realworkingsailor got a reaction from king derelict in Hawker Typhoon Mk 1b by Realworkingsailor - FINISHED - Airfix - 1/72
Thanks, everyone, for all your patience! I received a small package in the mail today, and I’m pleased to report that my replacement parts have arrived safely!! I can now resume my build and see it to completion!
Overall I am pleased with Airfix’s response. I would suggest that anyone else with kit issues shouldn’t hesitate to contact them, just be patient.
On with the build!! 😁

I've got the 1:32 scale big brother of this kit to do when I get a round to-it. You are an inspiration Andy. Your work is beautiful.

Great to know. Rare nowadays that companies will do that. My how things have changed over time and how much we once took for granted.

Back to the Holt tractors. The injection marks on the inside of the tracks are massive. Primer coat them scrape back again, I’m not going to go to war with the inboard ones as you won’t see them .

At the model show two weeks ago, they sold raffle tickets to raise money to help pay expenses. Tickets were a dollar each or thirty tickets for twenty dollars. I bought thirty tickets. There were multiple jars where the tickets could be placed with each jar representing a particular prize group. I put my tickets in a 1:32 aircraft jar, a 1:48 aircraft jar, a ship jar, and a paint & accessory jar. Multiple drawings were pulled each hour of the show and one grand prize drawing at the end. I hit one drawing in each of the four categories I entered. It was a lucky day I guess.

If you’re looking for random opinions, (and mine can get very random if needed 🤪), I’d say leave it open, bombs or not. You could display them beside the model on a bomb trolley or something, if you felt.
For my Wellington, I’m very happy I left the bomb bay open and would have done so even if I didn’t get the aftermarket PE.
Appropriate or not, showing off some of the “guts” can make for a nice interesting model.

realworkingsailor reacted to Egilman in Blackburn Buccaneer S.2C by CDW & AJohnson - FINISHED - Airfix - 1:48
According to the texts I have, It depends on where it served and what era... The original Buccs serving with the RN filled the same role as our A-4's, low-medium speed delivery of multiple weapons...
As time went on the role changed... The Bucc's had outstanding low level flight characteristics and with the bomb bay designed to deliver Nuclear Weapons she was phased in as the RN's nuclear penetrator aircraft, the same as our navy's Vigilante's
It's last role was with the Royal Airforce, it served the same function as our F-111's, high speed, nap of the earth nuclear delivery, in fact the Royal AF decided to take over retired RN Bucc's instead of purchasing new F-111's.... In this role hard points were added to the wings for guided munitions, and the bomb bay was filled with either a partial droppable fuel tank or a full bay long range fuel tank that was not droppable...
They served in this last role until the aircraft was finally retired due to airframe stress failures that overtook the aircraft...
And a note on my sources... I have three books on the Blackburn Buccaneer's... When I found the info in them, I inquired to the publishers of I could post some photos and selected texts from them to the forum...
They told me no.... They do not allow free use of their materials... (even though most of those materials they obtained for free)
They insisted their copyright's be honored...
That's why I can't post this stuff for your own eyes which is my usual practice...
Those books are available on the internet if you know where to look... {chuckle} (and they know it)
If anyone else has more info, please chime in I hate doing things this way, I prefer to share openly...

realworkingsailor reacted to James H in HMS Indefatigable 1794 (prototype) by James H - Vanguard Models - 1:64 - FINISHED
For your info, my HMS Indefatigable build will be published as a two-part article in the Model Boats magazine, with the first part available in this month's mag.
It's the Model Boats mag that first drew me into this hobby with Keith Julier's period ship builds. If it wasn't for him, then I doubt MSW would exist, and my interest in this hobby.

Here's the intro pages for Part 1 of my article.

Finally, after too much time spent on "life things" and some experimentation, I'm making progress. Ship's wheel, binnacle are finished and dummy masts in place (not clued) but still need some paint.
I painted the wheel to look like wood mostly. I didn't like the color scheme in the instructions. I then wasted a lot of time trying figure out how to glaze the binnacle. Tried numerous ways but even though the glazing looked good to my eye, it prevented the panels sitting flush with each other and "shelving".
My next step is to back up and get the catheads installed. I had to wait on some new blades as I wanted something a bit sharper and longer lasting than the X-acto blades I was using. So... on-wards....

realworkingsailor reacted to Chuck in Sloop Speedwell 1752 by Chuck - Ketch Rigged Sloop - POF - prototype build
Just a small update on the progress. Getting into the stern framing now. But first I needed to add 3 more aft cant frames under the quarter piece.
The cant frames are self explanatory and the same as the others. Just sand off the char and add them. But before I added them under the quarter piece I had to glue a small block on the inside of the quarter piece on both sides. The block is laser cut and matches the shape of the bottom of the quarter piece. This makes the area thicker which we will need when we fair the inboard side. This will all be covered up on the inboard side so it wont show. It will be planked over on the inboard side.
The small blocks will be faired along with the inboard frames when we do that much later. But it is probably a good idea to start that now and do a little preliminary removal of material. Its just easier to do at this point. I did it after gluing them in but they could just as easily be shaped before you glue them in.
Now the stern framing starts. First up are the fashion pieces. These are very very complex. This hull has a square tuck much like the Cheerful. So to simplify things it will be made in two layers. Only the first layer will be added at this time. They are laser cut for you and 5/32" thick. There are laser etched lines on both sides. You can see how I faired the shape into it following the etched reference line. The two ends also need to be tapered slightly. I am talking very slight tapering to sit against the deadwood and under the wing transom. The other side of the piece has those etched reference lines. Just sand in the bevel to match on both ends. Then give it a test fit.
I found it easier to test fit these while the hull was upside down. They will need to be 1/8" away from the stern post as mentioned. This was easy enough to do. I just drew a reference line in pencil. I used a 1/8" wide strip and held it against the stern post and just drew the line on the deadwood.
When test fitting these the bottom will sit along the curved edge on the deadwood. Right along the bearding line. Try and get a nice clean and tight fit there. The top end will fit under the bottom of the wing transom. The aft edge is flush with the same on the wing transom. Then I faired them along with those last three cant frames I added. Its all coming together now. Just a bit more framing to go.
Next up will be that last aft cant frame. It actually sits against the fashion piece we just added. This is why that needed to be added first. Then a small cant filler will be added which essentially finishes up all the hull framing. After that there are the stern frames and a few odds and ends to finish it all up.
