ccoyle reacted to rcmdrvr in King of the Mississippi by rcmdrvr - FINISHED - Artensania Latina
Completed. After three month of work I declared the project completed. I know that this has not been a detailed log of construction steps but I am pround that I brought this log to its completion. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to send me email.
To any one thinking of building this kit. The die cut parts fit. The wood is in good shape (but they have it measured down to the last inch so be careful with your cuts). When done it makes a really neat conversation piece.

ccoyle reacted to Sailcat in Cutty Sark by Sailcat - FINISHED - Revell - 1/96 - PLASTIC - Rescue kit bash morphed to Dame Tisane
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement once again
The display case is planned but I haven't really looked into it yet, soon though. And that's because this is my last post for this Build Log ... yes, it's finally 'done' in the sense that the work on the ship itself is as complete as planned. There's still the case as mentioned, plus little tweaks for the final appearance adjustments. But for now I'll just get on with the last photos.
Fore Royal braces in place.
Fore Topgallant braces.
Fore Upper Tops'l braces.
Fore Lower Tops'l braces loose fit before tying off.
Fore Lower Tops'l braces tied off and Course braces loose fit.
Fore Course braces tied off.
The last of the decorative rope coils in place and the finish line is crossed.
The Dame Tisane.
And the rest I'll save for the Completed Model Ship thread. Many thanks to everyone who looked in and provided much needed advice and information. Special thanks to Jim, Dan, Popeye, Dafi and likely others who've slipped my mind, for helping me out repeatedly when I was struggling with stuff. It's because of you folk that I was able to get to this point
And as to what may come next - I've been feeling the itch to do other things hobby wise but I also can't stop thinking about the next nautical adventure. Perhaps the New Bedford whale boat, I really like that kit ...

ccoyle got a reaction from Oboship in HM Gun Brig Adder 1797 by DB789 - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - 1:64
Wow! Hot off the presses and already well into the build! Based on your previous efforts, I have no doubt you will make a fine model out of this. Enjoy!

ccoyle reacted to chadwijm6 in Scrappee Liaison by chadwijm6 - Microaces - RADIO
As part of my ever growing interest in modelling I'm going to build a radio controlled micro plane from Microaces, the Scrappee Liaison. Jon at Microaces has been extremely helpful, as this is my first radio controlled anything, so he gave me advice on all the bits I'll need including a transmitter & receiver.
It's arrived very quickly and the boxing is impressive. Looking forward to this.

ccoyle reacted to DB789 in HM Gun Brig Adder 1797 by DB789 - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - 1:64
Thanks Andrew, enjoying following your Trial build. So impressed that Chris changed the name for your gun brig base to “Sparkler” - now that’s customer service!
Theo - thanks too
The last day on Adder has posed some interesting challenges of my own making.
I decided to fit the plywood false deck before the aftermost bulkhead part 153 to help ensure that the bulkhead was at the right angle. So far, so good.
I’ve fitted 8 of these plywood decks to VM models so I know the drill, but on Adder I snapped it down the centre line. I could not fit the two parts so that they were aligned leading me to think that the structure below must be out of alignment.
I contacted Chris suggesting that I’d better start again and buy the MDF sheets and plywood deck again from him. Instead, he told me that once the deck is split it’s hard to get the halves aligned, but there’s a neat trick to achieve this: taping the two halves together before they are fitted and then adding them, letting the glue dry and removing the tape.
This I did and it worked very well.
I clamped a flat piece of scrap wood on top to ensure the central join stayed flat and painted diluted PVA over all the joints below.
I also added most of the MDF pieces that form the bow structure.
Then it was time to fit the rear bulkhead 153, but as can be seen below there’s a small overhang of the false deck over the end of the keel and the longitudinal formers parts 31.
Checking vs the plans, this results in the bulkhead being at the wrong angle and the false deck needs to be sanded back in line with the keel and parts 31. The gap between the bulkhead and the keel shouldn’t be there in the photo below (unglued).
If you’re following the sequence in the instructions, this will need to be sanded back before the deck is fitted as the bulkhead will already be in place. I checked all this with Chris and he told me that he usually makes these type of parts over long to cover all eventualities, better to have too much than too little.
Now in the right position and back on track below.
Chris thanks so much for your help.
Whilst the glue was drying I started work on the cannons and carronades. The 3-D printed resin barrels are very high quality, but on the carronades the cavity for the barrel is shallow and if you look closely you can see the flat bottom ~1mm inside the lip of the barrel. I saw on someone’s build log that they had drilled these a little deeper, so decided to do so too. The barrels are surprisingly strong and easy to drill. In the photos below the right hand barrel has been drilled to ~2.5x as deep. It’s grey because of the resin and the inside of the barrel will need to be painted black again.

ccoyle reacted to DocRob in AEG G.IV - Creature of the Night by DocRob - FINISHED - Wingnut Wings - 1/32
Progress is a bit slow at the moment, but I managed to prepare the wings for decaling and painted struts and other wing connected parts.
It´s a Wingnut kit and I spoke about tolerances before and that´s why used liquid mask and numbered tape strips for identification of the struts, to seal the connection points and wooden or plastic rods for the strut´s holes in the wing, glued in with heavily water thinned white glue.
I then applied some white pastel onto the seams of the wings, with a flat piece. This was the fastest and easiest way to pre shade the spars. I didn´t want to put much effort into this step, because I guess, it may remained unseen with the opacity of the lozenge decals on top.
Then the wings were coated with Mr Color GX-100 gloss varnish. I always have mixed results with that stuff. If everything works fine, it produces an absolutely fantastic gloss layer mixed with leveling thinner, but when not....
I learned the hard way, not to pre mix GX-100 in a plastic jar, as it produces very ugly ´frosted´ spray, maybe because color and/or thinner reacts with the plastic jar.
In this case, I mixed everything in a glass jar, but still, I had the frosting effect three times while spraying. After cleaning the airbrush, I used the same mix without issues, very strange.
Cheers Rob

ccoyle reacted to Scott Crouse in Wood to Plastic to Wood
A reintroduction of myself, joined your group 4 years ago when I suddenly had the desire to build wooden ship models. Watched the builds on here and youtube scared the <poop> out of me and went to the plastic world. Armour, planes and eventually to what I wanted to do all along, ships. Built the Snowberry, Huron and about to start the Fiume. But that wood itch remained. Building with PE helped build the confidence that I can do those small details. A few months back a friend handed me a kit he was given as a gift and said "I will never build this" and I tossed it on the shelf. Took a look the other day day and found it is the Lady Nelson, a beautiful and expensive kit. Checked out a video on building her and quickly came to the realization that "no, I am not ready to jump straight in on that". Lurking here and elsewhere, I have decided to start with the basics and the Shipways Dory arrives tomorrow. Plan to do their 3 ships in the combo to see how I like building with wood and to build the basic skills that will be different than the plastic world.
If folks are interested in watching, when I am in the model room I stream building on Twitch. I will be starting the Dory after 1 April (part of a group build - others are doing plastic) but in the meantime I am building other projects. So if any new folks want to see me build my first wood ship or if experienced folks want to watch and bring their experience or if you like to just watch plastic builds or hang out while building yourselves, drop by whenever I am online - https://www.twitch.tv/bartbandy
Although a lurker these past 4 years, your builds and discussions have been in inspiration. I hope to at one point get to the level to be a more active participant. Cheers!
