McKay's Bounty drawings show a raised nub at the forward end of the keel that very nearly doubles its height at that point. I'm sanding it to the correct angle with the bench vice holding the Swiss pear. -

McKay showed scarf joints at uneven intervals so there's going to be one more piece coming. I have a microlux mini table saw that I think I'm going to go ahead and replace with Byrnes'. -
I spent a lot of time thinking about the measurements for the keel, but nothing really prepared me for the first rough cuts. These are going to be the keel.

Thanks everybody. I'm going to use the McKay drawings for this. I have my new sanders coming soon, as well as some wood, and then I will start the build log.

I like your idea to scratch build some rough pattern pieces to find out if you're on the right track before you use the expensive wood! What wood will you be using? -
Hey everybody. I started a scratch build in 2006 for some reason I can't recall now. I saw plans for a 1610 Galleon online, printed them to the size I wanted (I didn't know "scale") and started hacking and sanding my way through building the keel and stern. Then I started building the frames (I didnt know at the time but I was using the same style Hahn has on his plans). After getting through cutting the frames and sanding them to shape, I just got tired of it. Then last year my wife bought me the Mayflower kit by Model Shipways. I tore into it and had it finished within about a year. It was almost exactly the same ship I was foolishly trying to scratch build POF years earlier. But now I am ready to have another go at a scratch build. I'll be doing the Bounty at 1:48. I have McKay's book and I just ordered the pear. Wish me luck.

Who makes your brass fittings? What do they do to make them so dark black?

That walnut has the finest grain ive ever seen on walnut. I would probably use it more if mine looked like that.

I started this, my first kit, in January of 2020 and just recently finished it. I found this forum when I was already nearly finished so I'm posting some pics of the build here all at once.
