Mirabell61 reacted to shipmodel in USS/SS Leviathan 1914 by shipmodel - FINISHED - 1/200 - troop ship/ocean liner
Hi all –
I hope my countrymen all had a good Thanksgiving and everyone's favorite football team, whether round or oval, won.
Unfortunately, I root for the NY Giants. Oh well . . .
Here is the next segment of the build. As before, mostly photos with captions.
The final major components of the ship were the masts, which also acted as the cranes for the cargo booms. Here they are in photographs.
And how they turned out.
The mast tops anchored the shrouds and stays, and the single and triple blocks of the boom tackle were secured here as well.
I could not fit any available triple blocks for the topping lift tackle so I used doubles.
The lift tackles reeve through double blocks at the deck just inboard of the shroud turnbuckles.
There are four shrouds, with ratlines only between the inner two, though there are swifters every fourth ratline that go across all four.
The bases of the booms have clevis joints that fit in a ring around the base of the mast.
There is a multi-headed steam winch for each boom, set in a circle on deck around the mast.
A large searchlight sits on a railed platform on the foremast.
On the troop ship a large lookout station was hung below the searchlight.
Its peculiar shape had to be pieced together from segments of plastic tube turned inside out.
The final few details to finish the ship will be covered in the next installment.
Till then, be well.

Thanks, guys, for the compliments and likes.
Sorry I'm not giving a more complete explanation, but the techniques are pretty much the same as explained previously.
I'll go into a bit more detail when I get to making the ocean display base.
Keith - the blocks and winches are from Bluejacket. Everything else is scratch-built.
More soon

Continuation part 7: Finishing the hull
7.2. Painting the hull
Time to paint the hull. I start with painting it with primer.
With a primer layer on the hull a lot of the imperfections of the planking become conspicuous.
I apply a layer of paint putty and sand it. After that again primer, putty and sanding. Now the hull is more or less acceptable for the finishing coat.
My system to mark the waterline is very basic: I slide a set square with a pencil attached to it along the hull. The waterline marks join at the bow and at the stern, so I can be confident that they are fairly accurate.
I tape the rub rail and the waterline and paint the above water part with satin paint in cream color. The paint is laid in three layers with sanding in between it.
Same procedure below the waterline: here I use dark red.
The finished hull.

10.5 Main sail sheet traveler
To make the main sail sheet traveler I bow a 2 mm brass tube in shape and slide the traveler ring over it. The travel area of the ring is limited by two brass rings which are soldered at each side of the traveler.
To make the base of the traveler I slide again two brass rings and two 4 mm tubes over both ends and solder them together.
The bottom ends of the 4mm tubes are hammered flat.
The traveler in place on the transom.
Thank you to follow.
Thank you for the likes.
And thank you for the constructive comments.
Till next week!

Yes sir there is. Just look at the ones in the gallery. What you seeing on them is not a lining but the cells and the side of the frames, at least on the English ships. Gary

Gary,
Is there a port stop along the bottom of the port? I don't remember where I've seen that at this moment. I'll have to do some digging.

Thank you Nils! What have you been up to? Miss your builds.
Hello Kevin Denlay, what a pleasant surprise hearing from you! Yes, indeed, it's been a few years since our last correspondence. Computers do have a tendency to self destruct, how well I know. I am on my third hard drive! The one that crashed was not fully recoverable and still have a few issues.
ref the stern pics, I really had to think long and hard about posting them after my promise to you. I figured though that now the wrecks are gone and no other record exist of that section of the wreck, these wonderful people on this forum would benefit from it in tying in the possible battle station of my father. Thank you for understanding.
I am sending you a PM with my e-mail address.
Cheers,

Hey Nils, yes, thanks and I found your Zeeboot build. Will try to follow. Nice job!
@Kevin, re stern photo, yes, understand completely about having pride of workmanship. Now it being the only record of that stern portion available, me "breaking my word" seems to be a blessing - - in light with the removal of the wreck. That particular photo has done more for me then you or anyone can fathom. This is based on the one on one conversation I had with a Kapitein ter Zee rated officer I had when serving in the KL (Royal Air Force), 1954 - 1955. I guess I have mentioned it somewhere in this build log.
I'll get back with you at your personal e-mail address.
Cheers

I have been absent from the forum for a little while because I have been caught up with summer model railway stuff. I have to squeeze past the boat models as i go back and forth to the bench. The garden railway needed some maintenance and well you all know where that leads. I have also needed to spend time in the house with Judy so took up a kitchen table work spot to work on a couple of sculpy figures for the 1/8th scale Montague's Carriage .
Carriage and railway.
Which led to trying the live steam loco for the first time, it ran very fast and so i needed to build an inertial wagon to give it something to work against which led to a load of work.
This was the final version of the gear train. and then it needed to be tested.
It worked very well and so then needed to be dressed up a bit.
Here is a Mars on a test run
So even though I have not been active here I have been busy with model work all the same.

Thanks so much Nunnehi, Geoff, Art, Jeff, Grant and Dave for the nice comments, and thanks also to the "likes".
Grant, worse than the feeling of frustration was the feeling of utter stupidity.
Art, I've been working on Chuck's Winchelsea.

Here you go: a few photo's which show just some of the deterioration of the 'Longridge' model.
Notice the hull planking parting and splitting under and where the chain-plates anchor to the hull.
The distortion of rope coils on deck, indicating possible changes in humidity at some point?
Apologies to whoever put these fine images online for us to enjoy.

Mirabell61 got a reaction from BenD in Trying to understand the functions of some rigging components.
Hi Jim,
most of the square rigger models here at MSW are shown with yards rigged perpendicular to the ships length axis. As many of them are shown without set sails that is OK, but if the yards are braced, lets say about 45° for the mainyards, what would happen ?
The yards would leewards foul the the shrouds, if not the truss pendants come into action in the following way...... thus moving the yard a certain distance clear from the mast...
Then loosen and give way to the windward truss to allow bracing to the desired angle and also give a bit way to the leeward truss to just avoid friction with the formost leeward main shroud.
The yard now will be quite a distance away on the windward side
The illustration pic is of the braced mainyard from my "HMS Pegasus" build
