Have made some progress, as you can see, now that I have figured out the rules, and procedures. Sorry to have hi-jacked other's posts. Please delete my inadvertent photos. I think the shrouds are going to be my biggest problem; glue or tie. Am going to try varnish, and if that isn't enough, tie the ratlines. I also tried, and here's one for you; a bamboo toothpick for the detailed painting. sharp point, gets into corners great! In the pics you will see plenty of touch-ups needed. Will get to them.

Sorry to be so late answering. Flood damage repair in house came first. To answer your question, no, straight build, sorta. I'm too old to spend the time that would take. 79 The details are nuts. 368 single blocks minimum to drill out for lines, for example. I intend to be fully rigged, and under full sail, running with the wind! here are pics so far. Not the best, but once it's in a case, I won't care.attachments.zip

I'm not sure if these will show, but if they do, this is my ship so far, that is, as of ^/1/2024. Getting there, no major mistakes.

Can anyone tell me what "vinylic" glue is? Beyond that, what glue do people use for shrouds and ratlines?
-
Beautiful work! I do have a question, though. Did you position the bowsprit halyard guide as per some instructions, or were you self-guided? I can find no solid instructions as to the positioning of the guide. and will glue really hold under the tension of the rigging? Ed K.

Not my first kit, but first in 40 years! I started building this model that long ago, but 2 kids, and life interfered. I always told myself, "Tomorrow, tomorrow". Well. tomorrow has arrived. Now, if I can live long enough, I WILL finish her. These pictures are a start. Funny, I was having trouble taking good pics with my old camera(a Sony dslr), but picked up an older Nikon Coolpix, and man, what a difference! This is one beautiful camera. Only one problem. It shows warts and all. Looking at the pictures, I see every little flaw. Lots of paint touch-ups to do. I know I am not up to the standards of some (read any) of you, but I will give it my best!

Parts identification in Soleil Royal kit
Late to Soleil replied to Late to Soleil's topic in Plastic model kits
Thank you very much. -
I am building Soleil Royal. I need help identifying what these holes on the inside of the hull are for. I think my kit is a leftover 1977 kit, as the parts are tan, but these holes on the inside of the hull I can find nowhere on the plans(original). Please help!
-
Yes, but the kit is an older kit, with older nomenclature, and Heller paint numbers. Trying to gather stuff before I begin, and numbers are no longer good, I gather.

I know this isn't the forum in which to ask questions, but in which forum DO I ask questions?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
