toms10 got a reaction from Jack H in HMS Leopard by toms10 - FINISHED - 1:85 scale POF/POB
Little more progress the past few days. Fore royal and top gallant sails are rigged except the braces.
Also got the fore top sail bent to the yard and put in 170 reef points but who’s counting? 😜😁
hopefully this will be mounted in a couple of days. Then I plan to work on the main stay sails then the main royal and top gallant and top sails. I am going to furl the fore and main courses so I am thinking those can be made and installed afterward. At least that is the plan now.

The light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter! Finished the main mast sails and rigging along with the braces for the fore mast yards. Mizzen is next in line. Then have to make 127 rope loops for the belaying pins.

Have not spent a lot of time actually working on the model the last couple of weeks. Did manage to rig most of the fore topsail and get the fore course sail bent and furled to the yard. Took a couple of shots to get the furl looking somewhat correct but I think it is passable. My original thought and attempt was to “drape” the sail about a third of the way down but I could not get it to look like it was loosely draped. It just looked too stiff.
Now I can mount the fore course yard and continue on to the main mast yards.... after I finish laying the 100 feet of pavers for my front side walk, cut the grass, plant the shrubs and the beat goes on. 😜
Just looking at the top sail pic, the color or the upper sails look white. They are actually unbleached titanium which is more a hemp color. Next time I will try for a more realistic picture with my phone.

Congratulations a very nice job John,
As you said, there is no room for the crew! You went through that relatively quickly. You skills must be approaching expert level!

Wow! Now that’s a boat load of gear. I cannot imagine how they managed to survive, much less bring in a Sperm Whale.
This Boat is Finished! This build was a lot fun, as well as challenging. I Loved the detail this kit offered and the flexibility to get as obsessed as I wanted to be. Great kit with excellent instruction.
All that’s left is mounting her in a display case and enjoy. 😎

More like race to conclusions. And probably most of don't have access to a local hobby shop. The town I grew up in hasn't had a brick-and-mortar hobby store for nearly forty years, so it's demise certainly wasn't linked to online sales. And even if there is a local shop, most of them have tiny selections of wooden ship kits and supplies and know next to nothing about the hobby.
And comparing the purchase of a Chinese knock-off to the purchase of a legitimate article from a legitimate retailer? That's an apple-to-oranges comparison.

I have bought here in the past and like them very much. I cannot understand why shipping something from the UK to Canada is often far cheaper than from the USA to Canada. I've experienced this with model parts, books, and kits (not all from CMB!).
I also liked The Model Dockyard but Nick recently retired...

I'm not sure how shipping on parts would work out, but I have bought a couple of kits from Cornwall, and the lower cost of the kit made up for slightly higher shipping charges. The kits were at least $100 less than what I would have paid for a US vendor for the same kit.

Bolt rope hand sewn to the sail.
I finally found a color mix I was satisfied with. Needed a bit of yellow ochre to give it a dirty Manila Rope look. 👌 Thin enough to soak into the rope but not bleed on to the sail.
Soaked the sail down a third time with fabric stiffener. Trying to drape the sail so it looks set but flapping (luffing) in to the wind. 😆
Shrouds spliced and seized at the top of the mast. Thanks Mike, got that peg in the right direction. 👍
Eyelets also seized on the ends.
Lanyards seized to the shrouds.
Thimbles installed and ready to set the shrouds.
Mast, Sprit and Sail are all set. Need to paint some more rope. 🧐
Next up, harpoons, lances and all Manner of whaling equipment. Getting close to being ready to go fishing and catch me a whopper. 🤣
Cheers 🍻

Pretty much finished the bow sprit area. Still need to put on the braces for the yard but I think I am going to wait until I get some of the fore mast sails in so I don’t have to work around the brace lines.
It has not been a a very productive week in terms of forward progress. I ended up not liking how the jib sail came out so I took it down and made another one which came out much better in terms of texture. The first one had lots of small wrinkles that when you looked at it he sail by itself didn’t seem too bad. But when it was hanging next to the other sails I did not like it.
Also had to redirect some of my lines to adjacent belaying points several times as more lines were added to keel them looking organized. Put some on take some off.
I am hoping the bow area rigging is the most involved and the rest goes easier. I spent quite a bit of time reviewing how it all worked so it made some sense when building.
Time to start at the top with the fore royal and work my way down. I decided to leave off the fore staysail...at least for now. It was going to be set flying so I guess it could be left off. We will see after the furled fore course sail is up. Don’t want to “over sail” it either.

My flying jib is now flying!
Progress is slow but steady right now. I still need to trim up the excess rope on the belaying pins and put some 50/50 glue on the knots but I think I will wait until all the bow sprit sails are in place just in case I want to reroute something. That has only happened countless times already. That is part of why it is taking so long.

Houston we have propulsion! Actually it probably should be London we have propulsion! I was able to mount my first sail today. It took all afternoon, mostly staring at it figuring out all the intricacies of rigging. This is going to take a while 🤔😮. My goal is to bring the completed model to Modelcon in Philadelphia in August. Should not be a problem but I have learned that I am not the speediest modeler and I can only put a couple hours a day if I am lucky. I would be very hungry if I did this professionally. 😜😁
here is my sprit sail.
Now I have to try furling a sail as that is my plan for the top sprit sail.

So I have been playing with sailmaking lately. Finished putting on the bolt ropes and cringles for the sails I plan on hanging (about 18 or so). The lower ones will be furled. Still need to figure that out.
In the mean time... let the reef pointing begin! I am rough guessing at about 500 plus. This kind of make ratlines down right exciting 😜😁. Here is the spritsail getting started.
And when those are done it will be roband time! That is probably another 500 ropes! Then I can start attaching sails to yards and then attach the yards to the masts. At least that is the plan.
Please note that all plans are subject to change without notice... and usually do!😁

Nice job John,
Sloth mode! That is the only mode I know when it comes to modeling. If I count all the “do overs” I probably rigged my model 3 times already and I am only 25% done 🤣.
