All of the treenails have been completed and were made from boxwood. The end grain is quite a contrast. Here is the framing jig. I've also attached the keel to the building board. Moving on a bit slow but still moving! -

Hi Jim, Looking really good. I like your method of batch cutting. -
Thank you all. Pete. I just lay an old towel on the bench, grip the model with my left hand and cut with my right. That way I can twist and turn it as needed. A vise, for this, I find is to restrictive. If you had a piture of this you would think I'm trying to crawl inside.

Hi Grant. I am cutting mortices. You see some angle cuts on the ledges but that is my first step in cutting them out. I try to get the width correct and then I do the depth. Thanks.

Well here is a start on all of the carlings. You can see how I first cut out the plans and glue them in place and then work my way around cutting the notches and fitting the carlings. That's a start but there are a whole bunch more to do!

Thank all. You know we are our own worst critiques and if you don’t see‘em I not pointing them out! Oh and those who said I have beautiful knees have never seen me in a pair of shorts!

All of the knees are now finished and installed. Taking these pictures I noticed a couple of gaps I didn't notice before. Dang camera's. Next up will be to cut the notches for the carlings. Normally it's better to cut them while the ledges are off the model. That doesn't work so well for me. I end up with carlings that look like they are drunk. So I cut out the plans and glue them on the ledges and check them with a piece of wood laid over them to make sure I have a straight run. Them I cut the notches and fit the carlings. This will take awhile but I'll keep you informed.

Hi Jim, Greg, Pete, Ben and Mario. Thanks a lot. I sure hope it’s fun. I’m still thinking it will be past the sweep and gunports before the pressure will be less and the fun more. The treenails will be made from boxwood. I have had good luck with it so far. -

Ok we have a minor milestone here. I've assembled all of the frames now. The next step will be to treenail all of the chocks and then hopefully start raising some frames. -

Augie, Yes you do now back to work or your rum rations will be restricted! -
Thanks Ron, Ben and Larry. The first successful knee took about an hour and a half. I’ve got it down to almost 45 minutes now. Five down and five to go.

Popeye, Guillermo, Augie, Michael, Jeff, B.E., Greg, Christian. Thank you all for your continued support and assistance. It is appreciated more than you know. Jeff, with the great job you are doing on the Constitution I know you will build a wonderful Confederacy. Guillermo, Thanks. As with all builds I always look back and say oh I could have done a better job on this or that. But I think there is some of that in all of us. The only real change I would do is to not use Ebony. It might look good but it’s a bugger to work with and real messy.- 149 replies

Hi Joss, I'll let you know. I still have 6 to go. So far they are on the top of my list as the least amount of fun. A good challenge but the fun level is a little low.

Hi Ben, I would think that as long as it is big enough for the squares you will use for raising the frames and won’t warp or flex you’re good. I just used some stuff I had laying around. It is the same 8 ply plywood that I used for the Bomb cross section. Very rigid and flat.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Popeye, That’s a first for me. Another neat design by Chuck. Andy I know you can do it! Augie, The plans are the best I’ve ever seen but it’s Chucks design and outstanding instructions that put it way over the top. John, It’s always nice to hear from you. Thanks Daniel, The wood is Holly and it simulates white paint really nice. Thanks. Well we have completed our trip down memory lane. It was a fun one. Thanks again to all of you who shared it with me. Here are some pictures of the finished model. Cheers!- 149 replies

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
