    Craig,

Since you went with the Pontos detail set, will you be representing your Mikasa with the anti-torpedoes net, surrounding it?
I think that this way of displaying the kit is quite spectacular.

Thanks so much Dave, Nils and the "likes". Dave, I spent many hours detailing the stove on my Essex only to watch it disappear completely as work progressed. I just decided to use my time on other things this time. Hopefully, I won't regret it later.

    Hi folks!

I hope you're all well.  It's been a while since I last posted and some may think that I haven't done much.  In fact, I've done a fair bit to the owner's suite, bathroom, dressing rooms, toilets, etc, most of which are really hard to photograph.  I've also moved onto the fitting-out of the two tender garages on Shadow's Lower Deck.  To these garages, I've added an assortment of cabinetry in order to give them a semblance of realism.  I've also started on her two tenders.  They're tiny and well, pretty rough at this stage.  Clearly, a lot more refinement and detail needed to be added to make them marginally convincing, but hey, one has to start somewhere, don't they?

I hope you like what you see in these photos.

    All the best!

    Cheers

    Patrick

The bow area is now done. This involved a variety of items:

Planking of the forward part of the interior hull, including deck clamps. This was done with various sizes of boxwood strips, as with the earlier similar work. I must admit that it was difficult work to fit the curves  and i'm not very happy with some of it. Fortunately, it will be barely visible.

Two breasthooks. There is no detail of these in the drawings and dimensions were estimated from book photos and limited info in the drawings. They were made from boxwood sheet, using card templates. I also had to drill the hawse holes in the hull to establish the position of the upper breasthook.

Upper deck framing was done in the same manner as previously, using laser cut beams and a couple of miscellaneous laser cut pieces.

The fore bitts. These extend down through the upper deck to the lower deck. They also provide the rear support point for the bowsprit, between the decks, so I had to fit a dummy bowsprit at this point, since it will be impossible to do this at any later time. The bitts are boxwood strip. The above deck cross piece will be added later.

The stove and a ladder. For the stove, the drawings show only a generic looking box without much detail. The book photos give no further help. Since the stove is very small, and will be virtually invisible, I decided to go with the generic box. It was made from styrene sheet and painted black. The ladder down to the hold from the lower deck was made from boxwood strip.

I will now complete framing of the main deck in the mid-ship area.

can full understand why you have chosen to build this model. The introducing pics are so fantastic and inspiring, wonderful lines of the ship and a "must" to get started with it.....

The Funnel Guards fitted. I made an error initially - I had the wrong one on the aft funnel and had to cut it off and replace it. You can see the mistake on the two arms at 10:00 and 2:00 on the rear part of the forward funnel, they should go to the edge of the funnel but I'd cut them too short. Oh well .....

Once they were painted the mistake wasn't so obvious :

The aft funnel has been glued to the superstructure. There are four small boxes surrounding the funnel - there should be one more 1/2 the size of the smaller ones, but after spending 20 minutes making it I breathed a little heavily and ..... no doubt I'll find it one day years from now, unless my dog has eaten it .

NOTE - The large pipe with the "rabbit-ear" cowl should NOT be fitted yet, despite what it shows in the instructions. I followed instructions and had to remove it again later . The AA gun platform has to go on first, and the bottom of the pipe sits on that (see post in next page).

The horrors of Macro Photography :

I've also finished all the pipes and supporting rods on the forward funnel. The two pipes are 0.3mm nickel-silver tubes, the rods are 0.2mm wire :

An overall view of the main superstructure to this point. A couple of coats of Testor's Dullcote are yet to be applied :

Finally got the seat pillars going. Still require some tweaking but the process is finalized and steadily producing identical parts.
Took me several evenings of trial and error while the solution was in my reference files, downloaded from Russian forum a while ago.

Sizing the small Fore-deck made me scratch my head a little, it is relevant because it will govern the positions of the other thwarts and according to the plan should result in the fifth thwart sitting just over the forward edge of the aft platform.

    9657
I notched my Foredeck to fit around the much reduced false keel at the bow which runs up to the stem, and extends just short of halfway between the second and third frames.

    9658
The first of the Thwarts butts against this Foredeck.
For the Thwarts I used the provided Limewood, veneered with 0.7mm Boxwood strip and the overall thickness then reduced to size.

    9661
I also made a spacer jig similar to that used by Mike4B in his build.
I would suggest that this is a useful item to ensure correct spacing of the Thwarts.

The Thwarts apart from the first one are not yet fixed, I will do that once the seat back has been installed and a little interior fettlin' is completed.

    Hi Doris,

Yesterday, I was surfing through Pinterest, as I often do, when I found this image of a VDV ship portrait.  It was not specifically identified as the RK, but it certainly seems to be her. If you haven't seen this, I thought you might appreciate the wealth of detail that is apparent, here:

    Dear friends,
I appreciate your kind words a lot and advice. Thank you very much. That is a great honour for me. I have to say I was thinking about HMS Royal Katherine for a long  time. Finally I have found the courage to start this large project and would like to share it with you...
Here you can see the complete stern of the model, some gunports and other details on the hull were changed to be more accurate and corresponding to the position in the painting of the real ship.
