    Hi Mates,

    Minor update. Working with some sections of the sails has proven to be – well not so much fun (for me)– venting here Hmmm---

    I got through the boltropes – pleasant enough. Then came the need to add various cringles. Now those are really hard for me. So far the least enjoyable part of this build.

    I am also not satisfied with the results. And  knowing that a reinforcement canvas wrap should also be included around each cringle has annoyed me.

    Tried several glues on sailcloth bits and could not find a glue that “disappeared”. Also these cloth rectangles are to be sewed as well – just not happening.

    I  re-did the martnets after buying some triangular deadeyes from WoodenModelShipKit (one of the vendors that advertises here). After fiddling around several times finally discovered how to lace without lines crossing over each other. Happy with the results.

    So this area (sail details) is slowing me some.

    Several of the other sails will not need so much extra work – and it will all be fun again (;-)

    This book is a real treasure.

    I might also suggest that his earlier book, "Reconditioning an 18th Century Ship Model Valkenisse Retourrschip of 1717" is even better.  It contains a mountain of useful information on his techniques, materials and photo documentation of his work on this valuable model.    BTW, the model is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA.                 Duff

    I agree - a great book.  When I have a friend who is a little interested in ship modeling I lend them this book. It certainly hooked me!

    I just got this book for Father's Day from my son and I wanted to add my very favorable impressions from page 1 to page 197.  Incredible, just simply incredible.

    I read half the book last night, finishing it up today.  The pictures are numerous, spot on and just simply go on and on.  As a builder of a plank on frame model I found this insight into an original 3 decker build very informative and will help me going forward.  For example it is okay to simplify some structures (the one piece after cistern as an example), or have a non functioning tiller.  It is okay to use 'SWOPEM'  (Situation Where One Part Equals Many).  Great to see was the presentation of 'Nobody's Perfect.'  A pictorial of things found on the model that were obvious mistakes or modifications made to account for fit by the original builder was awesome.  They happen to everyone and glad to see (once again) it is okay to keep them on the model.

    My only 'regret' (maybe too harsh) is that the middle deck memory board (picture taken form directly above) is only one page in size, whereas the rest are a full two pages in size.  I would LOVE to have access to these pics in a digital format.  SO much to take in and learn from.

    I expect to pick this book up many times.  When things are going slow, when I need some inspiration or I am figuring out how to advance my build in a particular area.

    A wonderful resource, a wonderful read and a book that I will keep close at hand.  I highly recommend, especially those that are either in a PoF build, or have one under their belt.  So much information about the internals of a ship model.

    Time for an update. I finished planking the next deck. Also had to do many redo's.
    I was used working with Caldercraft, where everything fits perfect..., but ok, after the redo's it looks ok to me.
    And as you can see, when I am building, Sansa - my dog- is always supporting me.

    @Edwin,
    .....produce a masterpiece... Thx for the trust you have in me And I think you mean that you participated in the four days march  from Nijmegen or as we call it "de vierdaagse van Nijmegen). well, respect my friend

    And of course the weekly update:
    I removed the woodstrips from the deck in front. I was not quit satisfied with it. Allready replaced it. Only have to put the pins on it....
    I also had to do some modifications. So I had to lower the frontside of the frontdeck because I found out that that piece of wood that coveres the front, wasn't high enough.
    And I did some painting. The black paint I will polish and then a second black coating. But that's for next week....

    @Edwin: thx and as you say, I have all the time in the world. I want to be busy with this ship for at least several years

    And a small update:
    Put some peaces on the decks. For the colour, I used walnut wood stain and Artesania oil. Till now everything fits pretty well. I tried with round timber if the holes for the bowsprit and the masts were in the right place and they did

    Time for a small update. Don't have much time at this moment to work on my SotS.
    Its nice to see how we all build our own SotS, with our own colours and modificattions

    @Thx edmay

    I just started with the first planking. Also the sails and the strips arrived this week, which I ordered in England. I will use 0.5x4mm strips on the decks, because those prefab planks look ugly.
    As you can see, I take my time with this build.....

    Well, since there has been no interest from the Forum, I'm going to go ahead and relist this with eBay. I am waiting until 3:00 PM Pacific time to enter the listing, should there be an interest please PM me before the listing time and I then will not list it.  After it's listed I'll repost the listing number here.  Thanks to all that looked.

    edmay reacted to Chuck in Is there a true POF kit in the market?
    Not really any out there.  Basically there is little demand but,  in order to design them there needs to be hundreds if not thousands of hours of work.   There are plenty of plans which have already been researched by renowned modelers and naval historians.    They include the drawn frames and frame parts etc. But they never had the desire to go into the kit business.  It would be very easy for a legit kit maker to reach out to these authors and pay them a royalty for their work.   But it would push up the cost for the eventual kits which are already expensive.  The Chinese, unlike the companies with ethics never reach out to these authors and that is why you see versions of Ancre Kits on the market from them but nowhere else.   Just because there was never a kit doesnt mean the company can use the plans and research from an individual without paying them or even asking for permission.

    I couldnt afford to pay Ancre a royalty would love to produce a kit of their projects....or possibly one of AlexM's designs or even Admiralty models or even Harold Hahn's son.   I would love to make a kit of EdT's clipper project.  But its too expensive if you do it on the up and up and recognize the author's contribution and creation.   What cost $1000 in China would cost $2500 made anywhere else.  Those Hahn kits are verbatim copies of of the plans he created.  I suspect you will see all of the aforementioned projects at some point available from China.

    That being said, I am hopeful Greg and David at Admiralty and Syren will reach some sort of agreement in the near future to produce an actual legitimate square rigged POF model kit.   I will talk to them very soon about it.   Speedwell look like a wonderful project.   All they could say is no....it doesnt hurt to ask.
