Just a very small update.  I am currently working on the webpage design - what is currently there is really just a place holder until I can get the whole thing working.  I also believe I have located a good database to move the information into, which should enable search functionality using keywords, date, title, author etc.  While I am working on this, I will have an occasional post about interesting resources that can be found on the internet -

    Many thanks!

The tick strip method is probably better explained by reading the PDF that is in the NRG resources for planking a hull.  Go here - http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-framing-and-planking-articles.php

I'm fairly sure that you want the 'lining off the hull' article by Chuck Passaro.

I adjusted the bands by eye for what I thought was a pleasing 'flow', with no consideration given at all to any of the things you are worried about.  I made drop planks or stealers whenever I got to the point where I realized that I needed them, and I alternated sides of the hull (by band, not by individual strake) and just made them as close to the same as possible on either side.

I know some people think that drop planks or stealers are a crime suitable to be hanged for, but they were used in the real world ships when needed, so if I'm not following a real planking plan that exists for a ship (i.e. like the Cheerful), then I'm just going to wing it.  I think drop planks and stealers add a very nice 'look' to a natural finish hull (as long as they aren't overdone).

J T Lombard reacted to Daniel Dusek in Mamoli model kits are back
    Hello all,
As many of you know company C.Mamoli (producer of Mamoli model kits) completely burn down two years back.
I would like to inform you that this week after long time negotiations me and owners of C.Mamoli sign the contract for transfer license of all Mamoli model kits into my ownership.
As there are no parts which survived from the fire I have to start production from beginning and for this reason I cannot start production of all kits at the same time.
I plan to start production of MiniMamoli kits first which could be available in the Autumn and then I would like to add step by step also the kits from MV series. I also plan to redesign some MV kits into contemporary standards.
    Best regards

Greetings all.  I have been gathering links to a wide variety of resources (old and new) available on the internet for use in model building.  These range from scanned treatises from the 16th century (the oldest I currently have is from 1578) to available academic research (including theses and dissertations). Topics range from ship specific (such as the US Frigate Constellation) to highly generic (such as period treatises on rigging).  I am contemplating posting these links to a website that I can update periodically, rather than continuing to update my posts here on MSW.

Where i could use your help is, first, in getting a feel for whether you would use such a site, and second in deciding the best way to organize the website - I will not be uploading the actual documents, but rather a brief description with a link to the URL to access the document.  Would it be more useful to be organized by subject (such as Dutch Shipbuilding; Masts and Rigging; Naval Architecture; Early American Frigate documents) or in some other manner?  How would you want to be able to find the desired information on such a site?

CAVEAT - I know NOTHING about web design, and am going to be learning as I go, so keep any advice on the structure and so on for a neophyte with little or no knowledge!

    Many thanks!

Haven't put mind together yet, also I won't be using the board itself because it's not long enough but the rest of the stuff I will put to use for the build board I have for the upcoming build will make sure I keep the base that came with it though for later. Will post when I have it setup for the build.

    Hi Mark.
Yes you are correct the any masts is way to long for the lathe.
I own a lathe but prefer to shape it by hand. Planning first . Then sanding in a pillar drill. (Modified with hole in baseplate and through bench.)
I find that a long thin mast flexes in a lathe even the stock centrepoint being used and with very sharp tooling.
The wood plane is a 14 inch so has little or no level problems. First square the masts. To the right tapper Then octagon 8 sides. Then Hexadecagon 16 sides. This leaves very little sanding.
That's my method. I know it's a lot of work but results are great.

    Regards Antony.

    Hi J,
That is a little metal roller press that is used to bend planks and soft metal without the use of heat. In most cases you don't even need to soak the wood. Just adjust the rollers for the thickness you want and run the material through by cranking the handle. It does a very nice job of evenly bending. If the wood is particularly thick or hard, a little soaking first helps. For hull planks, you don't need soaking at all. I used it with the Royal William for all of the planks and even the heavy wales. I got it from Micro-Mark.

I have paused my work on the carronades for the moment. Another MSW member is sending me a lathe Dremel attachment. I am very humbled a blessed over the kindness & generosity people here at MSW have shown me. Since being disabled from my chronic lyme disease our income has dropped dramatically so finances make it difficult or impossible to buy kits, tools, etc. to give me something to work on. I have been gifted 3 kits, an assortment of wood, had tons of support & encouragement & now this is coming. I feel so blessed to have found this group of people! As I thought about all this it brought a tear to my eye. Ship modeling is wonderful therapy for me & helps keep my motor skills from deteriorating as fast. It means so much to me. Thank you so much everybody!

So I've been working on the shrouds for the lower level masts. Serving those lines was a real patience-practice, and after serving they were stiff and a bit of a pain to work with.
For the "full size" deadeyes for the fore and main mast shrouds, I made a couple simple jigs from a piece of scrap wood and four fine metal wire pieces to hold the two deadeyes the correct distance apart while I determined the length of the end without a deadeye attached. This worked pretty well. For the mizzen and its smaller deadeyes, I just eyeballed it with acceptable results.
I think next, as per John's advice on his website, I'll make and mount the various bits of cutting in tackle, before I continue with the standing rigging.
As always, my eyes always go immediately to what I could have done better!
Here's what it looks like now:
