John Allen got a reaction from Keith Simmons in Polynesian canoe Holukea
I have a block of basswood 2x2x10 and will play with it, having basic carving tools and and no chisels will see how it goes(also no carving skills). If it seems overwhelming will go the frame route, will be easier. I think that your right on with frames and strips.
That being said your right they were carved out of Koa wood logs and to be faithful to the original builders probably should be carved from block. Hows that for being decisive!
Will see what others suggest and go with the overwhelming to carve or not to carve.
Thanks grsjax appreciate your input.

John Allen got a reaction from catopower in Polynesian canoe Holukea
Need advice, am taking a break from my victory and perusing a scratch build I want to tackle.
The Hokulea a double outrigger canoe that was built in the 70s and navigated the globe.
You Aussies and Kiwis should remember it made several stops in your areas
My problem do I use basswood blocks and carve the hulls.
Or basswood sheets that can be steamed and bent to form the outside hulls.
Any help will be appreciated just in planning stage boat will fall into the 24" range.
See attached
thanks John

Also meant to add if I uses frames and strips it may be easier could also get into the 30 to 36 inch range but need a super glass like finish on the hulls.
Thanks

John Allen got a reaction from popeye the sailor in HMS Victory by John Allen - Mamoli - Scale 1:90 - 5th build
Well I thought I better show some pics before everybody thought I had surrendered and given up the ship after cutting out all shrouds and ratlines.
I'm satisfied with the outcome and now can continue with upper shrouds futtocks and ratlines.
Had some repairs to complete I knocked off the bowsprit and dolphin striker and several gun ports, on one of the gun ports when using the nailer I caved in two inches of planking. This is the second time this has happened and I swore after the first I would throw it away and drill. After this second time I deep sixed it and donated to Davey Jones Locker.
Now all is well and I am a happy camper

John Allen got a reaction from klundsc in HMS Victory by John Allen - mamoli - 1/90
Need advice, when coming to the placing of the grenades in lower deck all I found looked more like cannon balls. Found some plastic beads 11/0 at a Wal-Mart but need some honest opinions, I have no ego so if more experienced modelers say it does not look right I will tear it out and redo before I proceed further.
They were to shiny and I brushed with a flat clear acrylic.
Also researched plank bending tools on this site. I had used a soldering iron on my armed launch and found it tedious but did not want to spend thr money for commercial plank benders. I cannot remeber the builders name but he used a tin can and tea candles. I tried it this date and was amazed. Bent 6 planks in less then 2 or 3 minutes. Tried wet and dry wood, wet seems to be faster.
To the point of lying in the gunports and start to plank, had stained decks which need 1 more sanding.

John Allen got a reaction from mischief in Work station clutter

You do not need any help I promised myself I would not be overwhelmed by clutter. A place for everything and everything in its place.
It created a huge problem I could never find anything. I was missing a mini-screwdriver and was accusing my wife of putting it up when she started laughing. She said and I quote "fool did you look in your hand!" true story.
I now love my clutter where I can find everything sooner or later Don't despair your good.

While we are on the subject of improvements......your workspace is WAY too clean. If my wife was to catch a look she would draw an obvious comparison to my space (with me on the negative side). Please, throw some random tools / wood / clamps around for my sake (at least when taking pictures).
Humbly, Mark
