I see I’ve still got Chris Watton’s attention, which reminds me to salute him for the wonderful interview in the recent issue of the NRG magazine. Also, nice to put a face to all of his communication on this site.

Many coats of paint, filler and sanding later…
Added the rudder hinges on too. Smooth, except as always on my builds, I struggle to get the planks neat near the bottom of the rudder post where they do show a little.

Masking tape removed. The brilliance of Chris’s design here is that the lower hull is fully painted without any risk of getting paint on any of the outer or inner wooden parts that will show. The line between the upper bulwarks and the white lower hull will be hidden behind black painted gunwales added later providing clear lines on the hull without the risk of paint bleeding under masking tape. Very clever and well thought out.

    A little update.

I am now out of machined pear block sets for the kits. I cannot buy any more because I sourced these from Russia, which, as mentioned before, a sanctioned country.

However, I have been in contact with HiSModel, and have ordered 20 Indy kits worth of machined walnut blocks - although these are costing me a little more than the pear machined blocks I had before, but I figured better to have the option than none at all.

I will order sets for the rest of my kits that had this option in due course. (Next will be Sphinx and Duchess)

First checking of brand new designs, and much fettling/fine tuning still to do...

    But overall, quite happy...

Second planking is now complete. Tapering more aggressively than in the first planking helped a great deal. Having not used tick marks to work out the extent of the tapering at each bulkhead I fell foul of tapering past bulkheads 1 & 2 whilst the planks needed to be wider here, so I needed to fill in the gaps. I haven’t detailed my planking journey here as technically it’s what not to do, and the end result is a little crazy paving in places, but with filler and sanding, smooth to the touch its close to what I’m aiming to achieve as the lower hull will be entirely painted.

The outer sternboard was clamped on (not glued) and the sternpost glued in place.
The outer sternboard has been removed again and the upper hull has been masked off for painting.
First coat of paint has produced a surprisingly pleasing result without any noticeable cracks  There are some areas where planks show through and the filler rougher than I’d like, but overall, this looks good to me for a painted hull and not too far off the end result I’m looking for.
More filler, sanding and another coat of paint… and repeat…

I have participated in previous Saturday morning workshops.  They are awesome!  Definitely interested in the upcoming June 15 workshop on sails!  May have to hold off on my Bluenose rigging and sail construction until then!! 🤣🤣

Sadly, yes; the same situation prevails with nautical museum exhibitions being curtailed in the U.K. and in the U.S. Not a new trend but a continuing one. Many museums are struggling to keep their doors open.

    Agreed with the above.

MSW is my happy place and my favorite place online.

MSW has really helped me develop my model making skills and is my number one source of inspiration and ideas.

Being an NRG member lets me support MSW and I enjoy reading the Journal.

One of these days, I’m going to buy the $99 USB drive to get the rest of the NRG Journal issues.

    Hi Keith,

was a no brainer after checking out the NRG homepage and some of the great ideas, messages and thoughts I got here form the forum already. I think it´s a place to make some new friends and fellows to step further down the road of scale models. So it´s worth supporting it for sure...

Something that we offer to members are the Virtual Workshops we offer throughout the year on Saturday mornings (10:30 AM Central).  We record the workshops and within a week or two they are available on the website for members to view as often as they want.
We have a new workshop on May 4 on Basics of the Air Brush.  We also have a two part one on June 15 on Creating Realistic Working Sails and Creating Furled Sails.  Check out the recordings in the Events section of the website.  Also, they are priced right - FREE!  All members will get an email with the Zoom link real soon.

Check out the NRG website thenrg.org  You can join for as little as $40 (US funds) with the Digital Edition.  It can be read on-line or saved to your computer.  You can print out articles for your private use (copyrights).
There is a downloadable pdf copy of a Journal you can read to see a typical Journal.  There is a lot of useful information on the site.  Like all hobby related magazines we can only print what is submitted.  We do pay for modeling articles so you might want to consider sharing with your fellow modelers and write an article - and get paid.
As others have said NRG membership helps support MSW.

    Take care,
    Kurt

Yes, but be aware that digital editions of the Journal are relatively new. Send a query to our editor, Paul Fontenoy, he'll have a good handle on when the Journal went digital (nrjeditor@gmail.com). Also, check out www.thenrgstore.org for Back Issues, Articles, etc. You'll discover yet another treasure trove of all things ship modeling there.

No biggie. Only you will miss the "extra" boat, B.E.
If you insist, I'd recommend getting one of Chris' superb 3D ones; a mix n' match selection...save the pear wood pieces for Christmas Holiday kindling.

I don't want to clog up Johann's wonderful build log by continuing the comments on museums, but it is all about money.

And the continual dumbing down, like you see on TV documentaries, where the makers are attempting to catch the interest of a generation used to stimulation from fast moving images.  So many museums are having to reduce their displays and focus instead on eye catching and interactive exhibitions to catch the interest of young people - and let's hope they are successful in this.

In some museums, I've found, a room that may once have been cluttered with many artefacts has been transformed to highlight a single object, surrounded by supporting information to truly bring out the object's importance and relevance to historical record.  Done well, this is brilliant, as long as specialists like us have an opportunity to get into the storerooms to see what we want to find out about.  And again, this is about money, in order to finance a museum's cataloguing, storing, and archiving costs.

On the topic of museums, I recommend a visit to the Naval Museum in Madrid if you can get there. It still has a superb display of models of all types and sizes. A wonderful place.

Mark, it's probably the cost of display maintenance. There doesn't seem to be as much money being donated to museums these days and reduced attendance. Folks don't feel they need to go to the museum because Mr Google is right there waiting to guide them through whatever interest was put in the search box.

I was fortunate enough to have visited the Museum just before it closed. I felt it was one of the best museums I have ever visited. Had the same thought about the Science Museum in England in the late 70's. At least I am fortunate to be so close to the Annapolis Museum where ship models take center stage thanks to a generous grant from an earlier class.
