  1. I have both in my inventory. The polyester is superior in strength and in looks, It's a bit shiny but that is easily fixed with some diluted Matt polyurethane varnish. Cotton will fit in better with a restoration like this I think.
  2. @calt4 I'm still waiting for the samples you sent. I think my cotton rope will probably be the best choice. If not I have lot's of thread at my disposal. This will be quite a lot of work to restore. I'll be following your progress for sure!
  3. I found Another video about rope making. This time it's some old timer Spaniards in the countryside making cordage. It shows the processing starting with the hemp fibers to the final product. There are subtitles for this video, I don't know how accurate they are...
  4. Shipping costs are a problem. I've been using Oversize letter-mail in Canada with success for around $2-$3. A tracked parcel in Canada is over $20... For US and international Canada post has decent rates with untracked air-mail usually for under $10 -200g. If I get a very small order I have been able to sneak them in regular letter-mail without issue. I only sell rope so I don't use boxes or have to ship things weighing in pounds so that keeps it cheap and easy.
  5. https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-66309 Some photos of a Cruiser class ship. You can see the gallows' with the capstan between them.
  6. I'm at the same stage on my HMS Snake, It's pretty much the same kit with a few changes. For the deck you will want a light coat of Matt polyurethane. You don't want to darken it anymore than it is. Decks were regularly holystoned and would be a quite bright color. The copper plates will need some CA remover for the seepage spots. After that you may want to polish it all so they can all age evenly. Probably best to leave it honestly as it looks ok. What do the cannons look like? If they are cast white metal you might want to get some resin ones or turned brass.
  7. Green rope 🤣 My bet is that the line was dyed a tan color but then changed over time too green. Some of the ropes I dyed tan years ago turned almost pink, I would show pictures but I chucked them in the bin...
  8. Hello Everyone, Polyester dark brown cable-laid rope is now available. They range from 1.1mm (0.043") to 3.8mm (0.149") in Diameter. Cables in Black and light beige should become available next month. I'm just waiting on more thread to arrive.
  9. I've been wondering how I'm going to make sails for one of my builds. You just solved that for me, they look really good!
  10. Hello everyone, I've added light beige to my polyester collection. For those who like a hemp rope that has been sea sprayed and sun bleached. Sizes range from .25m (0.011") to 1.8mm (0.070"). Cable laid rope will look really good in this color. I'll try and get around to making them in the coming weeks.
  11. I managed to glue one side of the planks on. I gave up on using PVA very early realizing it was difficult and time-consuming even with CA glue at tough spots. Using just CA glue the job was easy and I finished most of the planking in one night. Now I need to carefully clean up the glue stains.
  12. That Red Alder looks really good. Even tone along the planks. I'd use it. The Tanganyika I had in my HMS snake kit was awful and I bought replacement Tanganyika and it was just as bad...
  13. I've added Black polyester rope to my website sizes ranging from .25mm - 1.8mm. The Black rope does have a fair amount of sheen to it, more than the Dark Brown. I might look into making another product line with Gutermann Mara thread. Mara is more matt but does have a little bit of fuzz. I'll start making the cables for both black and dark brown this week or next.
  14. https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/ has been a great source for me in the past. https://www.agesofsail.com/ as some have suggested, I've bought a few thing from them also. https://vanguardmodels.co.uk/ for some of the best kits on the market. https://artesanialatina.net/en/ has a large array of kits and materials. https://craftysailor.com/ this company has a limited yet great lineup of kits and materials. Most of these are MSW sponsors.
  15. I have found a video about the Halls Barton Ropery. The accounts from the people are kind of sad, They talk about injuries and that the buildings were not heated... people working in medieval working conditions up until 1989!
  16. Good to hear you got your agreement in order. Of all the AL kits the Hermione Lafayette is the kit I want.
  17. Honestly the kit market should have all types of models to fulfill what everyone likes. I personally like the kits with pre spilled planks. Anyone who really wants a challenge can try there hand at scratch building.
  18. Polyester Anchor Cable is now available. I made them ranging from 1.1mm (0.043") to 3.8mm (0.149") in Diameter. The 3.8 cable is big enough for a 74 gun ship of the line in 1:48 scale. I've also added a letter mail option at checkout for small orders. Now people that only need a few ropes don't need to pay ridiculous shipping costs.
  19. Free shipping this weekend on all orders. If anyone wants to get some samples of my polyester rope now is the best time. Thank you @Katsumoto for that review! The carvings on your Xebec are really good. I've also added more sizes 1.4mm - 1.8mm. I'm going to start on cable laid rope this week since my thread arrived early.
  20. There I shrunk it for ya 49kb. Copy it to your computer and save it. Why are the limits so low? Admins can we get some more space like 200kb-500kb?
  21. Synthetic rope is now available on my site. It currently ranges from .25mm to 1.3mm in diameter and I plan on going to 2mm or larger. Cables will be added next month when I get my next shipment of thread, They should range from 1mm to 3mm. For now though if you want synthetic cable order the cotton variant and send me an email and ask for an upgrade. This rope is made with Gutermann E thread which has zero fuzz, lumps, or inconsistencies. It also has a lower shine than some polyester threads tend to have. This rope has been heat treated and won't unravel when cut. CA glue or a lighter may still be needed to fix the rope ends so it may pass through blocks, hooks, and other tight spots. This rope has three strands and is right-handed. Thanks for looking in!
