    He Anton.

You are using the caulking on the hull planking?
Curious how that looks when it is finished.

Thanks Eddie and welcome to the build. Good to have you along for the journey.

I have done done a little more work on the cabin today but I have not taken any new pictures yet. Might have an update tomorrow evening depending how the day goes. The Admiral and I are out enjoying the band Blues Traveler in concert tonight so no new work. 😀

Bit of an update. Things are going a little slower. Fore mast is receiving more shrouds and doing the futtock shrouds as I go with them.
Things look a bit like a birds nest but still have to tension things up.

    So here I'am again.
It looks if I have done nothing but.....there are so many decoration that need to be painted.
And also all the beams that goes over the ship.
Between the beams there are coming also a lot of decorations .
But those has still be painted.
I'm feeling a little like Vincent van Gogh at the moment
But before you are thinking that I abandoned the model ,a few pictures.
    Enjoy .

Filling up the gaps on the Gallion

Things went less easy then I expected. But other Diana builders may perhaps take some benefit out of this. As the pics show : on both sides an eyebolt that receives standing rigging coming from the bowsprit obstructed somehow the operation so I could not reach into the corners. So one may want to fore these holes ( for the eyebolts ) just one or a few mm higher, building instructions were not that clear to me. Nonetheless I'm quite satisfied : this awkward void is filled up and the lads may feel a bit more comfortable...
First pic show the necessary tools and a try out made out of card

Now back to the yards !

    Hi Denis

I'm just catching up with your log!  My, oh my, what a heap of progress you've made on her.

I wish I had your speed and adeptness in getting things done.  Somehow, you juggle everything together (including birthday cake baking) and never seem to miss a beat.

    What's your secret????

    Cheers

Hello,  The latest marathon building session has resulted in the first phase being successfully completed, the framework of the hull.

The second gun deck was fitted and glued, again no problems were encountered. I cut to size the dummy gun carriages and fitted them as I had previously done. I said that I wasn't going to get involved with detailing too much but just in case I decided to do a bit I cut out the opening for the ships staircase which I might tackle, I then fitted and glued the main deck.  It was then that I noticed a slight error. When I fitted the bulkheads I mentioned that the second one was too high to form an even base for the forecastle deck so I lowered it by 2mm, with the main deck in place I saw that it had been the first bulkhead that was too low not the second being too high. Looking at the plans I now see that there is a marked sweep upwards at the front which I hadn't taken into account,  I'm really glad that I noticed it in time. I've now added strips to bring these beams to their correct position, the front needed raising by 4mm. I really must learn how to look and properly interpret the plans. I gave the whole structure a final sanding to shape and unless you think that I've forgotten anything I'm now ready for the first planking.

I am now looking at the size of this model and realize just how big a task the planking is going to be. I've put a picture of my last build, "Fly" against the Royal William as a comparison, I hope the planking will be like that only a bit more of it.

    1. The first deck is cut in half lengthways. You insert one half of the deck from the stern, and manouvre it into place. Then you insert the second half.

    2. No you don't.

Done a little planking of the stern piece this arvo. I've used some of the walnut planks which are surplied as the second planking but I won't be using these for the hull. Seeing as the stern will be painted beneath the carving, it was more of an experiment with colour to see if I was right in thinking it would look too dark planked overall in walnut. I've gone for a light maple plank which I'll use to plank the hull which while lighter I think will finish the hull off nicer. Also the walnut planks are 6mm wide so too wide for my scale planks of 5mm. I went for 5mm as with the placement of the wales, 5m planks will fit evenly between them.

So anyway haha here's the stern planked in anticipation for the hulls second planking. Also for an experiment I've used pencil on the plank edges to simulate the caulking, I normally use a felt tip pen as after sanding the felt pen still leaves a nice clean 'caulking' line. I think with the walnut the pencil is too light and so not defined however I think I'll stick with my tried and tested way of simulating with felt tip pen.
