I almost screwed up my mast step, but luckily I caught it looking at the plans one last time! i was supposed to trim it so there was 1/16” from the edge to the hole.

So first I started by gluing the easy pieces together per the instruction manual. I scribed the line on the bottom plank.

Welcome to another addition of simple boats built by Dave. I have gone down the rabbit hole of having more kits then years left on this earth. I can only hope I get to all of them...I can not wait to retire! so here is the box and insides for post #1...since it was an EBay find, someone had already taken all of the pieces out of the wood blanks and didn’t break them! I was missing half of the stem so I had to scratch build a new one. Practice!

I have been adding more coats of poly satin finish on...so far so good! I also finished the seats. I should be wrapping this one up by end of week for sure.

Decided on yellow ochre for the bulwark inner planking. I think the contrast is nice. Painted the waterway black.

I pretty much copied the handle design on the plan. The instructions said to use a scalpel, but I used a round file and made the groove and then sanded them into the tear drop shape. Easier then I thought!

I am just following the instructions that came with the kit, however it is mentioned that the gunwale should be laid out first. You can see where I marked it out. It mentions coming back to install later. I’m not sure there is any right or wrong way, whatever works for you I would think!

Welcome! Albatross looks like a great ship, hope to see a log of your own. I’d love to follow as I have been looking at this kit recently.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
