Ryland Craze reacted to cdrusn89 in HMS Winchelsea by cdrusn89 - FINISHED - 1/48th
The "easy" stuff first - the cap rail at the waist.
I did not have to do anything special to get the 5/16" strip to cover the rail so my fairing job (at least at the waist) must have been sufficient.
Keeping busy with adding the inboard bulwarks while also building the belfry.
Will fit the drifts and rounded rails as time and paint drying permits.
Masking tape is to keep small pieces and sawdust out of the completed areas. Even my mini vacuum has a hard time getting into all the corners. Trying not to make cleaning up any harder than necessary.

Hahn’s book “The Colonial Schooner” has a complete discussion about how he built his model of the Hannah.

Nice fix. I had a similar problem planking alert, but I caught it a bit earlier before it had become so pronounced and was able to just adjust the thickness of the planks to compensate.

OK, I have just finished what I need to regarding building up the new Speedy hull.
These pics will show what has changed. The old Speedy required planking all the way to the top of the bulwarks, also the inner bulwarks.
The new version is completely pre cut from the main wale up, with spirketting added for the inner bulwarks, plus engraved planking and treenail detail for all surfaces. All channels, inner bulwark belaying racks and cleats now slot and glue into place, in pre cut slots, saving the need for pinning and gluing.
Please bear in mind that the model shown has no real finishing, no varnish etc. It was used just to add new pictures to the revised manual.
I will now spend the rest of the week updating the manual, ready to send to printers, and next week, start cutting the new sheets, so I hope to have this re released in around 2 weeks.

This kit's framing is pretty rudimentary, and I'm skeptical that its stern framing would correspond very well with Mr. Hahn's plans.

I was lucky enough to finally travel to Europe with the family in tow this year. I was able to stop by the wonderful National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. It Is well worth a visit! I will also add that Amsterdam is a very very English language friendly place, so don't let language stop you from a visit. I dumped a bunch of snapshots here:

Joshua Mark was kind enough to record my presentation on sharpening chisels (from this year's Joint Clubs get-together) and post it on Youtube:

POST Forty-five
As planking continues, I become aware of an undesirable feature developing.
The word is snying.
In this context it relates to the excessive upward curve of a plank where the centre is higher than the extremities.
1258
This is a common problem in the bow area and I note on my hull there are slight indications of it developing eight strakes down from the wale.
Probably due to deficiencies in my lining off/and or incorrect tapering, it occurs where the planks are edge bent as they round the bow, and strake upon strake, the effect is magnified.
1260
My solution is to remove a section of the last fixed bow plank, and spile in a new section to reduce the extremity of the curve for the next plank to lie against.
1261
Fortunately, the section came away cleanly without too much effort.
1262
The spiled insert is not easy to spot and is a better option than carrying on regardless with the result of visible excessive snying.
1263
With ten strakes now completed each side I am now below the waterline, and the planking runs looks better to my eye.
1268
1277
I’m about a third of the way down the hull, I will now add a further strake above the Garboard, re-check the strake arrangement, and carry on.........

Ryland Craze reacted to rhephner in Model Master Paints
I guess I naively thought that O-5 gray would be the same color no matter what brand. It should be based on the same historic paint color right? Not even close.

Ryland Craze reacted to dvm27 in HMS Winchelsea by Beckmann 1/48
Beautiful work Matthias! It must have anguished you to have to cut the upper scrollwork and stem to fit the figurehead but it is invisible now. Is that just a quirk of your models or did others need to do the same?

Ryland Craze reacted to Beckmann in HMS Winchelsea by Beckmann 1/48
Thank you,
I continued with the gratings between the rails.
The triangular gratings in the corners of the bow-area, I made separately with a template. I glued the parts on the template, assembled everything, cleaned it, painted it again an glued it to the model.
Then the facilities and false rails were added,
and finally the figure-head.
I have been waiting long for this point.
What a lovely figure. I actually like it, that it is not a warrior or something like that, but a musician. Remembering, that securing the peace should alway be the goal for every army or navy.

It's time for decor. Almost every element was redrawn and redone several times. It looks good on the computer, but when I cut it out of wood, I didn’t like it at all.

Yes, 20 years ago I made the first model. Since then, I spend all my free time only on ships.

Decorated under the balcony. It was not on the drawings, but I saw it on other models, and therefore decided to do it.

Ryland Craze reacted to Dave B in HMS Speedy by Dave B - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - 1:64
Thanks for the likes as always!
Well it's been almost a month since my last update and I have made progress on attaching all these little blocks and lines. Many trial and error episodes to get things to look reasonably close to my references (other Speedy logs) and instructions. Quad Hands that were recommended have been extremely useful.
I see I probably should make a few adjustments yet but overall I'm happy with the results!

Ryland Craze reacted to woodartist in Using Micro Stump cutters to cut out small pattern wood pieces
I am a novice ship builder!!! But a very experienced wood carver for 35 years. When I started carving all we used were full size traditional chisels, then palm tools became popular, essentially micro chisels, that could be used with one hand. Then came power tools with a cable and handpiece with carving bits, then brushless handpieces came without a cable and both large and micro bits. I do not have a scroll saw so I started using my micro stump cutters to cut out small pattern wood pieces. These stump cutters are high carbon steel cutters on a 3/32" shaft. The cutters can get as thin as 1/64" and as large as 3/32". If you get 1/8 shaft bits they can get as large 1/4". They are US and German manufactured and cost about $1.15 each from US and $2.25 from Germany. They last a long time if you do not overheat them. My handpiece can run up to 50k rpms without any vibration and is essentially noiseless. It has adequate torque at low speed as well. On 1/32" wood I can run at 3k rpm; on 1/16" at 6k rpm, at 1/8" I can at 12k rpm and at 1/4" at 30k rpm. There are micro sanders at 120 and 180 grit. They are cone shaped and as a they ware out they get smaller but still sand. The bits will work in a Dremel but not very elegantly. If you do not have a scroll you should try it. Pictures of the tools and my home shop below.

But my planking went well. Best one so far, hope that carrys on to my next ship the Pegasus lol. I can't wait for that one to finally start. . So ,next week it will be the whalers, then on to the deck furniture, mast, sails and done lol.,but lets not get ahead of our self lol. Here is my Nina as she sits now.
