    Primer
So far I have used three full sheets of the laser-cut ply, built the hull, and sanded it until it looked like a piece of furniture. Time for primer.

Thank you Richard. I will continue to add notes and photos of what I know about the operations around Kufra and the associated convoys

It's all about context.  Without it, it's just a model.   With it... it comes to life and tells a story.  Those stories are often forgotten sadly.

Nice work and an interesting subject.  I too am enjoying your pictures.  This is a region that I suspect few of us have ever seen.

Alan, without the history, what's the point? Although we can sometimes bury ourselves into research, and forget the model, understanding what is being represented is key to representing the model...

Keep it going brother... Yep there are a lot more WWII references to the SDF than prewar... especially imagery...

    Looking great to me....

    Alan,

If the historical interludes are boring please let me know and I will desist. I find this area hugely interesting and can get a bit out of hand.

Personally, I find the historical pictures and background stories very interesting indeed. But I can't speak for everyone.

Slow progress while I have been thinking out the background to the model.
I airbrushed the sand colour onto the assemblies and loose parts. I am beginning to realise that last year I had started out with limited / poor advice for using the airbrush and the maxim that you should use a fixed dilution for a given paint is not correct. I am starting to work with more dilute mixes and thin coats to allow shadowing from the primer to come through. Thank you to the masters here that have given me the insight. I really like how this is coming out as I attempt it.

I am horrible at hand painting the tyres on a rim so this time I tried masking the rims with blue tack and air brushed the tyres with German Gray. Tyres would be dusty and sun damaged and not a glossy black. I will wash the treads to bring them up a little

They came out better than I could manage by hand.
The lights have been painted with Mig Bright metal and will be filled with window maker.

The main assemblies have been fitted together ready for a gloss coat and washes and detail. The fit looks good. It looked okay at teh time but now the Scarff ring looks out of scale. I will see if a wire version will work

    Thank you for looking in
    Alan

The hedge trimmer did seem a bit out of place.

As a child, I had my own workbench with real tools, a defensive measure by my father to keep me away from his stuff.  The only power tool was a bench mounted vibrating jig saw.  You could actually touch the blade. Without getting cut.  It worked for balsa and other soft woods.

    Roger:
That was my first power modeling tool.  Got it as a Christmas present when I was in 5th grade IIRC.  I had it sitting around for years after moving on to better tools and it finally was gone - maybe at my parent's hands - I just don't remember.  But I used it a lot back then.

Third page down: the Dremel Moto Shop.  I had one of those and I pity anyone else who had one.  My parents bought mine for me at serious expense to them.  The disappointment that saw created in the three of us is felt by me to this day.  It ran at one speed - too fast.  Enough noise to startle anyone not ready for it - think "lawn mower over gravel".   Hand numbing vibration that made following a line impossible.  It used pinned blades that came in a variety of sizes, all too large.  The flex-shaft accessory in use in the photo was useless.  The motor speed, while too fast for scroll saw use, was too slow for a flex shaft tool.  The "flex-shaft" was one in name only.  Trying to flex it would create enough friction within the shaft to drop the motor speed and then pressure on the cutting tool would bring the motor to a near stall.

I don't think they presented this as a workshop for making models. By "model shop" they mean it's an example of a woodworking shop on which to model your own. Interesting that they included a Shopsmith.

Model "what"? 1/2 scale stuff? 😄 Looks like a full blown wood shop, something we had in high school back in the day.

From January/February 1960 WORKSHOP magazine: an article on what they consider the ideal workshop for modelmaking.
No 3D printers or internet radios but most of the items still look appropriate.  (Don't miss the jokes scattered through the pages)

Hi Dan and welcome to Model Ship World.  The Lowell Dory is an excellent kit to start your journey in building wooden ship models.  The other kits in the series will help you build your skills.

The Dory looks great and you are off to a good start on the pram.

Regarding posting issues....for some reason the last image you posted is the "HEIC" format (High efficiency image container), while the first four are all jpeg.   HEIC is an Apple image format that is not supported by the forum software, so the image does not show up in your post.  So whatever you did to take and post the first four images, keep doing that.  There are ways to convert the images, and there is a setting on the iPhone to tell it to use a more compatible format, if there is not some reason you want HEIC for other purposes.   Google "HEIC file" to learn more than you ever wanted to know about it.

This will be my second model. I built the Lowell Grand Banks Dory First. I have not built any models in many years and wanted to start with something simple. The instructions for the Dory were great. i hope it goes as well for the Pram.

Every thing was present on an inventory of the Kit.  It was a bit difficult sanding the bevels on the different edges (faces? or some other term I don't know)  of the bow transom. The pictures in the manual show the transom being sanded with a big fat sanding stick. That did not work so well as each edge is pretty small. I made some thin ones-- and that worked much better. The scribed  lines are thin and the edges are pretty small. I found it much easier to see what I was doing with some head mounted magnifiers that were left over from soldering surface mount electronic components in the past. These things are  are my new best friends!

Building the board for the molds was straight forward. The tabs on them need a bit of sanding to be fully seated int the slots.

I tried to use steam to bend the keel plank but it did not seem to work.  I am not sure how long you hold the plank  over the steam to get it to bend. The manual says its possible to use a thermostatically controlled soldering iron. I have one of those but was not sure how hot it should be and I was afraid to use it. I finally  used the same technique that worked well on the Dory and just soaked it in hot water for 5 minutes and used rubber bands to gently bend the plank  to the molds.  I am going to let it dry out and rest overnight.

Apologies for my photography, and any mistakes uploading the images, This is my first time trying this and I'm not sure I am doing it correctly

Don't listen to Chris – he's not even in the state anymore! 😀  By the way, you're just down the road from me, almost literally. I'm probably less than 10 miles from you, up in Pleasant Hill.

Thanks for all of the welcome messages! I understand that there is still a lot of California north of the Bay area,. I've been up to visit a few times and its really beautiful.  Still,  having grown up in Southern California, it's definitely different up here. I do cheer for  the Giants and also the San Jose Sharks.

Welcome aboard, Dan! As a long-time former resident of Humboldt County, I feel compelled to correct your notion of 'Northern California' -- Lafayette is definitely in what we called Southern California. Northern California ended at the Mendocino-Sonoma county line. Just kidding, of course! Well, half-way, maybe. We can accept you as an honorary NorCal resident as long as you root for the Giants and not that other California Team That Shall Not Be Named (and to head off any potential wisecracks out there, the Angels and Padres are not considered worthy enough adversaries to qualify as Teams That Shall Not Be Named). Good luck with your pram, and hopefully you'll share some pictures of it!
