Hi Mike, no I have not started it yet, not brave enough! I have looked over it a few times and like you seen the “traps” (resin) and the good parts (P.E.). The resin seems awful delicate, as well as not very “clear” and i’m still puzzling how to get some parts out of the blocks still looking identifiable. Some are so small even if you did get them out successfully they would look like “blobs” if more than a few molecules of glue used! I will however try to build it as an experiment, as I fortunately got mine from an eBay charity shop for £20! So not much to lose by using it as a learning experience. Also the WW1 “dazzle” camo! 😳

Not many updates recently, but the yards are all pretty similar and not very photogenic with my phone camera, so I have not done multiple updates of similar looking stuff. But good news - the end of the yard(s) construction is here! 😁 Nothing for it now but to get down to starting the rigging over the Christmas holidays. I will be spending a long time studying plans and the AOTS book first! Thanks for looking in and the likes. 👍

Glad you have the angular turret in the kit. I think the rounded turrets were recovered from old Type 21 Frigates etc. and the angular ones were made new for some of the Type 23s. They were nicknamed the “Kryten” turret, named after the character from Red Dwarf Sci-fi Comedy series.

Welcome to MSW! As an experienced Fly tyer your seizing and knots should be good for rigging!

Hi Alan, an interesting subject, I shall be following along. I like the look of the T23’s, very hard working ships, particularly the vital TAPs role they have. Hope your father makes a good recovery and doesn’t cause you any more distractions!

You are spoiling us Chris, most (if not all other manufacturers) would say "like it or lump it!"

Thanks all for the "likes" and the kind comments. As a small update, I've been working on the yards, all fairly repetitive stuff so just a couple of sample pictures for where I have got to so far. And yes I have left the most complicated ones until the end! 🙄 - Fore and Main lower and topsail yards, hope to have these done in the next week or so. Thanks for looking in.

Interesting you are experimenting on the various blacks to use. I have used "Tenberous Grey" on my HMS Bounty I'm building now; it has a nice warm tone to it that I think suits wood. Also used the "Smoke Black" and "Rubber Black" from AK which can be used for surfaces that receive good illumination to provide some contrast to the more standard dull blacks.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
