Angarfather reacted to yamsterman in WASHINGTON GALLEY by yamsterman - 1/48 scale - POF
HI ALL
TIME FOR AN UPDATE TO PROVE I HAVNT BEEN TOO LAZY OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD.
FRAMES ARE CONTINUING TO BE BUILT........STERN TO DEAD FLAT ARE NOW READY TO BE INSTALLED........DEAD FLAT TO FORWARD HALF FRAME ARE YET TO BE BUILT.
FIRST OF ALL THOUGH A CONFESSION HAS TO BE MADE
I HAD BEEN CUTTING RECESSES FOR SWEEP PORTS AND GUNPORTS AS I BUILT THE FRAMES. THE SWEEP PORTS PROVED TO BE QUITE STRAIGHTFORWARD.......HOWEVER THE SECOND GUNPORT FROM THE STERN ENDED UP AS A TRAPEZOID......HMMMN.......NOT CORRECT METHINKS!
SO THE RELAVANT PAIR OF FRAMES HAD TO COME OUT.....ISO TO THE RESCUE!!!!.......AND BE REMADE.
I SHALL NOW BE FOLLOWING GREGS EARLIER SUGGESTION AND CUT THE APPERTURES FOR SILLS AND LINTELS AFTER THE FRAMES ARE IN SITU.
WE LIVE AND LEARN AND I AM ALWAYS WILLING TO BOW TO WISER AND MORE EXPERIENCED HEADS!!!!!
PHOTOS OF CURRENT PROGRESS INCLUDED......THE LAST ONE SHOWS THE FRAMES JUST PLACED ON THE KEEL FOR EFFECT NOTHINGS BEEN GLUED YET.
CHEERS.......MICK

And here's the roughly completed head and crown carving....used a piece of hard rock maple.
Left pic is ready for removal and clean up....
Right pic - Note, I have glued in a piece of black card stock to reinforce the very thin points while I cleaned them up.
Then with the head attached to the body....
Still see a few touching up places. Also need to build up the nose slightly....then ready to create a couple of molds.....
Note, I'll glue another piece card stock to the back side of the whole carving before pouring the mold to help with removal without breaking off any of the delicate parts.

Back to work....
This is an experiment in getting a closer shot of a couple of carvings before painting them with the metallic gold....
Top photo is the clip art I used for these two pieces.....
Note, I decided the head of the carving on the left will need to be done with a much harder median (plastic or hard wood) because the vinyl will not allow for the fine detail of the facial features.
As usual, I'll be making silicone rubber molds of both carvings in order to cast duplicate pieces to go on the port side.

Began the new year with major cleaning of the shipyard (after seven years of sawdust accumulation on shelves and in corners etc.)
This turned into a yard sale this past Saturday.... getting rid of boxes and boxes of heavy commercial grade woodworking tools packed away in cargo boxes since I sold my custom furniture business several years ago. Then re-arranged the shop, installed some additional lighting, and painted the floor.... still must caulk the expansion joint and paint over it sometime today.
The difference is astounding, to the point that my poker crew walked into the shop last night and thought they had come to the wrong place.

Angarfather reacted to Piet in Surabaya by Piet - 1/80 - Mid 17th-Century VOC ship
This is the post I planned to issue yesterday, or was it day before yesterday, but had to postpone it till now.
In the meantime The "kruishouten" and "hoorn klampen" were finished and cemented to their various locations. A literal translation is "cross woods" and "horn clamps".
There is of course a change coming with the kruishouten but that 'll be for another day.
This shows the kruishouten cemented to the bulwark, port side, waist. Hmmm, kinda small - - -
This shows the kruishouten as well as one of the hoorn klamped to the mainmast.
Here we see one of the two hoorn klampen with their karvijnagels cemented to the foremast. The karvijnagels acts as belaying pins but are permanently attached to the klampen.
Looking at the pictures with the kruishouten cemented to the bulwarks they seem too small. I decided to make them a little larger and see how they look. I kinda like the size - - unless Jan thinks they are no good and need a different shape and be a little heavier. I copied the idea from the Prins Willem book. No problem with that, I can easily rip them out and redo them. I'm so used to redoing that it's becoming routine
Cheers,

Many thanks for all your kind words
Frist I had some problems to make the bricks. I tryed to model they from wood, but that looks like firewood for the fireplace. At last I remembered a forgotten box with restovers from railway modelling long time ago. And in it I found three varietys of brickwall paper. Exactly what I was looking for.
And this is the coloured fireplace. I did use Oxid of Chromium (green) Raw Sienna and Van Dyk Brown. As a friend of mine ( his is an restorer himself) says are this colours which are used for such decorations in the baroque.
Cheers Hartmut

Jack next time I am in the city i will check out what the Michaels has. there is also a hobby shop close as well.
Deon I will give the canopy glue a look.
Thanks for all the likes
While waiting for the other boat to dry I had one of those moments where I fitted the skylight to the low raised cabin roof. I kept looking at the junction between the two halves of the original cabin, and picked up a chisel and a razor saw.....
The went out to the shop to the big bandsaw...
before
after
I will need to rework the hatch area but I like the overall design better, it feel a little more elegant and less boxy.
