    Hi everyone.

Just a quick update - I'm still working on Shadow's Lower Deck's accommodation.  Still at an early stage, though.

Have a great Friday and impending weekend!

    Cheers

Looking at the wax masters reminds me that there are so many different ways to accomplish the same result. Some requiring complex machinery and even more complex computer programs and knowing how to use them, others requiring thinking outside the box and seeing a wood or plastic bead in the craft bin that is the right size next to the tiny pins in a packet of 500 and the plastic or brass sheet to cut the blades from.
And then the old fashioned methods of shaping round stock on a lathe and silver soldering shaped brass blades into milled slots.

So much to learn so little time to absorb it all. Again beautiful work Alex.

Would the netting from sacks of fruit suffice? For example either those bags of tangerines or garlic sacks? Then just wrap with string around a metal ring. The part I am not sure about would be how long the bag is? Guessing 18-24 inches in length? And at least a foot in diameter.

Very cool work, Toni. You are doing great. I actually am toying with the idea of having a binnacle similar to yours on my model of Mary.

I have finished the boat, I only spend the last coat of paint.
Probably, in its final form, I will have to remove the benches and rudder because inside will be held the spear, that still I have to build (and already I shudder because this was a very demanding job!).

Work continues, slowly. As the end of the build draws near I decided to get the case out of the way. I originally planned on making the case out of Plexy Glass but decided glass was a better fit. It took a fair amount of trial and error to get to a point where I was comfortable. The process of wrapping the glass with copper tape, burnishing and applying the solder was tedious. Im happy with the end result and feel it adds a more classical feel to the model.

    Hi everyone

Once again, many thanks for all of your comments and Likes!

I've added some more detail to the two decks of Shadow's engine room.  I'm hoping that with the addition of some cupboards, pipes, etc, that it'd look reasonably passable, even though the scale is so tiny.  Bucket loads more to go, though.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Have a great weekend!

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

Thanks for all of your Likes and comments.  I really enjoy them, particularly as they put a warm smile on my face  .

Anyhow, as the fit-out of Shadow's interior progresses, I've started on her Engine Room, which consists of two decks.  Shadow's small size, as well as the fact that the plans are sadly lacking in detail, has meant that I've had to be realistic about what level of detail I could fit into such a tiny area.  So, please don't be too critical....Oh well, as long as it looks mildly convincing, I'd be happy.

Whilst there's heaps more work to go, here are the photos so far.

    All the best, everyone!

    Cheers

I have added the air and communication lines using beading strips of two different sizes. They are linked together every 3 inches with a piece of heat shrink tube that was shrunk with heat from the soldering iron barrel.
I made the adjustment valve in the air line starting with hex bar and turning two parts that were soldered together and then added the knob on a locating pin. Lines were attached to the helmet and junction on fore deck. I talking with Chuck he stated that the main amount of work by the lineman was done on the fore deck when the diver was in the water. He said the boat was not anchored and that the diver at times would pull the boat to a new location.

I also added the window glass to both the boat and the helmet, so look for reflections in the pictures. I used 1 mm acrylic sheet and cut each to fit. I laid the the clear acrylic over the plans and made each score with a Xacto blade and broke on the cut lines. Then the edges and corners were sanded to fit. For the helmet I used a circle guide to scribe a circle and then cut and sanded to fit each window.

Here is a series of pictures, I am finished with the boat at this point unless I discover an additional detail that would further enhance the presentation. So far the only ones that comes to mind are a retrieval rope that attaches to the diver that is hanging on the cleat right now and a gathering net for the abalone.

Now back to writing and the Constitution and wait to find out the next step for the Dirty Dozen with the Museum folks. My wife suggested that if the diver is displayed sitting on the engine compartment near the ladder there is no need to build an engine.

This has been a fun build and I have learned a great deal about abalone fishing, boat building and added a new skill of working with Sculpty.

I may be wrong, but I think each of those three domes serves a different purpose. So while they may be close, and I have seen numerous pictures of large motor yachts that have the domes in close proximity, I am not sure how much they would interfere. The biggest of the domes would probably be a navigation radar of one kind of or another, the two smaller domes would likely be for the Satellite TV and phone connections. Just my two cents worth.
