  1. Thanks alot. This is the 5th hull that I am building so hopefully I have learnt a one or two things…. If I understand right this was one of the first designs Chris made. Its a really beautiful fregatte and well designed…. buuuuut, its done the old classical way where the builder had to do alot himself. And also, new methods when it comes to making precut parts has come up (such as lasercutting) but this kit relies on old technology so everything dont have that precise fit as i am now used to with my Speedy. Yes agree, it will be really interesting to see once Vanguards start producing some larger kits. My heart cant wait to see that… but my brain hopes it will take looong time so I dont start another build before finalizing what I have already taken on.
  2. Innerwalls done! Now prepering for 1st planking. Old kit so not a perfect fit, added some mtrl at a couple of places.
  3. I dont think this is a "Speedy-kit" question. Its more of a generic issue when it comes to rigging and in what order you do it. However, since Speedy is a small kit and only have two masts and less thread to put everywhere i think you can mount them off the ship instead of building them up on the ship. If it was the 1/64 Victory you would probably want to slowly build it up because its so huge.
  4. The deck is finally scrapted and finished. Most of it wont be that visable so i am kind of satisfied with the result.
  5. Decided to take a short break from all the tiny details on my Speedy and do some more heavy work on my Diana. I start to be abit tired of looking at its skeleton on the shelf and with some planks will make it look better at least. Soon the first deck is ready. I did use extra ordered maple but the quality was rough so lots of sanding on edges. Decided to keep it simple and not to do any fancy pattern as some other builds here.
  6. I didnt use the false deck and made my own maple deck instead. The false deck is a great addition to the kit for people that want to speed up the build. Personally i wanted my Speedy to have a similar look as my other builds so thats why I did it in maple. But it took a few days to get in place.
  7. I think i did the mistake here and dryfitted it to see if needed adjustments.. it didnt... in fact it squised so well into place it was really difficukt to get it out again and put in some glue...
  8. Speedy/Flirt has in a very short time become the most popular build in the group i think. It will be really interesting to see the final ships from us all and the variations we done.
  9. It has a door! My speedy didnt come with the lower deck but the kit has evolved since then.
  10. You seems to read in much more in my post than i wrote. Noone was critizied, its just simply that a kit Chris designed 25 years ago will have very difficult to compete against his new one. I am currently building both Diana and Speedy. Diana is a real beauty... but if i hadnt already bought the Caldercraft kit i would had waited for Vanguards to come with a new frigate simply because it feels very outdated. Caldercraft could easily update Diana to todays standards if they still want to be the top notch manufaturer. New plans, instructions, mtrl, and start lazercutting the details....thats it
  11. The first version of Speedy had 4 fragile parts at the Stern which just a few months later was upgraded to birch and should not be a problem at all now. The rest of the MDF is not fragile but its a different style than building in ply.
  12. Yes, but i think its very strange that Caldercraft dont do anything to keep up with the new competition. They use to be the top kit developer, but living on 25year old successes dont last forever.
  13. Yes, just a small thing like that... adding numbers/instructions on pieces. Saves us at least on hour of marking work and also makes the design more foolproof.
  14. Really nice work there! My Snake is on hold at the moment but will start up again after i finished my Speedy. Caldercraft have many very beautiful ships but they really need to revisit them and make severe upgrades (both plans and design) if the want to stay on the market. The kits from Amati and in particular Vanguard models have surpassed them by light years.
  15. As an engineer, its great to see how Chris designs evolve over time and small new things are added making everything simplier. My Speedy from November almost feel out of date when i see some of the new solutions... haha.
  16. To the lower decks... my Proxxon disksander is really useful when making smaller strips that need to have the exact same lenght. I started of with gluing the first and last plank. Then squized down the rest with a pincette. You should not that the two ladders slightly differs in size and mounted in two different directions on the boat.
  17. Thanks, i am still fiddling with the crossguards... hope to get contact soon... Yes, i predrilled the holes for the gunrigging but they clogg up a little with the red paint so just a touch up. But there are lots of other holes too to drill for various of things to attach. Sometimes its also abit difficult to figure out exactly where some of the eyebolts should go especially at the bow. The plans are slightly unambigious on some points. But i guess it doesnt matter that much.
  18. Lots of ringbolts to add everywhere and you really need to be carefull not to drill to deep.
  19. Thanks, its alot of work with the details now. I hope to get it over soon so i can start with the masts and rigging. Not sure yet about the canons. We will see if i do the extra blocks but its really tiny work to get in place.
  20. Working on adding the chanels, rudder and other details... soon it is time for a proper photoshoot to show how she look like 🙂
