  1. Yep, they launched further out than the original plan, thanks to the 2 gunboats they spotted. Militarily, it wasn't much of a raid, but it did make the warlords rethink their plans for the home islands perimeter. Fascinating reading of how their thought processes worked. Ought to read "Shattered Sword" to get additional insights into their plans with their fast carrier forces, pilot training and battle damage assessments. Very different from our perspectives.
  2. Edward, all too true. Too many interests, too little time. And no, I never did get into his Starbuck novels. Hmm, better get cracking on your defenders, OC. Your two Frenchmen are looking good.
  3. I'm pretty sure the lower turret was removed for the Raiders, since their ingress/egress was expected to be at low altitude.
  4. Prop looks nice, Ray. I'll tag along, too.
  5. Both sides of the American Civil War used swords, although the Rebs were less well armed with it. Tough to run the blockade with the varied weapons needed. The South had good cav units early, since so many of them could ride. One problem they had was if their mount was lost, they went home to get resupplied. This hurt unit effectiveness, due to the absent men. The Yankees resisted forming cav units in the "volunteer" units, since it could cost a lot more to furnish all the equipment needed. It wasn't until June of 1863 that the Yankees fought the Rebs to a standstill at Brandy Station. They continued to improve through the rest of the war and developed some fine leadership. The Rebs held their own until the last year of the war after losing many good leaders such as JEB Stuart. As you might surmise, I've been an ACW buff for years and have studied the cav ops in the war.
  6. He's sporting some sabre there, OC. Is Mr Curry considered heavy cavalry? I've read the terminology, but have no equivalents to compare to them. I watched "The Charge of the Light Brigade" with Errol Flynn a few weeks back, and they were wearing a myriad of uniforms. Dazzling stuff.
  7. How did Anzio Annie fit in with these large bore guns?
  8. Edward, it had been raining, so I'd imagine they were all a mess.
  9. Very nice printing of your replacement parts. Interesting that the barrels are printed, too. They don't seem to have the fine ridging, either. Superb stuff.
  10. EG, take a step or two back. Work on something else. I think we all have a dark corner of the shop where our faux pas reside. Some issues just beat us. Unfortunately, it's your Blue Jay 4 build today. You'll puzzle it out and dazzle us all with a newer, better Zipper. Nihil illigitimis, carborundum. Don't let the bas***ds wear you down. We'll all be there supporting you.
  11. Busy corner of the tarmac, OC. Nicely done, mate!. 👍👍
  12. "If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't, paint it." Some may recognize that adage.
  13. Work off good color photos, if available. For very old ships, who's to say who is correct on colors. Can't show anyone a good color photo of the Santa Maria, can you? Kits may include painting instructions, but sometimes they're incorrect. Do some Internet searches for color ideas.
  14. The finish looks great, EG. Bet that puts your mind at ease. I hope you do your practice on your tank turret. Don't screw up the Zipper. Got some gloves to prevent prints and oils from transferring? Can't wait to see the markings applied to this jewel. 👍
  15. Been brush painting the cleats yellow. They're molded in a yellow/tan resin, so I'm seeing how good my Mission Models yellow paint (an acrylic) covers, without priming. I'll add them and attach some wire loops on the corners to hang the rubber tire bumpers. Then weather the scow.
  16. Denis, those parts were just announced. No telling when you'd see them if ordered. But he does do some nice work in many scales. He really supports the hobby of shipbuilding.
  17. Gorgeous job on the wire wheels, Grant. Nicely done.
  18. Denis, saw this just now on Steel Navy. 1/28 scale Spandau MG for your Dr 1. Here's the link for Model Monkey goodies:https://www.model-monkey.com/1-28-aircraft
  19. May need some strong vision augmentation, such as an Optivisor or similar. I use mine over my glasses, too. Takes a little practice trying to apply paint or glue, since your depth of view is off a bit with the device. Have fun and don't try to paint more than a handful at a time. Had to do that when I worked on a club project building N Scale (1:160) buildings with double hung windows. Nearly went cross-eyed doing those 4 wood and 2 clear plastic part windows .
  20. Nice grognard in the bearskin chapeau. I take it he's the Elite Guardsman?
  21. Salute smartly and carry on, Popeye. Your Fokker is looking good. Nice to be able to break up all the black. I painted an SR-71 for a kid once and wanted to do up the exhausts as burnt metal. He wanted all black. Oh, well.
  22. Excellent work as usual, Greg. Nice, walking the deck with some shade and a breeze. County Class for my request, Greg
  23. Nice job on the track section. Looks good. One item to add additional realism would be to dribble a faint black line of grease and oil approximately in the middle of the track. Yes, that area in winter can be brutally cold. I lived in Bitburg, Germany, for 3 years. Up in the Eifel.
