Once cutting this part from the part for my upper rigging like so, I then split the bottom eyelet so I could attach this to deck fixing. The other end on the Lycra shall attach another piece of etch with open hook once you sort out what length you want the Lycra to be, ie leaving it shorter to stretch it onto attachment point, it works surprisingly well. 👍

One thing that worked for me was using my extra etch to get bits for rigging and attaching Lycra to the parts, worked quite well I thought. Maybe similar etch parts can be purchased from parts for First World War aircraft? I cut pieces from the rigging etch to try this. Shall put some photos up to show sequence.

On the rigging side of things, the best chance of getting a likeness is by looking at lots of the old photos of the ship, wouldn’t go to much by what she is today at museum, just my opinion. Old photos don’t lie. But you do have to look and study them for a while, I’ve corrected my attempts more than a few times. Next photo made my mind up on this, must be an early one of the preserved ship. 🤞

Glued the mast in position using Gorilla Super Glue, gives you 10 to 45 seconds before bonding it says on instructions, so I double check the fit before applying the glue to mast then quickly lined up and inserted into deck, in ten seconds it was just about solid, about had kittens, but got away with it. At least I know what to expect when I come to do the main mast. 😂 And by the way it’s solid.

Put some photos up with rigging on the Pontos masts, definitely better building separately from ship, painting and rigging as much as poss, not a five minute job so that means it took me weeks 😂 Had to make a lot of alterations for my model to install forward jib to this mast and alter the height and length of mast spars, again all this I did by looking at old period photos and making my best guesses, quite happy though, looks reasonable close me thinks. Put some photos up now.

Hope everyone had a nice Xmas and have best health and happiness for this New Year. 🤛 Before I broke Of for my holidays I was hoping to get to a certain stage with the Mikasa during the holidays and actually achieved my coal, being the fitting of fore mast and some rigging 👍 This is my carrot and stick approach to this build, carrot being a new part of build and new appearance to model, stick being I’ve got to do it all again with the main mast 😳 OMG, love ship models, but sometimes it becomes so repetitive 🙄 Your always having to think what needs completing before you add your next part of build, in my case that would be the extra steelwork for supporting ships boats and completing the rigging on funnels before fitting the fore mast in place, you don’t want to be doing unnecessary work around a delicate mast for obvious reasons. Show some photos now of that job done. 👍

Xmas eve not best time to do this guys, hiding from Jacqueline just now 😂 just a quick post to show that I’m still trying to finish this model 👍 since I purchased the Micro Masters ships boats and other parts guess what, you got it I have to change my model again 🙄 sure I have built this model three times now 🤪. The boats mainly have three cradle frames per boat, sure this has to be correct so have to accommodate supporting these, so my solution works and helps with the rigging on funnel stays. May not be correct but it works for my model, also changed my rigging on funnels, changed for a lighter Lycra, now have 1/32 1/48 1/72 rigging for aircraft, using 1/48 for funnels and 1/32 for main mast stays. Got to go for my tea now, shall post some photos after I have been fed. 👍

The colour chart in model box shows the 50ft Pinnace does actually sit onto the boat deck as shown, it’s easy to do corrections when you can see what it is you are aiming at. 🙄 Another photo of how the foremast is progressing, just getting ready to mask up for painting, hopefully things start moving in the RIGHT direction now. 🤞

Hi guys, exciting times for me this week, received MicroMaster ships boats and can uncross my fingers, Ray in my modelling club says they are slightly better than Shapeways ? I was absolutely delighted with the products, these are seemingly made from the actual drawings and plans of said boats. Absolutely brilliant. I did say at the start of my build log that a nice resin boat set would change this models appearance and really enhance the final result, I rest my case, wait till you see these photos 👍 was sure the kit 50ft Pinnace was to large in scale, and never liked the shape, and the 32ft open boat on boat deck that I purchased looks like it is the one I need, very similar to the etch detail that Pontos did for kit part, which was a definite improvement, but nothing like this.

Think my next batch of plastic is by MicroMaster, so waiting to see what like their parts are like, member in modelling club says their quality is slightly better 🤞 Also fitted last parts of etch to hull, was waiting on small ladder rungs to complete this part. Last time of using the model on her side, since it doesn’t hold up so well with the masts like this, think they are a bit heavy, being all brass so the glue struggles to hold it on it’s side and that was just the lower part of mast. Decided to build these of the ship as much as poss before installing, doing foremast first.

You're certainly not alone, my better half has done similar, I've been building very fires 1/350 Taiho over the past year off and on and certain stages have resulted in some choice language shall we say, oddly that can be part of the enjoyment, the satisfaction that then comes when you achieve the next milestone with the project
Spot on, serious mood swings shall we say, so glad it’s not just me that runs out of patience. 🤛

Also a photo of HMS Vengence from 1899 also built by same yard, shows how all the ships were similar at this period. I did guess the area for these based on three cowels drilling deck for one in middle, only to realise that there are four cowels so refigured the position. So I now have a small hole to fix. 🙄 Since I am not using the kit 50ft pinnace I have the six cowels to play with from these, so hollowed out a little of the plastic then painted the inside the hull colour, only to change my mind and paint them same colour as the big ones along boat deck, this works better for me. You get an idea when you look at Vengeance, similar effect. 👍

You then ease this part onto the deck attachment and lightly glue with thin supper glue, then stretch The Lycra and hook up other end. 👍
