  1. One blaring issue I want to tackle with this new build....is. All these kit designs call for a pretty hefty keel. Cut from the same plywood the bulkheads are cut from. The only problem is, is the stem is not to scale. It is much too wide to be accurate. By reviewing the cutwater and stem of the Glory in her many photographs of them...you can see it is quite thin. 5"~6" probably. I'll most likely be adding the keel and stem after the hull is planked...and great care must be taken to fare in the bow and stern so as not to make the transition out of scale or unruly. Any input on this issue? Rob
  2. Indeed...my first was a mod of an existing molded hull...my second was a test run to see the shape and accuracy of the hull Mike and his friend in Australia designed...that is why I used gypsum to sculpt the hull. Now I hope to begin again with a good foundation...based on far more extensive research...by a team of devoted Glory enthusiast's...to include the original Glory hound...Mike Mjelde. Rob
  3. Great job Vladimir...clean work. I thought..Cutty Sark was your first ship model?...or was she your first clipper? Beautiful work. Rob
  4. I know...and I'm not insulted. BlueJacket..sells planking from their kits separately...you can buy in bulk from even model railroading outfits. I'm thinking I'm going to use my maple veneer and cut them into 1/16" planks. They go on easier and they conform far better to the curves. Ed actually cut all his small planks from a block of wood...like a 4X4...... Rob
  5. I can tell you...he milled it all from larger stock....every last piece. Yeah.....now you see what we're up against..... Rob
  6. Exactly. Now I need to get the strake material and what I plan on using for decking. Rob
  7. Isn't that cool...she's taken you over....hasn't she? McKay ships are amazing and doing the historical research makes it all the more fun. Thanks again. Rob
  8. Snug...we are beyond just drawings..we have then laser cut out now. Thanks for looking in. Rob
  9. 1/96 if that is OK for me..not sure about Rich. I'm sure it will be OK too....I'll try to get his feedback. OH I understand about the book...the copy I had him sign had great value to me...even before he signed it. I plan on getting another copy anyway for myself and having him sign that too. I can't thank you enough Vlad. Rob
  10. Vlad...Mike tells me he would love to sign a book for you. You did say you have a copy right? Mike is working from home for a short time and that would be the best time to get the signature. If you can't get your copy to me in a timely manner..I can get a copy in short order and have it signed for you if that is what makes more sense? Rob
  11. A book signature is in order....I'll talk to Mike and set up another meeting. Cool. Please PM me to let me know what I will need to pay for the bulkheads and shipping and how to make the payment. Plus....I'm assuming you had the frames made in 1/72....I'll go with that..but if it is at all possible can they be reduced to 1/96 for my special needs? If that will be to difficult I'll stick with what you have already established. Thanks again so much Vlad Rob
  12. Modifying the Revell Cutty's stem and increasing her bulwarks was what needed to be dome to even remotely make the hull pass off as Glory's. Building all the deck furniture and houses was the easy part. I was never going to correct the deadrise of the Revell hull...so I had to live with that blaring error. But now with your new drawn bulkheads and framing...I have a chance to go back and do it right and correct all the minor errors that bothered me so. Rob
  13. OM Goodness....Vlad....that looks fantastic. Wonderfully drawn and executed. Now if you could be so amazing and have two more sets made and send them to me and Rich........ I will pay whatever it costs for mine and I will pay for your set as well for compensation. Please let me know if that is possible for you.....I know it is a great imposition...but what a time saver and a great beginning....to all have the same hull to work with and then to enjoy us all building our own similar versions. This is a wonderful day and you did so well. She looks just amazing. We all put so much effort and energy into extracting her dimensions from simple 2D B/W images....it's just amazing. Rob
  14. Yep.....Glory is a flat bottom boat compared to all the others. This is the problem I ran into in my Curry Sark mod. She was way to round to really represent the Glory
  15. Pretty funny that the Glory model I build by using a converted 1/96 Revell Cutty Sark hull...is looking more like what we are after....despite the slight error of the stem and its width. I was making it us as I went from Mike's drawings. This is 11 years old...I was less a model maker then now. Rob
  16. I'll revisit the sources for you(I'm at work), but I'm pretty sure that is what the OM weight was. Another note is that both of these clippers(sisters) were extreme models. so was the Fish and the Staghound. Glory was a *Medium* design. And from what I've been gathering, that term can be subjective. It implies a heavier body, with a smaller deadrise...or flatter bottom(More like a downeaster). It doesn't imply that the entry is more bulbus...such as a whaler or man of war. We have clearly identified her to have an entry more like of the Flying Fish and the Staghound.. Glory has a 22ft copper line 25ft to rail measurement. Neither the Fish nor the Staghound have the sheere as the Glory and subsequently less distance from copper(water) line to rail. So it is hard to say that McKay used one of these clippers as the model for Glory. I think if Vladimir's bulkheads are representative of a full bodied model.....also with the extreme stem of Flying Fish...we cannot hope to be any closer to Glory's true figure then at any time ever. I'm so excited Rob
  17. It would probably be no more then sending a book and that is well within my budget(since money isn't an issue for me). 20 bucks is a great price too. If I was to know how much it would cost in total....I'd pay for your laser costs for your bulkheads for the service. Something to think about....it would be much appreciated. Rob
  18. Man Vlad that was fast. I wish I could get my 1/96 frames laser cut....I just don't know anyone around here who does that kinda work. Looks like you'll have your version build before me. Fantastic news...can't wait to see them Rob
  19. No problem Rich...I didn't notice...however, Star of Empire and Chariot of Fame were both 2050 tons OM From my sources And Glory was as you stated, 2102 tons OM. 4 to 7ft sheere can easily be compensated for in the line drawings. Plus the keel to waterline on the Star and Chariot seams quite different then that of Glory.
  20. I can't wait to see. Thanks for the reissue of the drawings...I will be able to cut the bulkheads out from them. However the aft keel section didn't come out all the way...the fantail portion failed to print in your drawing...I guess I'll have to make it up as I go. I will use the bulkhead distancing from each keel frame and fashion my own keel frame. I see you are building this as if it were a production model of the Flying Fish. Same design in bulkheads and framing as well as the bulwark build up. I don't have the ability to laser cut my bulkheads..so I will cut them out by hand as I did all my other models. Things are getting exciting now. I'll probably build this 1/96 version hull from balsa and then use hardwoods for the deck houses and other fittings. Rob
  21. Your doing a wonderful job on her. McKay spent his own money on 3 vessels...the Sovereign of the Seas, the Great Republic and the His last clipper Glory of the Seas. He knew he has something and he bet his own money on it.... No other ship builder ever did that. Following your build. Rob
  22. It's becoming more and more apparent, McKay probably used one of his *other* clipper designs when building Glory. These examples you bring forth are compelling. Glory is more like Star of Empire and Chariot of Fame and even Flying Fish then previously admitted. She has a rounded stern not elliptical and her entry is far sharper then previously thought. Interesting. Rob
  23. You are doing a great job Rich...I appreciate your attention to detail as we draw closer to the best hull possible for Glory. Rob
  24. Hey Vladimir....is it possible for you to darken the bulkhead drawing lines...on the series you sent me? They are so light they are hardly useable. I love then though...in 1/96...thanks again. Rob
