EJ_L got a reaction from Hubac's Historian in Soleil Royal by BLACK VIKING - De Agostini - scale 1.70
Hi Martyn!
Good to see another S.R. build on here as I am building her myself at the moment. Looks like you are off to a great start on her planking. She is a beast of a hull to plank so i can understand wanting to break up the monotony of planking. Those boats turned out nice. I like how you decorated them. While I can't speak to historical accuracy, they add an interesting element that makes them stand out. That is something rarely seen on the ships boats as I think that many of us gloss over as a necessary part of the build but not one that gets a lot of attention. Nice to see something different!
I got my seat pulled up and ready to follow along!

Thanks for the likes and comments
Hi Antony the kit is very well made and the carvings are brilliant and well cast .
As promised a few pictures of what I have been up to. The first planking is going on and to break it up I have built the ships boats. The largest launch I have included some carvings on the stern , not quite sure if they had them but I like them .
More to come so thanks for looking

Oh dear,
I just ordered some stuff from a Swedish company, hope it doesn't get lost in the mail? :-/
The Vasa does not have a waterline as such, only loading marks, so I wouldn't worry.. ;-)

Sjors,
Don't know how I missed the start of this build but I've found some room in the back and a little popcorn leftover so I'm ready to join in! Looks like you are off to a fine start on what should be a fun build.

Glad to see someone else using them. They can serve a lot of different purposes. With planking and decking I find them very helpful.

Hello Jörgen, yes it's Postnord. And after reading complaints on their Facebook page all hope is gone that one will ever get service from them... You are right about waiting for the parts. But I can't wait... I have been thinking that I should just go full on and follow the instructions to 100%, see what happens and then get the complete kit when/if Artesania Latina issues it. By the way, also in the shipment the Postnord misplaced are these and these AND THESE So you can understand I'm really really mad
Thanks Peter, I'll try and keep all in mind.
Thank you Zoran, and thank you for visiting. If you are referring to the drawn line on the hull that is just a marking of the curve the final planking should have. I used it to get the angle of the gunports. Although the gunports where very low. She was never meant to sail the high seas, so they did not think this was too big a problem (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a vague memory that I read this somewhere.) Where DeAgostini will put the waterline I have no idea. If all turns out well they might even put it in the right place but I wouldn't bet money on it...

Hi Puckotred... nice Wasa is building on here, nice work indeed ...
Was the water line raised a bit later on, when the ship was built, so it passes over the lowest wale (rubbing strake) ?... by this, the gunports were put too low ?...
Regards, Zoran

Nice job Pucko. Is it the Postnord that is failing again? When I looking on your build I get more and more convinced that it is better to wait for the parts and build it in your own way and just skipp Deagostinis weird approach.

If it helps, here are some views where you can see the run of the gun ports in the bow.

Note especially how forward facing the chaser ports are.
As noted by Michael, you may need to more the upper gundeck port slightly upward.
I suggest to keep an eye on your distance between the upper edge of the upper deck gunports and the height of the weatherdeck..
The hull shape is looking great. Looking forward to second planking..
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Michael,
as you also, I have the same lathe from Proxxon. But I ordered also the bottom part as spare part from Proxxon. I screwed both on a long, narrow wooden plate. So I have now the possibility to work on very long rods and this makes work much easier, it works pritty good. In the picture you can see the extension on the right side.

Henry - Thanks for posting this. Vocabulary is still new for me - really enjoying the learning process as well, Also thanks for your very timely info, i was incorrectly going to pull all of these fairleads. Yikes - thanks again
Denis - After reading Henry's post I will follow his lead and loop ropes around the lower part of the pulleys and tie them off to pins here and there.
PS: I have notice one and two "n"s in the spelling of your name at from various members.
Joachim - Thanks so much - glad that you are back indeed. Your Amerigo Vespucci is an incredibly beautiful build - almost impossible to find enough superlatives to describe your work.

Ooops... thanks for the warning Michael. Think I'll wait cutting that gunport.
Another problem with not having plans or the whole kit... you can't test fit anything.

Nice update
PS: Be careful with your spacing here. This caused me a lot of grief.

Ah! That is the trick! I have been fighting that same issue with mine and that "bow" in the rope was one of the biggest annoyances with trying to keep them tight. As much as I hate to do it, I may redo my crows feet to see if that improves the overall look. May rebuild those blocks while I am at it. Don't have to do them all but three of them for certain are bothering me. Thanks for figuring that out!

gads...i don't know what to say....but am grateful for your kind words.....so interesting that you brought up fear of failure and i've never thought of that...... but you've just made me realize that yes, i've always had an idea in my head of how something should eventually ideally look, or be.....and just went ahead and figured out how to get to that place through trial and error.....
i think my main thing is perseverance....ha...i was supposed to be a pianist when a child, but had too many handicaps....but i spent my whole life trying....and finally at 76 i managed to play some pieces on the piano as i thought they should sound, and put them on a little cd, as a testimony i guess......then, i was able to let it all go, as it didn't matter any more :).....
but the ship building is different....it's just like someone who likes to play golf or go for walks in the woods etc .......the challenge of figuring things out is fun....maybe like a crossword puzzle....with me it's all romance and capturing the grace and beauty of these sailing ships balanced with the deep respect for the hardships and sufferings and brilliance of the men who sailed in them....
i'm trying to make the sails with a strong, but light material which would flutter and billow in the wind, rather a practical stiffer material....i want to see the ship dance........a graceful ballet on the waves....that's why i build an r/c model...and large is better for realism......
