I have finally started work on the masting. Boy, there sure are alot of spars compared to my last model. The foremast went together with lots of trial and error. Mostly error. But once I established a system, the other two masts went together rather easily. All the masting is currently dry fitted so that they can be worked on. There is a ton of fittings that will be glued on piece by piece and careful planning is called for before the spars are stained and painted. I'm pretty excited about getting to this stage. Rigging is one of my favourite phases of the build. Once the spars are fitted, rapid progress can be made with the rigging. Here's a photo of the masts in place...

Fantastic! What a great subject for a model boat. I really like the fact that Billing come up with designs for models that are different than the more conventional and have more relevance to the European model builders. All the best with your project. I will be following along!

The couples are in place: I won the war with the strakes! It was a tough job: a rigorous shipwright's job...

Hi - added the rest of the cannons to the deck plus the chimney & gratings.

Before finishing off this area, I thought I would move to the bow deck area & work on the head rails.  First thing I had to do was chisel out the top of the wales so the gratings would sit on the supports properly.  after a lot of filing to the head rail slots in the supports, they were glued in place along with the upper cheek rail.

Then, the middle & lower head rails were shaped & glued in place - this took almost a whole day to get them even on both sides.  Finally, the gratings were added.  Got a bunch more to do yet in that area.

I'm happily back at work on Winnie. Duchess of Kingston will now go on pause until I complete Chapter five.

The first thing done was was to make, shape and fit out the rudder, using the laser cut parts. I drilled and filed  the rudder opening  and painted the edge black. I followed Chuck's suggestion to use only two pins to mount the rudder.Much easier than trying to fit five of them.

Next, I added the rudder trunk and benches, again using the laser cut parts. You can see from the photos that I added the extra triangular bench top supports to protect against warping.

Lastly, I made up and added the sill from strip cedar. All of the work was given a coat of Wipe-0n Poly.

Thank you for your input and thoughts. Building models according to plan or their historical accuracy is a dilemma that every builder must face. Fortunately, nowadays there are already enough quality plans.

I waxed the railing, covered the part where there would be other equipment..

There really isn't room for a Pin Rail on the aft deck on this plan..

The hull planking is done: it was not an easy fight to convince each strake to take a place...!
The next step is to set up the inner frame... and to convince them to join the strakes: it will be another difficult thing.
For this boat, it's really naval carpentry ! And I try to do the best I can. 😉

Hi Burma. Thanks for looking in and pointing out the top and cross-tree holes for the shrouds. I have partially drilled out the holes in the cross-trees but have yet to do the same for the tops. But worry not because they will be modified. Lots of work yet to be done before they are installed.
    Cheers,
    Peter

A couple of pics for now,

    Bulkheads are now all glued.
Decks are dry fitted only to check for alignment.
I suspect that this is the "easy" part and things will get interesting from here.

Nothing too exciting, finally started gluing.
Given this is the first time, for me, working with wood, its a little daunting to make the first step.
    Slow and steady....😉

update - finished up the poop deck by adding some bitts, a few timberheads, stern brackets, the skylight, & a bunch of eyebolts.  I used liquid window maker for the skylight windows.
Next, the bow railings & timberheads were installed.  The cap rails, railings, & timberheads were all laser cut to shape and fit nicely - basically just had to assemble, paint them & glue them on & cut 4 short sections out for the last 4 cannons.

    Thanks for looking in.

    Hi JR,

As a fellow Cutty Sark builder, I will definately follow along with great interest. Although our kits differ, the ship is the same and it will be of interest to me how AL have designed their kit. I am envious of their hull decoration, which I believe is much better than Billing.
From the pictures of your shop you appear to be very organized and I'm sure you will do the model justice. I also noticed that you have some liquid inspiration on your shelves. Don't forget to refer to the artwork on the bottles as well as the books to gain insight on the construction of the ship. 😉
All the best with your build!

After a long hiatus from Cutty Sark, I have finally started on the masting and rigging. This is just a short update as to where I'm at with the project.

The first step in this long and involved process is to fabricate the parts that hold the masts together, they being the tops and cross-trees. My old kit had these pieces marked out on sheets of ply which had to be cut out with a scroll saw and fret saw. I cut the pieces out with the scroll saw and then filed and sanded out the pieces to size.
Due to the fact that the tops are less than detailed as marked out on the plywood, I opted to use them as templates. The templates were then used to trace the shapes on thinner sheets so that I could sandwich the gratings in between. I decided to use styrene for the grating as they are a uniform thickness and width and there is no sanding involved for such small and delicate strips. All will be painted white so there won't be an issue with the different materials.
Here are some pics of the initial construction.

A new shipyard to change a little bit the stones...
This is the BillingBoats kit of a boat that you don't see much: a Nordlandsboat!
Direct descendant of the landskips of the peoples of Northern Europe.

The Nordlandsbaaden is a type of boat from Nordland, northern Norway, and dates from the 17th century. As a fishing boat, it had its most popular days from the 18th century until the appearance of motorized fishing boats. These boats were extremely efficient and seaworthy. They represent a culture and a form of expedition that originated in the Viking era. The boats are still built today, and they participate in races and regattas along the northern coasts.

I find these boats very elegant and racy. It is of course a clinker hull, I have not yet determined the colors I will put on it.
As it is a descendant of the knarr hulls, it will be a good start for the one I will make later...
And then, on a scale of 1:20, it allows you to do things !

    Dear colleagues and friends,

Thank you all very much for your comments, kind words and support. It means a lot to me and I am pleased that you like the Royal Katherine model in my rendition.
It was a really great challenge when I decided four years ago whether to go for it or not, but despite many difficulties during the building, I do not regret this decision. At the same time, I fulfilled another modeling dream, which I was able to share with you and almost to the end with my husband George. The realisation of this project brought me not only the joy of the hobby itself, but also learning and possibility of expanding the knowledge horizons about real ships, their construction and history.
My main intention was to strive for the most realistic model reconstruction of the real appearance of the Royal Katherine and to point out the various shortcomings and inaccuracies that we often encounter in documents and plans of sailboat models. In addition, I tried to create my model without the use of special tools and from the most available materials as an example of the fact that even a very modest background is not an obstacle to creating a nice and quality model, which makes this hobby available to almost everyone.

None of us can know what the future will bring, but I definitely do not want to give up my hobbies and when I find enthusiasm for a new and interesting project again, I will share it with you.

Kind regards and all the best,

    Doris

Update - poop deck on & planked.  The cap rails were added & the carronades were finally finished & set in place with all the rigging.  The carronades are shown in the retracted position thus the lack of slack in the breech ropes.  The railings will be added later - if not, I would surely knock them loose.     Need to add a few more things & then on to the pointy end of the ship.
