Thanks Keith, yes, as part of this community it is easy to get addicted to the perfect fit or the exact representation...
Just a short update. Another couple of boards are filed and dry-fitted. Glue will have to wait a fair bit still.
When it is time for glue the inboard plank will be fastened first. Then I can do the final fine trim of the outboard plank against it.

"I worked all nitght, then it dawned on me" ... well not that it matter now, but I think I planked the hull with aspen instead of birch.
And how did you come to that conclusion. Well, I scrapped a veneered cupboard and used the bulk wood for planking. But when I thought of it now, it seemed pointless to use birch as bulk when the veneer was birch... so some searching the www gave me the plausible wood aspen instead. Similarly light coloured and the grain is not obvious. However, aspen is lighter and softer than birch. So, a quick comparison on the scale of similarly sized pieces gave that what I thought was birch (ie the aspen) was a fair bit lighter than actual birch.
But as I said, not that it matter now.
Will however be 100% consistent in using birch for the deck. Hence, the covering boards (or margin planks) are my 2nd attempt...

Thanks also for all the likes, fellows!

KeithAug reacted to Lecrenb in St Roch by Lecrenb - 1:48 scale - RCMP Schooner rigged as schooner c. 1930/35
Happy New Year, and it is -30 here this morning... a good day to hunker down and start making rudders...
This is the original plan, drawn in 1":1'. I checked actual dimensions on the plan to verify it is accurately scaled, and it is, therefore it was a simple job to divide by 4 to convert to my 1:48 scale dimensions...
The blanks for the two rudders are three basswood sheet laminations, which in turn are laminated using 3M double sided tape. Then I sanded one edge flat as my reference and drew the rudder onto the face of the wood.

Off to the bandsaw, then a first sanding to ensure both rudders are the same shape before separating the two blanks and rough sanding the profiles...

Next is a test fit on the ship... everything seems to line up! The second rudder is a spare that was carried on deck...

I finished the various bits of decoration.

I put on a second coat of metal paint and left it for a couple of days before overpainting with Vallejo gold paint. The under-paint turned out to be still a bit soft when I applied the gold which fortuitously produced a textured finish which I felt was better than a smooth finish.

The decoration was quite flimsy and this allowed it to be easily contoured to the hull. I held the decoration against the hull with an elastic band and a plank and then dripped CA glue into space around the decoration to permanently attach it.

Not only did the filigree turn out perfectly, but I'm also in awe of your ability to place both sides so symmetrically. Also, that photo of mother and daughter is a keeper!

The gingerbread turned out very nicely Keith, and the paint finish works well. Lovely picture of the dolls house - many happy hours of play ahead!

'Proper' carving or not, I think it turned out 'the' thing 👍🏻

The rush to get the dolls' house finished in time reminded me of a story my paternal grandmother used to tell of my grandfather trying to get some buildings for my father's train set finished (back in the later 1920s) and the oil-paint wouldn't dry in time for Christmas ...

"God bless you merry gentlemen" and ladies.

I am sorry I haven't been around for a few weeks. Dolls house building and Christmas shopping have decimated my time in the shipyard. The good news is that the dolls house (and shop) is finished sufficient to be delivered to Bean (Eve) by Santa. Bean and Ben are being entertained by their alternate grandparents this year but Santa is delivering the dolls house to her home address in time for our New Year visit. I hope Bean won't be too worried about Santa's delivery mistake.

My son has been at pains to remind me the dolls house is to be "played with". His way of telling me that finesse isn't required. I hope that I have met his criteria. I leave you all to judge.

Thank you all for following along with my build over the last twelve months, as I look back I see that progress has been somewhat slow. Fortunately I have made a bit of progress since my last post so I will post an update later this week. With a bit more time on my hands I hope to catch up with all your build logs before the turn of the year.

In the mean time I wish you all a Merry Christmas.
