OK, here we are, all re-masked off and ready for paint.

Take a deep breath, cross those fingers, and spray! OK it looks good, now the real test - pull off the masking tape........
HOORAY! Just a little touch-up needed on the inside of the bulwarks from the first spray job.

So the masking didn't work out the way I wanted. I forgot to run a seal coat of clear after I masked it off, and the paint bled. You can look at October 2018 newsletter (www.bluejacketinc.com - newsletter archive) to see the technique. So on Sunday I re-sprayed the waterline where it bled. (*sigh*)

ScottRC reacted to JesseLee in Syren by JesseLee - FINISHED - Model Shipways - scale: 1:64
Ahh, line in from Chuck. Progress can continue.
Here are the latest pictures. It is odd how the camera shows things distorted like the masts looking out of line.

AN overall shot - next step is masking and painting the hull black.

ScottRC reacted to John Gummersall in Lincolnville Wherry by John Gummersall - FINISHED - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - SMALL
Wherry is in it's final home... Similar to the boats in the picture above it.
The rope that came with the model, while is probably to scale, looked a little "thread like". Instead I opted for a candle stick wick. Wick used to make candles. It is braided and looks pretty good. The fish net is an extra strong hair net used by female equestrians with long hair... That too looks pretty good to me as a fish net.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this build, but being a novice builder, I did make some mistakes. My main issue was mentioned earlier when I only lined up the plank marks at the bow and stern. I did not think the mark in the middle of the plank mattered. While the exterior of the wherry looks good, some of the planks on the inside are too close or too far from the next plank. Next planked ship I will pay closer attention.
Also as mentioned earlier it is not real obvious, to a beginner, the bow and stern of each plank... especially when they are all in water soaking. I would recommend, if you are not sure as to the bow and stern of each plank, to mark the bow and/or stern of each plank,,, just so you do not make the same mistake I made and install them reversed.
Have fun,,,, I did,,,

ScottRC reacted to drobinson02199 in 1929 Chris-Craft 38' Commuter by drobinson02199 - FINISHED - Dumas - Scale 1:12
Everything is now done except for the seat cushions. I have to be careful with those because they are made of the hated balsa wood, which has given me so many fits building this model.
This went fast because once you get the finishing done, it's just assembly. BTW, it's supposed to have two horns, but one of mine was broken.
The seats will be hunter green, which should look really nice against the dark wood.
Regards,
David

ScottRC reacted to Mark Pearse in Eiffel Tower by Mark Pearse - father/daughter build - WOOD
My daughter & I finished our co-build, a timber scale model of the Eiffel Tower. I'm not sure what scale it is, but it's about 550mm tall, the base & solid details are Kauri Pine, the structure is from pre-cut American Walnut 2x1 & 1x1mm strips, & the stage levels are 2mm plywood. The top is soldered brass, & the lighting is LED.
Our daughter has long been fascinated with this wonderful structure, & because she has always preferred to make something than to play with it I proposed we make something challenging together. It's taken more than 2 years & has been fun, difficult & a great experience all round.
A special note is on the the LED lights, which are especially nice & it's worth noting that they came from https://www.smallscalelights.co.uk , the ever helpful Jennifer Smith patiently helped us to resolve a wiring layout & sent the very nice & appropriate small spots. See how the shadowing on the walls is, that's just from these tiny spots. The spotlights are mounted on timber bases, similar to a timber cotton thread spool.
The shadowing on the wall is fantastic, & we kept on a table in the corner so that the lighting looks good & it won't get bumped.

ScottRC reacted to Vegaskip in Ship paintings
A different view of Scapa Flow
Hot out of the comfort zone!
'The Grim Reapers', Reaping the Barley and stacking the stocks, its somewhere above Scapa Flow, now why would I do that?.
At some later date I could still put half The Grand Fleet in it, or the High Sea' Scuttle!.

ScottRC got a reaction from lmagna in SS Stephen Hopkins by schooner - FINISHED - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - Liberty Ship
The crimping tubes are great. I learned of them when rigging the control wires on a 1/32 WW1 biplane. Saved me a lot of pain and frustration.

ScottRC reacted to RGL in USS Fletcher by RGL - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC
All the little bits thrown on, lots of touch ups to go, railings, and ship’s boats plus the last guns. Bit of rigging to go.

Man Rob, I hope things get better, they do say that working the areas that hurt helps with recovery, so maybe trying to work on the GR will speed up your healing.

With the mainmast done, it is time to work on the mizzen. So here's the dilemma: The mizzen goes through the aft cabin roof. If i drill a hole in the deck, like the fore and main, I will never be able to line up the aft cabin roof hole correctly at a later time. So I have to drill though both at the same time. But I can't install the aft cabin yet, there is too much other stuff that needs to be done first.
My solution is to do the minimal assembly of the aft cabin (sides and roof) and carefully tape it into its final position. Now I can do my drilling, then take the cabin off.

ScottRC got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper
Hi Rob,
My mother, who got me into ship modeling, bought a Scientific Sea Witch back around 1976 and never built it. I now have it and really think it would be a good candidate to try some small scale scratch building. It computes to 1/158th. I just need to get two other projects completed and then I can start the Sea Witch.

Hi Rob,
Your documentation of your rigging process is going to be invaluable for me since I am interested in working in the smaller scale. Everything is looking very refined.

Over the weekend, I worked on the bow fitting attachment points and drilled the hawse holes.
