Cutty Sark by Flypast - Artesania Latina - 1/84

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Well, here goes. My first wooden ship build. As much an education as a journey to try to do this lovely vessel justice.

I am going to proceed fairly slow at the start, and hopefully, with the guidance from others here who have already done this, avoid at least any major errors.

My work roster is 8 days on, 6 days off, so at best updates will be every other week.

Nothing much to show just yet but given that some of these builds take years to finish, I figured it was worth putting some effort into a dedicated work table.

As yet I haven't decided how i will support the keel, I am considering a couple of options.

A few prelim pictures to get started.

Believe me, my young friend,

there is nothing – absolutely nothing -

half so much worth doing as

simply messing about with boats.

Good luck! Interesting shop you have there -- very tidy, and with an enviable stash of plastic kits in the background!

Thank you, it is my happy place. 😎👌

Thanks,

Interesting...what is inside the book Robert Kipping "Masting and Rigging"?

If possible, could You make a few pictures of content?

Thank You very much!

Regarding H.Underhill...I purchased his book here https://www.skipper.co.uk/catalogue/books/page

Hi JR,

As a fellow Cutty Sark builder, I will definately follow along with great interest. Although our kits differ, the ship is the same and it will be of interest to me how AL have designed their kit. I am envious of their hull decoration, which I believe is much better than Billing.

From the pictures of your shop you appear to be very organized and I'm sure you will do the model justice. I also noticed that you have some liquid inspiration on your shelves. Don't forget to refer to the artwork on the bottles as well as the books to gain insight on the construction of the ship. 😉

All the best with your build!

Kind words thank you Peter....the hull decorations are nice, i have only briefly looked them over and not sure what the original was made of (wood or metal)... i would like to, at some stage, try myhand at carving but only if it serves to improve. 👌

As for the liquid...purely for inspiration....i would much prefer a Sarsparilla 🤣

Nothing too exciting, finally started gluing.

Given this is the first time, for me, working with wood, its a little daunting to make the first step.

Slow and steady....😉

Nice start Chap!!

I have the same A/L kit in my cupboard.

I did attempt the older version, (Bare Bones), a few years ago.

I got as far as the Keel/Bulkheads/Decking.... My Abyssinian cats broke and scattered the components far and wide chasing a sizeable Bush Rat inside the house....

I did attempt to rescue but a little too far gone.

A long story short, decided on the Sergal/Mantua version.

I embellished this with many aftermarket parts.

One thing about this particular kit is the line of Portholes along the length of the ship, my feeling with this is not particularly good, there were only four portholes in the Bow, Port and Starboard. Anyway, I really shouldn't make my feelings of accuracy get in the way of your build.  (I think this might be a Chinese kit thing when A/L was bought up. I believe they are now back in Spanish hands.))

A single POB model, take your time. (If you want to know, my C/S took me six and a half years of weekends, probably a max. of five hours a day esp. during rigging work.

Have a think about steps in advance and always consider the "What If's."

Mistakes are part of the wooden ship model journey and the lateral thinking to correct is always fun!!

(I have made mistakes in every model ship kit that I have ever attempted, it's part of the journey.)

Nice that you have the research material to hand. One other thing, you could get a hold of the Cutty Sark plans from the Cutty Sark Preservation Society, they don't cost too much and are an invaluable resource. (I'll see if I can find the URL for you.)

Are you intending to Rig with sails?

As mentioned previously in this thread, you do have an enviable collection of kits🙂, I'm taking a small break in wooden ship models trying to construct a 1/400 Titanic for my lady. it's proving quite challenging, at least the PE is.

Anyway, enough of my chatter/opinions, there are many more on this site with much better "Sage" advice and experience.

I wish you well in your endeavors and will keep an eye on proceedings if you don't mind.

Cheers and Regards,

HOF. (Harry)

I am always looking for more reseach material.

At this stage I'm leaning to no sail, just rigging but that may change.

All comments / opinions and advise are welcome and appreciated 😎👌

A couple of pics for now,

Bulkheads are now all glued.

Decks are dry fitted only to check for alignment.

I suspect that this is the "easy" part and things will get interesting from here.

I have just seen this and now wondering how it has progressed? Also to compliment you on what a great setup you have! I should have done something like that for my lockdown projects here in Melbourne instead of Jigsaw puzzles. I did the 1:96 Revel plastic model of both Cutty Sark and Thermopalaye back in the late 1970s. Bought the Imai plank on frame 1:80 plank on frame, but never really started it. Plans to build it and encompass it into a bar. I have those books on rigging I saw mentioned in an earlier post. My step father had them from when he did a model of the Golden Hind. I have that book The Log of the Cutty Sark, with the dust cover.  Now thinking of clearing out the back shed of the home brew kits and Christmas decorations and making it into a modelling room...
