on the ratlines is done...
I first printed parallel lines (spacing 7mm) on a white sheet using Excel software.
I then glued this sheet onto card stock and cut two shapes based on the plan, one for port side and one for starboard.

The two pieces were then glued back to back by inserting a thin wooden stick in order to stiffen the whole.

I can thus use the same jig for both sides.

Then it's just a matter of patience ... One clove hitch after another ... Then finally the job is done

All the lines concerning the mast and the bowsprit are now in place.

I can switch to rigging the yards

I am just finishing up a new batch of these kits as I write this.  You did a fantastic job with it.  This model kit is a as close to the contemporary versions you will ever see.  And those pictures really show how well you executed.  Well done....and straight out of the box.  You didnt have to bash or replace any items. That is a testament to your skills.
