cog got a reaction from John Allen in Black Pearl by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - 1/72 Scale
it seems the further we are "digitised" the less social and humane we become. I get the feeling some organisations think we have the StarTrek transporter at hand and money is no longer an issue Get some rest and try to keep your spirits up, you know where to find us ...

Good day all, as always sincere thanks for all the replies and likes,
So onwards with the channels - I continued with my process super gluing the deadeyes to the channels, and attaching the chainplate legs then painting and weathering.
I have the two completed on both port and starboard, and also the mainmast channel on the one side.
Here are the pics -

I like air above a boat, shows it's relative smallness, and it does not look cooped up

Thanks for all the information about the leather. Griphos, I shall check out Tandy because there is an outlet not far from me. Greg, I went to the Site you linked to and I was not able to find the size of the sheets that they are selling and at $50 per sheet I am thinking that there might be some better solutions.
Eberhard I did also note the device that Johann made good for narrow strips, I am not sure about wider sheets though. Pat, Thanks.
I am starting to glue the corners on the outside of the cockpit now, once they are all glued i will do the final finishing all round then ad some Teak oil to finish.

I guess that Smit Rotterdam had those copper coloured props. Still looking for a pic....
(which turned in something else due to heavy use, so: 'do you build 'as new', or 'at the end of her life'.
Here is 'new', unfortunately in BW-photography
Pic found here: http://www.hobbyjan.nl/site/index.php?id=109&pagina=1

The bow section is also done.
The blocks are glues and shaped.
Now a little stern and primer time.
But that will be for next week I think.
Picture time.

That's a spectacular finish Patrick. Nevermind Luke and his offsiders, keep your maintenance shop locked as I may just be tempted to sneak in and blast it with my 'enlarger' gun and make off with a new toy
cheers

It looks very sharp Patrick, you have done an amazing job on the boat, the style is not really my "cup of tea" but your model does do the full size one justice.

cog reacted to luponero in Santa Maria by luponero - FINISHED - scale 1/50 - carrack - from diagrams of Adametz
Some updates on the work of the formwork,
the timber used is oak and as you can see the tables have an inclination with respect to the vertical as indicated in the drawings by Adametz,
between the board and the board the edge has a bevel, giving a shape that resembles a defensive palisade,
you can see on the plank, the opening for the passage of the bowsprit tree, to make it was necessary a long time and "file" to avoid doing damage on the deck of the bridge
up to the insertion of the bowsprit (which is now possible to remove)
to make the tree I came back of the walnut tree, (surely making all the pieces in self-construction is very nice, but it takes a lot of time)
insert the last image with the view of the bow, the tree fits into the trimmer (the frontal wood in which the tree passes is walnut with the typical stains
that characterize it)
)
regards
luponero

cog reacted to Louie da fly in Mediterranean Galleys by yancovitch - FINISHED
A nice size. About the only reliable dimension I know of for the length of galleys is that the length of the ship is determined by the interscalium (distance between the rowing benches). The optimum is about a yard, give or take - longer and the ship becomes too heavy; shorter and the oarsmen get in each other's way. So a twenty-oared galley would have ten interscalia = about 30 feet - plus the length of the prow and the stern.
If you want to make a trireme, you might be interested in this video -
Enjoy!

oh....only 15-18 inches......probably should have all been the same scale, but i figured that would be guess work, so i didn't bother.....they hopefully will all be in the same case, like a study of styles.......and there's still a viking to come....and who knows...i might go for a trireme too haha...vic

Yes, contemporary representations often don't bother to show the blocks etc, and sometimes don't even show the ropes. One source that might be helpful is at http://nautarch.tamu.edu/academic/alum.htm - you may find archaeological artefacts that will help. TAMU covers ships from the entirety of time and often has papers on this kind of thing.

Um . . . what mediocre workmanship? They look very good to me. In my experience, ship modellers worry far more than necessary about tiny failings in their own work which nobody else can see. If you're really concerned about some error, just regard it as a learning experience rather than as a fault - something you'll handle better next time.
But just keep on with these galleys - I think they look great, and something to be proud of.

Shading, it means you add dark and light sections on it before you overspray with the diluted colour, establishing depth and highlights. Now you have an even colour all over the turrets, whilst if you use shading, you add some artificial depth to them. HAve a look at this build:
quite educational
