What a great build this is turning in to. All that PE you plastic builders really sets the bar high.

Several pages back you built up the underside of the bridge, will any of that be visible without a mirror? Not that it matters, you know its there.

Getting caught up here, so sorry to hear about your Uncle, my condolences.

I have missed a lot it appears, Map building and converting, inter-language skills, blood sacrifices.... You know how to stay busy.

It is all paying off, the build looks great.

Do you have a build log?? I would love to follow along. 

Don’t take my build as gospel, I have made more than a few mistakes. (Mast woldings) In other cases I have just done what worked for me at my level of skill. 

As far as the length of time, most of that has been my job, it tends to take over my life for months on end. 

I will have a bit to show this weekend I think. Right at the moment it’s 3:30am and I am on a break at work. Hope to be back on a day schedule Thursday.

Carl, Steve, thanks and thanks to those who hit the like button, its all appreciated. I AM a bit fussy about certain things, I get something in my minds eye and it has to be that way. Comes from years of being told, "Make it look like the drawings"

So, 2-1/2 hours later I have a replacement carved. pretty fast for me. They are still not awsome but I think I can live with them. The replacement went easier than the others, I imagine if I kept tinkering and remaking I could get them better. From 18" away a lot of the @&^$#!! fades away.

I have started relieving the sides for the shrouds on the top block

Never tried it myself, but I have heard of builders using sewing needles for applying CA. Apparently they cut the end off midway through the eye. That acts like an old ink pen, then dipping it in a puddle like O.C. mentioned. They say after it gets all gummed up you can burn the excess off the needle with a lighter or candle.

ARRGH, Between Friday night, yesterday morning and today I have managed to carve 3-1/2 sister blocks. 3-1/2  because as I was finishing up the last one I managed to break it in the middle. I epoxied it back together, put it in the oven for an hour with the pilot on and then left it out for another hour to cool (epoxy is soft when warm). When I un-clamped it it just fell apart......... Murphy strikes again!!!

I re-carved the Main blocks, as I was shaping them I was referring to the lower picture and forgot I was making the upper, I cut off the bottom dovetail. I reshaped them, they are better than the first go around but still not great.

These Fore blocks are TINY!!! They were coming out somewhat better than the Main until this:

Oh well, I am not at work, Better Half is home and the Dodgers won in the 12th after a power outage last night. I am just glad the power did not go out while I was in the restroom!! Or worse, walking down the steps to my seat with a beer! That could have been interesting.

Lou, keep us posted on your steam iron idea. What mark was referring to is called Kerf Cutting.

All this talk of mosquitoes reminds me of a back packing trip in the Tetons a bunch of years ago. They were so thick they drove us out. Well that and the multiple snow fields we had to cross to get over the crest and we had no snow axes for arrest if we fell. One of the transverses was across a hill on a 60º or so slope and 2-300 yards across on a very narrow path. It was a very long slide ending in a small pond surrounded by snow. The next morning when we went to head back instead of risking it I discovered the mosquitoes had got me all across my shoulders where the straps sat. Two days of torture.

Thats nothing to be ashamed of. It looks pretty good to my eye, a bit of sanding, a spot of filler and paint, it will look great.

Carl, Better Half went and left me in charge of the animals and the house for a few days, she even cleaned before she left. Silly woman!

I re-scaled the sister blocks and spent some more time looking at "Masting and Rigging" I think the shape is better now. there is still some shaping and thinning to do. Hopefully I can get two parts for each mast to be reasonably similar. I need to find somebody that has a 2mm compass lead harder than 2h, I think that may help a bit. When I went to 6h on my mechanical pencils that gave me more consistent line thickness and more accurate parts.

Welcome home Lou! Sorry to hear you had to cut your trip short, look on the bright side, you get more build time!!

Your right about the stars, white they are not.The air is better than it was, when you fly in to LAX there isnt that dirty brown carpet reaching into the canyons of the San Gabriel Mtns. We would leave in a heartbeat but my work is either here or Florida. I care neither for humidity or hurricanes.

Now, you have been back for what, 16 hours? where is the update?? 😀
