Vallejo makes a line of paint called model air - it`s pre-thinned & can be sprayed without extra thinning. They can also be brushed just as well. They are very high quality paints.

Hi folks,   more work today using a hairy stick thingy  and some of that colored wet stuff,  after masking off the yellow ocre I painted a fresh line above the wale, and gave it  several coats of dull black, after drying I removed the tape and was quite pleased with the result, I then moved up the hull painting in some of the details, till I got to the upper section where I decided to add some french blue.
It was a case of some touch ups including inside the gun ports and details with red ocre.

I am quite pleased with the color mix, will just need a couple of coats of flat top coat to blend it all in when its fully hardened.

    A few more pics.

Evening folks,  last time I posted I was going to fill the grooves in the upper hull with wood filler,  this was only so so sucsessful as I did not want to smother the hull with too much filler,  so after applying a liberal amount and letting it set, I was able to do some gentle sanding.
After checking the area over - the grooves were still there just not as deep.  so I decided to just paint the upper hull from the wale to line of gun ports,  first off I mixed some yellow ocre with flat white to lighten the color slightly, I came up with quite a plesent shade that I feel is more appropriate, I started on the side with the grooves and applied the first thinned coat - that was  dried with the aid of a hair dryer, I carried this on with  about 8 layers each dried between coats,  I then turned the hull over and did the same to the other side.
It covered quite well  Admiralty acrylic paints are always good with brush painting, and dry to a nice hard finish.
The black on the wale will need some touching up a bit.

Another update folks -  I lightly sanded the deck and did a small amount of wood dust filling, then I worked on creating some mast/deck supports, these were made using 1.5mm stock wood, I built up three flat sections from two strips glued together, then when set I sanded them to thier slightly different lengths, then after sanding smooth they were glued down on to the deck.
When these had glued I drilled out the centeres then used firstly using my fine rounded file then a half moon one, to get the correct size aperatures checking with my masts.

Evening all,   I finallly got round to finishing the deck planking, I think I have done a tidier job than my first deck planking, I added some thicker planks between the center sections, and will construct the frames around the masts.
It will need a gentle sanding then a couple of coats of flat coat.

Here is some dumb thinking. I was talking with a gentleman this morning and he explained to me what is : Stabilized wood.

In the Knife making business when they want a perfectly  stable wood, they use acrylic resin as a wood stabilizer. The penetration  is made by vacuum.   Could it work if I could put the model ship under vacuum?

Dry parts are almost done and all parts can easily be assemble or disassemble at this stage.

Druxey thanks for the clarification on the top.
After a lot of tries with the various threads I am leaning towards the off white Guttermann C Ne 50 the colour match is close enough I think I just need to deal with the fuzz that was not apparent until I looked at the close up picture.  so no work with coloring at least for this area, I take notice of the issue with the tea though Druxey, so thanks for that.

Here is the first attempt, I have a whole new appreciation for all you folk who rig a three master. I don't know how you do it!

    Hi Mates,

Shipyard has been very much part-time for the last couple of weeks – busy with year-end details, AND a so absolutely pathetic driver ran into my sweet car changing a lane without even first looking– so dealing with that as well. Her insurance accepted 100% liability.

Frank: glad that this technique is helpful for you as well
OC: yes hindsight is always 20:20 thanks for your visit.
    Martyn: thanks so much
Denis: thanks as always for your kind thoughts
Ferit: Looked at some but don’t think they will help

In the meantime I have, however located all of the main mast lines into their proper pin-hole locations.

And pre-coiled all of the needs ropes at one time. I was doing them one at a time before. This should help with the multiple installs.

Sharing my sad car situation. after and again after  -- Been to the body shop several times, checking in - the repairs were excellent .
PS: The Admiral thinks that I love this car more than her --- Hmmmmm

Pleasant holidays to all of you here at MSW

Thanks for the likes and looking in
All the carvings have been fitted to the stern so have cracked on with fitting the smaller cannons to the upper decks.
I have made some small blocks for the out haul tackle as the kit blocks are to large.
Once rigged up some rope coils where added. A few more to do but slowly getting there

    Thanks for looking

update - The mizzen yards are now completed. After some discussions with Pete(piratepete007)it was decide to mount the crossjack yard a little different than what the plans showed. It was mounted with a simple sling with no halliards & the lifts were rigged with deadeyes instead of running tackle. That yard was almost never lowered,so that  semi-permanent mounting was used. Still need to do the braces yet,as well. Some of the belaying points for the lateen yard were a little vague,so I rigged them where I thought would be best by adding a couple of cleats to the poop deck.

Mark: Thanks. That wood sounds incredible, I wonder if it was a special type of beech or if it was treated somehow. This stuff is incredible how it bends with just a little soaking but still would not come close to that.

H,H,: On the first layer I bevelled the edges, with this layer being beech and only .5 mm thick I didn't bother with the bevelling and it seemed to work good. The planks around the transom were soaked in water first, as there was a lot of lateral bending required in order to make them fit. Thanks for having a look.

Pete,O.C.,Frank - thank you all very much! By the way,the bowsprit yard also has a standing lift rigged with deadeyes, which is shown on the plans,so I don`t think it looks out of place to rig the crossjack yard similarly. An extra thanks to Pete for researching this rigging. It`s not that the plans are wrong - there are several variations in the rigging that could have been used in that time period.

Thanks for the comments and well-wishes.  Things are getting better but this time of year, they also get more hectic.

Well, I've been spending time in the shipyard.  A bit slow but made some progress.  The inside of the gundeck is planked halfway up and then I stopped to do the beakhead (? as I'm spacing some of the terminology at times).

First thing I did was fit the two beams to support the planks and also added a couple of small blocks to helps support the planks a bit.

    Planked it with boxwood....

Checked the fit with my dummy bowspit....

Sanded like crazy and then added two small pieces of ebony around the planks and sanded everything some more.  It still needs some more sanding but that's for later this week when (or if) I get boarded finishing the inner planking.  I need to do some filling so I'll collect the sanding dust and fill it then.  Once the real bowspit is in, I'll do the leather piece to seal the gap.

    Back to planking....

Hi Don - beautiful ship you have going there. Model Expo used to sell what they called flexible beech - they advertised that you could tie it in a knot without breaking. I don`t see it there any more, though. It was pretty expensive ,too, if I remember.

Congrats Mark - sometimes it's a little hard to 'step outside the square' (in this case the drawings), but you did and that is great. The comment you made regarding the crossjack is historically valid for that time period where the running lift rigging was replaced by a standing lift rigging. Your overall rigging from bow to stern is the best part of the ship build.
