Hi Nigel, your Red Dragon build is looking terrific,if you are going for red sails i think it will suit your model,i am also thinking of fitting red sails
but i think i will wait to see how your sails look.I am not at this moment able to do much building at the moment as i have just had a
knee replacement and its painful at the moment so i cannot concentrate very much, however i am following your build with great interest.
kit would be a really good start as a first time build.

                                                      Dearest regards Janet

Taking a much needed break from tying clove hitches (about 50% completed), I decided to have a little fun with the special "colors" this ship will fly.
Played around with giving them a more realistic look, but completely lost the ability to see and read the UNC Medical Center logo. So, as a trade-off, I chose to let them stand proud like a starched dress shirt.

I also created the name plate for the transom, which can hardly be seen without lifting the stern up high enough to see below the gun ports. Unfortunately, the stern design of these cutters just didn't lend themselves to prominent stern lettering.

I modified the canon rigging to more closely match the rigging on the USS Constitution.  I attach a photo of one of her cannonades for a reference.   It’s hard to see, but I carved a quoin handle, as well.  I also filled that nick on the bulkhead partition with Elmer’s Wood Filler.  I don’t have a photo of that, but it looks a lot better (even if no one will be able to actually see it).

Well, a month has gone by and I have completed the figurehead.

It is not as good as I had hoped, but it is better than I expected. The figurehead is not permanently attached yet.

Then I moved on to the upper head rails.

First I rough cut the shapes, then I temporarily glued the shapes together along with one of the upper head rails from the kit

Using the kit supplied head rail as a template I sanded them to shape on a Dremel shaper/router.  I started to use the sanding spindle I made for my mill but with the size of the pieces it was better done on the small shaper. Its nice to find a use for the shaper.

I continued to sand until I could see the sanding marks on the template's laser burnt edges

The channels have not been cut into the head rails yet, they have only been shaped to this point to make sure they fit before going through the effort to finish them.

I find the going slow since started fabricating most parts from scratch out of Boxwood. I want to build skills in preparation for a scratch build and I find it rewarding to "do it myself."

    John-

I built the OcCre Ulises Tug for R/C back in 2009 (she's in the Gallery).  She has a plank on bulkhead hull.  Of course there's every possibility that they've modified the kit but I can't seem to find a fiberglass version.

I feel really out of the loop Chuck, it has been over a year since I touched anything regarding modeling, and I was not real active for 6 months before that while taking care of my mom before she passed. After I got the shop set up, I had to spend several days rereading the manual and my own build log, just to remember where I left off, and where I was going next. I get fleeting moments of recall of knowledge I had acquired, but now feel like I am a complete beginner again, I hope as I work it comes back to me.

Well after a long protracted absence, I am happy to report the new drydock has been completed and I can resume modeling. I must say I really have missed it. Planking of the Syren has resumed, ad I hope to have some progress to show next week.
    Here is the new drydock

I've taken the first step in the deck planking process. I made and installed the margin planks and waterway. I am doing the deck planking in holly, so the the margin planks were done with holly sheet and strip. The bow sections were cut from holly sheet, using card templates. The remaining sections were done by edge bending holly strip. The small pieces at the stern were shaped and beveled to fit. The waterway was made from 1/32" square strip that was rounded and painted red before installation.

I also painted black the areas under the gratings and skylight. Finally, before moving on to the deck planking itself, I drilled holes for the bulwark eyebolts and ringbolts. This was done now to avoid interference during drilling from the deck structures that will be installed prior to deck planking. The eyebolts were installed now. The ringbolts will be done at the time that the guns are installed and rigged.

Guess I did get the rigging knocked out a little quicker than even I expected guys. Everything just came together so nicely.
Rainy weather, wife out of town.... Or it could be the meds they've got me on.
Wonder if I double up on them, could I fly like a bird?

Chapter 14.  The timberheads were made pretty much as outlined in the manual except for the pins added to help position them on the cap rail.

I also added the two ladders amidships.  I needed to rearrange some of the rope coils that interfered with the ladder side rails.

The transom was notched for the stern davits very carefully.  Prior to installing them the faux sheaves were cut into the outboard ends. Some wood filler was required to fill the gaps between the davits and transom and then everything was painted.  The cleat was added after the davit was glued in placed.

The boarding panels were carved to simulate a raised panel; it’s hard to see with them painted black.  They were then installed on the cap rail along with the hammock cranes.  After installing these I noticed a mistake that I made with the cap rail that wasn’t that obvious until the cranes were installed.  The cap rail is not level and angles inboard a bit.  This angle is more apparent now with the boarding panels and cranes in place, but at least both sides are angled equally so they match. Nothing I can do about it now.

I like the contrasts.  Maybe a thin kick plate to cover the ding.  I know it's probably not 'authentic'.  Or maybe some filler given some light stain coat(s)?

    Ken,
That looks really good, I too like the contrast. The others who have built this are right I am sure, you will never notice the nick. If you think it may bother you in the future though, fix it now, maybe just a light dab? Even if its darker it will tend to fade away. Either way, it looks great.

Ok Here are the most recent. I struggled with the stern because I broke the upright repeatedly. I eventually did the best I could to align things I used the windows as patterns by laminating wood onto the  frames then tracing the windows onto the beefed up frames until the windows fit perfect.

That's one of Chuck's little cannons. I did the quoin handle with files. The cannon kits are exquisite. I did one of the ship's boats as a break. It was quite challenging. The design is excellent.

The Castings for the stern aren't two bad except for the quarter gallery drops. They are terrible. One did not even fit a laser cut piece designed for it.

I look forward to starting the interior work.

I highly recommend this kit especially if you get Chuck's upgrades (Marvin the Martian  figurehead replacement, cannons, cannon carriage kits etc.).
