Just wanted to remind you at the calculation that I already made earlier about the average stay time there and at my prove, that this was a mere leisure event :-)

    #5589 I cite myself:

    Some small thoughts ...

... with 800 men crew and 6 seats we get this optimized calculation:    800 men (NCO) / 6 seats gives 133 men/seat    In a optimized 24 hours use using all seats we get the following numbers:    24 hours = 1440 minutes    1440 minutes / 133 men = 10,5 minutes/man per day. This means no second wasted and the next user always stand by.    If you take account of that not the whole day it is possible to have this steady usage because of time, scedules and weather, the usage time per person sinks dramatically. If I remember well, constipation was widely spread, which leads to longer men mean residence time.    So the conclusion is, that the heads, regarding the weather, daytime and service schedule, could possibly be a quite crowded place at certain moments.    This account only includes the "big business". There still would be some persons too to be expected at the heads for the "small business", if they are not preferring hanging out in the shrouds (leewards): One hand for the ship and one hand for yourself - now that line is finally understood.    A quick research in German Law and regulations indicates the following:    Puplic Law of the State of lower Saxony says for a leisure event of 800 visitors the calculation should be:  800:100 x 0,8 = 7 seated toilets and 800:100 x 1,2 = 10 urinals (always rounded)    The Law of Working Spaces "Arbeitsstätten-Richtlinie, ArbStätt 5.037.1, vom 26. Juni 1976 (ArbSch. 9/1976 S. 322)"  for 250 employes one needs 10 seated toilets and 10 urinals, that means more than double for 800 employees.    In a converse argument that leads to the conclusion:  For a working place the ship should have 5 times more seated toilets and this leads to - that by the number of seats - the ship must be a leisure event - Join the Navy - see the better world!    Sehr geehrter Gruß, Ihr treuergebener Diener most sincerely, your humble servant,   dafi

Thanks again for the likes and comments, everyone. And yes, Ed, I too am mortal!

The sequence of construction needs to be carefully considered. Before adding the keelson (making replacement on the plug impossible) a last half-strake needed to be cut and fitted. This will carry all the ornamental scrollwork aft. It has a sinuous S-curve in plan, and required the entire elastic band brigade to damp-shape it into position.

Looking good Phill. I agree with Nigel re the portholes - do a test with some scrap before deciding.

Here are the photos I promised of the single hull filled and sanded to date.  I don't believe the shape is to bad.  You will note, if you expand the photos, that I have marked ,in pencil, the tiny imperfections in the sanded filler.  Once I have filled and sanded the other hull and joined them together I will finish the planking around the stern and bow of the ship and finally fill and sand back the imperfections.  Another few hours of choking on white dust...  Then it is on to the portholes, rubbing strakes etc. A slow but enjoyable task.

One question re the portholes. Should I cut a hole into the hull or just glue them on to it.  I will have to see how they look I imagine.

It seems forever since I last updated the log.  Things have been pretty hectic around here plus both Pam and I have had a few health issues which have slowed things down considerably.  Thankfully I'm now able to get back into the workshop.

All the spars have now been made but, as can be seen in the photos below, not yet detailed.  The jaws of the mizzen boom and gaff have now been finished off, so the next job on the spars will be to get some bands made, which means I'm really going to have to haul out the soldering gear soon or I'll run out of things to do on the model for lack of metal fittings.  I still have the dunny to make plus the windlass is only half done, so maybe I can put off the soldering just a little longer.

PS:  I actually enjoy soldering once I get started, but it seems to take me a heck of a long time just to get the equipment organised.

The sheer strake proved challenging in more ways than I had anticipated. First, this strake tapers to a point at the bow. Finessing this was not easy. Secondly, I had a minor mishap. While working with the hull off the plug, my sleeve caught the unsupported aft end of the strake and it snapped off. So, a re-do. I flattened and re-assembled the broken plank to show its peculiar shape. Wes mentioned a U.S. quarter, so I've included one for scale.

I will not remove the shell from the plug again until both sides of the aft ends are complete and united with the outer transom!

Sticking things to a painted surface is asking for trouble Phil. If you do need to attach something to a surface that is already painted, try to scrape/sand the paint off just at the attacment point, back to bare timber (on both pieces) as you really want a wood-to-wood/metal bond.

The gauges have now been set aside for the time being.  The final version will be dependent on some lighting I plan to add, so will wait for some of that to arrive before going any further with these.  In the meantime, it was time to start construction proper.

    Construction: Frames and Keel

The frames are all die cut balsa ply.  The die cutting requires a little more effort to release from the layout boards than does laser cutting, and the edges are nowhere near as neat.  However, after a couple of hours of cutting out and cleaning up, we were ready to begin.

Four of the frames have reinforcing strips around the edges, so the first job was to glue these up:

Frame Four is also drilled to accept the steering column, and has a support installed on front (bow) side of the frame:

The Forward keel extends from the bow to Frame Four, and is comprised of two identical parts epoxied together:

The sub-Deck provides a flat surface on which to assemble the frames.  It comes in two parts which are joined together over a sheet of grease proof paper on top of the building board. (The grease-proof paper is to ensure that the sub-deck doesn’t accidentally get glued to the building board!)
