ccoyle got a reaction from allanyed in HMS Royal William 1719 by niels wilhelm - 1/70 scale - 104 cannons scratch built from Euromodel plans
Niels, a couple of issues:
1. It's not necessary to create a separate post for each photo. You may add multiple photos to a single post.
2. Your photos are not displaying. We don't recommend using third-party image hosting sites. We regularly have problems with such sites when they go out of business or members don't renew their subscriptions. We strongly advise members to upload their photos to the site first and then add them to their posts.

ccoyle reacted to DocRob in Renault RE20 Turbo by DocRob - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/12
...and now to something completely different. While choosing my actual summer build, I opened a lot of stashed boxes lately and got stuck with the large colorful ones. I have three of the old Tamiya 1/12 car kits and the Renault was picked over the Porsche 935 and the Brabham BT44, because I liked it less than the others. Large scale car modeling is new to me, so if I disappoint myself, the damage is easier to cope with.
I wanted to have this kit, even if I disliked these turbo testosteroned mini engines, as the Renault looks like a gentle Frankenstein in formula one standards. The yellow and white paintjob does enough of a job, to conceal that a bit.
The kit dates back to 1981 and this is clearly visible, while inspecting the parts. There is flash, parting lines, burr and crude looking parts. This kit for sure is not up to standards of modern Tamiya kits and needs some extra attention.
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look like a bad kit, but I guess, there will be some unwanted surprises hidden on the sprues. The ancient kit received PE for grills and brake disks and decals printed by Cartograph.
First, I cleaned the main body parts and this was not done in a blast. It took some hours with the blade, chisel and sanding sticks to get rid off the multiple burrs all around. I want to paint the body parts early, that in case of failure, the expense in time and effort wouldn't be too great.
The rear wing base construction is a four part U-shaped affair, which I guess should be flush all over. To reach that goal, there will be needed a lot of filler, as you can see on the picture. Another decision to make soon, is about the chromed parts for the wings and rims. The provided chrome doesn't look too bad, but I will compare it with photos of the real thing and decide then, if I strip and repaint these parts.
Cheers Rob

ccoyle got a reaction from Edwardkenway in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
Ugh. One down, thirteen to go. 😑
If you ever see me complaining about card radial engines, this is why!

Okay, mystery solved -- and boy do I feel a little sheepish about the whole episode! It turns out there is no missing disk. Instead, part 34d wraps three times around the top of the cylinder formed by 34c. Derp!!

I'm fairly certain that any hanging of models anywhere in my house or garage will negatively impact my marital bliss. 😮

Rudder and elevators dry-fitted. I will permanently attach these at a later date so they don't get knocked off during construction.

ccoyle got a reaction from Edwardkenway in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
Here's the patched-up seam. I first filled it without about three passes of canopy glue, then applied a thin wash of appropriate edge color, followed by a shot of matte clear spray to take the shine off the filler. It doesn't look too bad -- certainly not the Polish Touch, but better than the untreated gap looked. Naturally, bright lighting and closeup photography makes it look worse than it does at normal viewing distances and lighting.
And here's the rest of the spine.

All done! 8 months! Phew! This was the most first 1:196 wood kit and was the most PE I've dealt with. Just to remind everyone... this is a model of a Sumner Class DD FRAM II on which I spent the first 5-1/2 year of my naval career.

ccoyle got a reaction from Jörgen in Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat by ccoyle - FINISHED - WAK - 1/33 - CARD
Ahoy!
Well, it is time to start a new build log. For those of you who might be saying, "Hey, don't you already have, like, three other unfinished builds in progress?", I will simply observe that what you say is true, but I'm starting a new log anyway, so there! Anyways, I haven't been doing much modeling lately because I have a six-month-old, very active puppy, and for that same reason I may not make speedy progress on this model, either, but we'll see.
The Subject
The subject of this log is Leroy Grumman's famous F4F-4 Wildcat. I won't go into too much detail about this airplane, because if you are reading this then you are probably sufficiently airplane nerdy to already have a good grasp of the Wildcat's place in history. It will suffice here to say that the Wildcat was America's front-line, carrier-borne fighter for the first year-and-a-half of the country's war against Japan. Although the Wildcat is frequently compared unfavorably with the Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero', I think it is fair to say that the Wildcat, when flown to its strengths by a skilled aviator, could hold its own in a scrap with the Japanese fighter. You can read more about the Wildcat here.
The Kit
The kit is a brand new offering from the Polish firm of WAK. In fact, at the time of this writing the kit is still listed as 'NEW' on the company's website. This will actually be the first time I have ever worked on a hot-off-the-press kit, so you should all feel fortunate to be among the first to see one of these being built -- perhaps not likely to be among the first to see one finished, but close enough. The kit is designed by Jerzy Janukowicz, with artwork by Marcin Dworzecki, who is famous in the card modeling world for his work done for Kartonowy Arsenal (Halinski). Let's have a look, shall we?
The kit depicts the personal mount of the famous Lt. Cdr. John S. "Jimmy" Thach, the man who perfected the "Thach weave," a combat tactic that allowed a Wildcat pilot and his wingman to get a drop on the more maneuverable Zero. As you can see in the photo, I also have the laser-cut frames for the kit. Now, I took a bit of a gamble by not buying a canopy for this kit, since I already had one on hand, albeit for the ancient Halinski F4F-3 kit. I'm not aware of any changes made by Grumman to the canopy for the dash-4, so I'm cautiously optimistic that the dash-3 canopy will fit.
Lots of lovely diagrams.
And beautiful graphics. Don't be alarmed by the printed wheels -- there's an option to build the kit wheels-up, which I will probably not elect to build.
The back cover has pictures of the prototype model.
A nice touch in this kit is the inclusion of instructions in English.
To wrap up this introduction, I thought you all might like to see a little comparison of this kit with the older Halinski F4F-3 kit published in 1998.
A side-by-side view of the graphics (I don't believe Marcin did the art for this Halinski kit) reveals the nearly complete lack of weathering on the older kit (at left). The difference in detail is even more stark for the cockpit interiors (not shown) -- the older kit has almost no three-dimensional details at all.
Well, that's it for the introduction -- hope to get started soon!

ccoyle reacted to threebs in USS New York by threebs - FINISHED - 74-gun ship of the line
The 74 gun New York was never finished. She remained on the stocks until her destruction in April 1861 along with 10 other ships at Gosport (now Norfolk) Harbor. Research seems to indicate that she was being razzeed in preparation for conversion to a Steam Frigate. This build will reflect as she might have been had she been completed and launched.

That's very good work. Very clean and tidy. I plan the same - mast stubs only should I ever wish to rig but that'll be a distant day...For now (well, when I get to where you are) I'll also be happy with just a hull.
