Yes, of course, soon its time to start coppering again and it will be interesting to see how the Vanguards copper comes out compared to my HMS Snake (Caldercraft). Here is the result after sanding. I am no masterplanker but it looks much better than my previous builds. Boxwood is amazing to work with and i am really happy i went with the master shipwright version. However, there are some colour variations in the wood. I tried to use similar planks and picked out the most "yellowish ". Some are almost gray in comparison.

It aint pretty but i saved probably 20 strips of boxwood...

Back with Miss Speedy... and continue with the 2nd planking 🙂

The one that is missing is the 1:64 version and if Amati delivers as promised i dont really see the point with another Victory considering that almost every manufacturer has one. There are so many other larger ship that are not available in 1:64 which would be great to see!

Here is also another advantage with Chris design. MDF with close bulkheads is a joy to shape off. The traditionel ply requires much more efforts to sand so i can understand that some builders stop to early in the process.

1st and 2nd planking on a kit are two completely different things. 1st has mostly to do with creating shape but the finish can look terrible. 2nd you should you really need to make an effort and its all about the finish. I cant imagine how difficult a one planker project must be, I am definitely not ready for that yet.

I really like this build, well done! Maybe u have written it earlier but what type of Wood are u using for the decks and the 2nd planking?

I think u did fine. Remember there will be planks on both sides of the gunpattern so i dont think it need to be stressed to perfection. Also the MDF skeleton is easy to work with but abit more fragile than the normal ply so u need to be careful and not use to much power when building the hull. Go with the flow...

Do you think it will be the original version with 64 guns or the razeed with 44? Or two options in one kit, but that sounds challanging to design...

So far Vanguards has come up with Alert and Speedy in various mtrl options as well as quality accessories to "pimp" ur other kits such as deadeyes, hearts, ladders. As i understand, the next kit to come out is an unnamed smaller vessel where we have gotten a teaser skeleton. Chris has also been quite clear that the 50gun HMS Bristol is under development but he wants to ramp up his business with the minor vessels first. Various of other frigattes has been mentioned as future possibilities but i dont think anything is written in stone yet. Personally, I really enjoy following his thread and seeing how things progress. Its always exciting when something new is posted. I will much likely buy more kits from him as they are the best. I also want to support the startup of Vanguard models, making sure we get more interesting kits in the future. I hope he sticks with 1:64 and the Royal Navy for a while since that is my direction too. Bellona would be really great to see and a high priority for me if it comes out.

Ah.. so both Iron and Rope is used at the same time on this ship.

Bob, u got a great build there. Museum Q in my opinion! Yes, if ur only into minor boats its fully understood a larger scale is better.

I dont think u need to worry that much for the first planking. Just get the gunports in the right position. Later u sand everything down and use some woodfilling where its needed. It dont have to be pretty. Its the 2nd planking where all efforts should go Into.

I thought this photo kind of explained it all. I use the heatgun for the 2nd planking. I am not that careful during the 1st. U just need to get the shape right. I soaked the gunpatterns in hot water and placed it in the rabbit and put it in place with PVA. It was a very simple fit with no adjustments.

Its not like i am running out of current work yet....haha

Furthermore, looking into the "competition" there are a few other kits that kind of are in the same segment, mostly from Caldercraft. Mars, Crusier, Jealoise, Badger, Supply brig. Perhaps even the Russian Mercury. Those are larger 2 masters but doesnt come near the beautiful lines of Speedy IMHO.

I am guessing that he intends to do most of his line up in 1:64. Yes its a very small brig but with all lasercut parts and details i dont think the scale will be a problem and as i said earlier, I prefer to do all my builds in the same scale. 1:48 would definitely take it up a notch but other larger kits would be very impractical in enourmous size so i think 1:64 is the sweetspot. You get some extra stuff in this version, Chris thread explains it. When it comes to boxwood its the strips for the 2nd planking.

Well we will see how much i will be able to do. Building takes alot of time. Yes, Chris Bellona is one of my absolute favourite builds on this forum. So i hope he will do a 1:64 version 🙂

I still have another week in the sun until i get back home and can continue on my beloved Speedy. But since we are entering a new decade I thought i would do a post on what I am dreaming to do for the upcoming 10 years 🙂 First of all I am already doing 5 parallell builds in various stages so basically i have to focus on those before starting anything new. Hopefully i can finalize my Speedy and Victory this year which will be the priority. I hope to get the decks ready for Snake and Granado. Maybe some planking on the Diana. I am probably not the only one that look into the various manufacturing catalogs and make plans for future builds. These plans may likely change and its always the uncertainty of how much time the builds will take so nothing written in stone. But here is some of the future kits i have been looking into. I can also say that I am mostly into the Royal navy 1750-1820 and i very much want to avoid different scales and Will try to Only build in 1:64. Starting from the largest ships but not likely I Will build in this order. HMS Victory 1:64 Amati Even though i am already doing the Corel 1:98, this will be the kit of the century. Extremily large so i have to move to a bigger place in order to just be able to put it anywhere. HMS Bellona A really beautiful ship. 74 guns and its also great to be have the AOTS book to help out. Unfortunately, there is no available 1:64 kit version out there yet. Coral has a 1:100 version and Chris Watton did a 1:72 for Amati which has not been released. But who knows what the future will bring? Perhaps my first scratchbuild? HMS Agamemnon from Caldercraft Nelsons favourite and a "mini" Victory with one less deck. I also loves the look of the crow feet in the rigging. HMS Bristol from Vanguards models Not yet available but it has a similar look to Belona but slightly smaller with 50 guns. HMS Pegasus from Amati Cool looking ship and perhaps more doable considering its size. But i would never build it in walnut. The smaller bomb vessel from Caldercraft I am already building the Granado and this can be a nice complement. A one mast ship Various alternatives here: Alert from Vanguards, Lady Nelson from Amati or Sherbourne from Caldercraft?

This is basically the parts that remains to attach to my Victory... well besides from a whole lot of thread. I hope i Will do much more on this kit during 2020.

Just a post on how i try to keep all parts of my builds organized. I bought lots of cheap boxes. Things that can easily be identified without the numbers i simply cut out and move. Its really handy instead of having everything in the Main box. And i clearly mark each box where i store them so i dont have to mix different kits up.
