Bob Hunt's "Hanna Practicum" gave me the foundation and confidence to start scratch building. After 30 years of building kits, possessing and reading many books, never took me beyond this. Thanks to Bob, I am building a scratch Swan class ( also with a practicum TFFM). I never would have tried without such a positive experience. Any quibbles or critiscms pale to insignificance.

As I ended my post with IMHO, it was stated as that. My comments are not insignificant as yours are not insignificant. I’m happy his practicums helped you, they do not help others as much. As stated, it’s the nature of the hobby, but not insignificant.

  2. I know I’m late to this but I bought the Fair American practicum. When I emailed him with questions concerning the disks, his response was quite condescending. I’ll never buy anything from him again based on that correspondence alone. Plus, the information as others have stated, seems rudimentary. This is just MHO though.

  3. Ok everyone, so I’ve figured out I’m terrible at keeping logs. I start building and it was full steam ahead. I have finished the boat, aside from the oars. I made the stand out of some scrap wood I had laying around. It’s not perfect and lots of mistakes but it’s done and I enjoyed it! I will include some pics I took along the way.

  4. Ok so I had a little time this evening and was able to get in a little planking to the inside of the boat. I used very warm water to apply heat and soften the wood and gently bent the planks and then clamped them to the frames so they can dry. The instructions are vague at best...

  5. Started this kit and it has proven to be tougher than the Artesania Latina Whale boat so far. The box says it’s from 1982! The wood quality doesn’t seem to be as good. Instead of the pieces being laser cut, they are more pressed, so I’ve had to use my mini jig saw at times. The keel was badly warped and quit a few of the ribs were too. I soaked them warm water and ironed them flat. I soaked the deck too before temporarily pinning it in place. I almost didn’t start this but I figured what the hey, if I really mess up it was given to me and it’s all a learning process anyway!

I have the keel secured with the rips and the false deck is secured also. I’ve started forming the front and back wood forms. I’ve been using a combo of cynoacrylic and wood glue to fix the pieces in place.

  6. So I started on another kit but it proved to be a bit over my head so I have started with this kit. So far it has been straightforward. There seems to be enough plank work to get me ready for more advanced kits to come. I have NO experience and I’m building the kit On a limb 😬. I know I have plenty of advice and help from this forum and will be using it...a lot. Please lend all the Crits and advice you can give me. It will be a slow process as I’m sure most of these type kits are but so far it’s been very relaxing. Thanks for tuning in!
