Jim, start where you think it will be ok for you. If by looking at a photo of ANYTHING and it looks complicated to you, then by all means look at a lesser kit, weather it wood, plastic or all aluminum. You have to be the one that says you're a 1,2, 3,, or lever 12 builder. I build them for the enjoyment of seeing a bunch of plywood that ends up a wooden ship, I really could care less what people think of what I do. I have even sold 3 so far, and have given some away, My wife doesn't t want these dust collectors in the house, I have one, a 6 ft hull of the Flying fish on a chest of drawers in the dining room. Look at all the builds here there is a ton of info to use.

I do a lot of auto body work in my shop besides building the electric vehicles. after the base work is done as you think it is, you can buy a can of sandable primer. comes in gray and brown, put on from front to back , no X,ing it . then sand it smooth when you think its OK, Its usually not. Then take a can of black lacquer spray, spray the area fast to give it a light coat, we call this a guide coat, when you sand, the high spots will be gone, the low spots will remain. fill or sand. till its all smooth, your color coat will be very smooth, I keep most of the plank lines visible, not to look like a all fiberglass hull. if you want a high gloss look spray the color coat with clear, about 4 coats, then you can wet sand with 1,000 Grit wet /dry paper then buff. It will look like its wet, just like a new car look, . Sand to much or to hard and it will burn through.. its only for large solid areas

Carl Sagan once said ," If you want to make an Apple pie from scratch , you must first invent the universe" Same goes for the ones who try and make a perfect creation of a model ship , when you actually come down to it , it's impossible . What type of paint are you using ?? ,It may be the right color but no way can you reproduce the exact formula . This isn't about anyone or anyone's model just my observation. As much as we want to do the best we can , things just won't go right .. Take this .. when a drawing is made , for want ever , by the time it's done there may have been 30 changes to it , and none of the changes show up on the original drawings . This must be true when building old wooden ships let alone modern ships . Just how many changes ?? We,ll never know . The new modern kit models come real close , but it's a close rendering . I don't buy kits , to me that's building some one else's model . I don't try for perfection, I'll never achieve it , accuracy is important , but I won't lose any sleep if it's not 100% .I do it for the joy of doing it . The thing is there large and my wife is getting to the point these dust collectors need to go . But then she changes her tune when I sell them lolololol

I have a precision small table saw, it uses a very thin diamond blade, this dose not put the rips in the wood, it looks more like it was uses with a hot knife. Very smooth, no rips,

welcome , For me its been a long time since I was here. every time I retire, they drag me back . It seems we all wanted to start with doing a big project then reality sets in, it did for me. I always wanted to build something with my hands as a kid, Like the whole Navy, then end up doing a canoe.

Thanks ,I'll give them both a try ..

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
