King of Prussia by Iseaz - Corel - 1/42
BenD replied to Iseaz's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1751 - 1800
I like the unpainted gun carriage. The painted one with natural wheels is a fine choice too. The rest of the ship is looking really good. -
As everyone else has been saying, look into Vanguard Models. The large color instruction books in these kits will be incredibly helpful to a new builder. You were also looking into Caldercraft kits. I did my first build the HMC Sherbourne a few years back. It wasn't a hard kit but it did require a bit of determination.

I've had a set of Microbox drill bits for years now and have yet to break one. They are still really sharp even after drilling brass and copper. The set I bought were also very accurate in size. I bought mine at Cornwall Model Boats. You might be able to find the same on amazon, but supporting our hobby shops is worth the extra $10. https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/20-pce-microbox-drill-set-(modelcraft,-0.3--1.6mm).html https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=drill&PN=rdr4001%2Ehtml#SID=1121

This method for sail making is clearly a winner, I've even gone out and bought all the stuff I need to recreate it. Unbleached titanium is a really good color for sails. @hollowneck The lines twisting up look like polyester rope. I'm assuming it's from crafty sailor. I got a few bags of that stuff to see what it's like. It likes to twist together at all opportunities, also unravels like a tornado when cut. It's one of the reasons I heat treat my polyester rope, it mostly eliminates these effects.

Anyone out there working on a card model?
BenD replied to gagliano1770's topic in Card and Paper Models
I just couldn't help myself and bought the Shipyard kit HMS Wolf. I got the laser cut kit with all the bells and whistles, not as cheap as the one @catopower bought though. I got it online from https://ca.super-hobby.com/products/HMS-WOLF-The-10-Gun-Sloop-1752-skala-1-72.html . It was very affordable and had free shipping... how could I not. Also on that site on the product pictures they show all of the contents of the kits, very cool feature and more webstores should do this. Picture from Shipyards online store. https://shop.model-vessel.com/index.php?id_product=73&controller=product&id_lang=2 -

Recent replies sidebar has vanished.

It's reappeared. I didn't do anything, it just fixed itself. I'll just assume it was a programming glitch... -

I'm on a pc. The zoom thing did nothing. I've also used another browser and the same thing happened, the recent replies sidebar vanishes upon logging in and reappears when logged out... all of the other sidebar modules are still there, NRG Journal, Donations, Sponsors, etc. Strange -
I made my own ropewalk for producing rope. Well, at this point I've made at least 5 and am currently drawing the plans for #6. If anyone want's to make there own ropewalk you can find plans on this site. If you don't the Syren Rope Rocket is a decent piece of kit, and pretty affordable to be honest. @Trond Your HMS bounty is looking really good!

Polyester likes to go nuts. I do heat them so the rope doesn't unravel wildly when cut, but they do unravel and fuzz up when worked with. Id say use some CA glue or PVA and cut the fuzzy end off. On real ropes you would add whipping to the ends of the ropes.

While your anchor cable is not actual cable it's certainly better then the kit rope. If you twist three 0.8mm ropes together you should get a 1.6mm cable. Give it a try! This ship is turning out beautifully. This boxwood version is really pleasing to the eye.

Hello Everyone, Price Reduction! About a month ago I finished a new ropewalk, It has increased my production speed considerably. The headstock's top speed is 12000 rpm... It sounds like a jet taking off but it sure does the job fast. Because of this, I've repriced my whole product line. It's not a huge reduction, The fact that all my threads have gone up in price and I was able to reduce prices is great. The polyester rope received the largest price reduction (roughly 20%) since the Gutermann-E thread price wasn't increased by much. In other news, work has begun on adding some new polyester colors in the future. I'm planning on adding a darker tan/light brown color for running rigging and also looking for a new standing rigging color. I'll post some pictures when the time comes. Hopefully, I can release them in the fall. Thanks for looking in 🔻Link to my site below 🔻

HMS Snake by drtrap - Caldercraft
BenD replied to drtrap's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1751 - 1800
Yeah, Every time I pick up my HMS Snake I get discouraged a bit as well. Lots of scratch built replacement's and aftermarket parts needed. You've done well despite the kit's limitations. If you aver feel like building another ship model look at some of the Vanguard kits. They have much better instructions, parts, and wood. https://vanguardmodels.co.uk/ -
https://modelshipworld.com/topic/31240-ropewalk-a-cordage-engineers-journey-through-history/ for those interested in 1/1 scale ropemaking 😁 To say I'm obsessed would be an understatement.

This is probably the reason why I have some people only buying my cotton rope. I'm looking into some options for linen thread. I ordered some from a company in US, we will see if it can handle rope making or not. Really well combed and processed linen thread is king, just finding it in quantities for ropemaking is the problem. Linen is what you will find on most old models. It can last for ages.

Ropewalk: A Cordage Engineer's Journey Through History
BenD replied to BenD's topic in Nautical/Naval History
I've found two more videos. -
I have a video tutorial on sezings. He got me making them successfully in a few minutes. I can now do them now on the model without tools, just takes some practice.
