I'd think the scale plastic armor guys must have some source for items like these. Maybe browse one of the plastic forums?

dvm27 reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thanks for the comments and the "likes".
The best laid plans of mice and men... an Admiralty meeting. We discussed progress and plans then "if I can't see it, why do it? You'll save a couple of months, right?". "Err.. yes. But I want to do it because it's there. I'll know it." Well, so much for argument. It's her ship and I'll do it.
So,.. I scraped the planking, added the oven and mizzen mast step and applied a coat of Wipe on Poly. And then moved to the gundeck.
Beams are in and the furniture on deck was salvaged from Version 1. It's all destined for the scrapbox except for the riding bitts. I just decided I can do better. There's a dummy bowspit in place. Carlings need to be added at various hatchways.
So... 4" of deck planking (except the center area which is 8") and 4" for the coamings. 4" thick coamings for the hatches on top of the 8" center area. What else... planking will follow the French style of following the hull lines. And the ceiling.
Sorry for thinking out loud... There's a pantry around the mizzen mast and rudder lines, a "cabinet" around the rudder, a step/storage at the transom along with all the other furniture on the gundeck. The partition for the wardroom/Great Room is on the table as far as possible. It was removable as was the captain's and executive officer's bedplace. I won't get into all the politics and issues with the wardroom not being the Captain's cabin, roundhouses (Captain's bedplace and dayroom), etc.
I'm done babbling.... I have my work cut out for me so here's pics.....

ok..........got all the main parts put together but not yet glued.....
the two stern towers are joined with a pointed roof rather than a slanted roof and i changed the beakhead somewhat....as in previous photo, the gun ports on the main deck will not be hatched...the gratings are basically put together too....oh...the domes will be shingled..bronze circular...
now for all the fiddly stuff...which will be much more relaxing.....the brain strain is done with....whew!.......ha....i'm learning to live with the swirly wood.....

Scuppers---------
The penetrations through the bulwalk have covers on Altair.
I thought the covers would look bad if they weren't identical so I decided to cut them from brass channel. The correct angles were formed using a combination of the disc sander and mill - with the settings being maintained through the use of simple jigs.
The uniformity was good and the test mounting looked fine.
I also got round to putting the 1st coat of poly on inner surface of the bulwarks and capping rail.

Young America - extreme clipper 1853
Part 178 – Stream Anchor
Ships like Young America carried several anchors. The two bower anchors for the model were covered in an earlier post. One stream anchor, one-third the size of the bowers was also modeled. These anchors were used for warping or sometimes for short mooring in very calm waters and winds. Obviously these would be much easier to handle than the large heavy bowers. There were other smaller types but I settled on just the three.
The stream anchor was cut in one piece from a .032" thick plate of hard brass. The outline was drawn on a blackened portion of the plate and cut with a jewelers saw as shown below.
The larger anchors were made in two pieces and soldered to save material and for the straightness of the bar shank, but with the smaller anchor this method made sense. The next picture shows the anchor and two oversized flukes cut from a thinner sheet.
These were oversized realizing the clamping for soldering would not be precise. They would be filed to the final size after soldering. The soldering set upis shown below.
The next picture shows the fabricated anchor.
The stock and the shackle on this anchor are soldered on. The last picture shows the anchor being secured on the starboard side in the vacated space used by the suspended bower anchor. With all anchors stored, this small anchor would probably have been lashed to the shank of one of the bowers.
Next chore: Making and fitting the supports for the swinging booms, that is, the fore lower studding sail booms.

Here is a great source I have used to buy in gross (144) amounts brass nuts, bolts and washers. Explore their site for other hardware selections and tools.

That's unfortunate news. They were a great source of supply and fast service. I'm sorry that they've folded their tents and gone.

dvm27 got a reaction from Canute in Scale Hardware reopening
I was hugely disappointed to learn that Scale Hardware, manufacturer or precision micro fasteners, washers, etc., is no longer in business. I've been unable to locate another source for items such as 0.5 mm brass washers, rivets and other simulated fasteners. Anyone know of a similar source of these products?

Thanks, Mark. BNA as actually a distributor for Scale Hardware. Note they have only a few items left. Once they've sold out that will be it.

@albert
Thanks for the nice feedback.
After the completion of the supports of the channels I looked back as the model looked without equipment.
Four years have now passed.
If I compare the state of the model from the year 2012 with today's so, it is already
sobering.
On the one hand, I find that a lot of details have now accumulated on the ship model. On the other hand, other model builders build complete models with full rigging during this time.
Nevertheless, I will continue soon ...

Perfect work, Albert. The only thing that would make it even better is higher resolution photos!
