Ahhh now I'm with you.. have some ordered already would you believe, didn't know what they were called mind you! (coming from the States together with one of Chucks C18th Longboats, they were both going for half nuttin so couldn't say no.. € 35 to the door!) I'll probably find I too have an allergy to Walnut Planking but for a different reason to you bud.. perhaps I'll continue down with the present stuff after-all, though it would be a shame to waste the Walnut ! Oh Well. All The Best Nigel Eamonn

Hi Kester, thanks for stopping by, I'm back on more familiar ground now with full length planks, but as I mentioned I'll keep your suggestion (at least in spirit) by putting a little 'notch' into then to simulate butt ends.. reckon I'd be still planking this time next Christmas if I were to continue with Scale Planks couple of planks let them dry, next day couple of planks let them dry (it was taking 2 days to do a single strake.. as I mentioned though that that might just have been me and my 'super' planking skills!! !) Oh and Regards 277.. your secret is safe with me!! I'll never tell !! Take Care Eamonn

Hey There Guys, I was deffo getting the 50p effect Nigel but I addressed it with a Scraper Thingy (A Stanley Blade held at the top in a special gripper type of affair) which I pushed straight down onto the offending 50p edge and cut it off (erm Nigel Mate.. wots a Riffler File ? though I did run a needle file along it a few times to even things out a bit, still a complete pain in the 'stern') Jason.. Looking forward to planking !!! you sadist (admittedly planking is probably a Summer Holiday compared to rigging!!) Rubber Bands.. Careful Now ! I'll be going over to the Walnut Kit supplied planks shortly, though I hear that they are Brutal (Irishism for not very good at all.. ) Thanks for checking in and for all the Likes folks Eamonn BTW Nigel & Jason I was over on 'Name the Ship' for a few goes, missed ye guys over there.. There wasn't an Arklow Rowboat to be seen!

Hey There Nigel, thanks for dropping by with some welcome advice mate, always appreciated.. yea, that last laid 'wide' plank will allow me to complete the transitions more easily, laying it in the 'Full' has smoothened out the run too (at least I hope) and as a result things should pick up now speed wise. Tapering began at the bow a few plank ago, weirdly I didn't need much if any tapering at the stern in the 1st layer!, will have to keep an eye on it with this layer though. Were you watching the Rugby at the weekend? looks like England or Ireland for the 6 Nations, with England having the potentially much easier last game! Typical !! Eamonn

Ok Folks.. Small Photo Update (just to show that I haven't forgotten you) Transom Planked, Lower Transom Planked and a full Strake of planking done each side ! I wanted to get the lower Transom planked before continuing with the Strakes, as I wanted the strakes to overlap the Transom planks.. if you follow! The newest strake on both sides is a wider plank as there was a bit of shaping to be done on it towards the bow and at the meeting of the transom.. it is also a Full Plank.. ie not my scale plank lengths (all this area will be painted anyhoo) But in keeping with the suggestion of Kester (to continue with the Scale Planks all the way to the keel) I shall put a subtle 'notch' in the appropriate place to simulate Butt's. Don't know about ye Guys 'n Gals but I found that the individual Scale Planking (8.5 cm lengths at this scale) was taking an absolute age!! I was spending as much time laying a single length as I was laying a Full length.. That Might Just Be Me Though By The Way, there is enough Pegs, Pins & Clamps in these shots to keep everyone's attention, with the addition of some discrete Rubber Band action too for the real aficionado's (You Know Who Ye All Are.. For Shame) All The Best Folks Eamonn

Thanks Andy, now I have the idea (can see how the whole sheave 'arrangement' rotates inside the circular housing) I'd only have been familiar with the Roller Type. Thanks Again Eamonn I like the more contemporary builds too, and always thought those SD14's were .. dare I say it.. pretty !!

Spot on D, the infamous 'miss match' 1988 Cup Races.. indeed KZ1 was truly amazing, virtually wakeless for so big a boat, but Mr Connors threw the 'Cat' at them and that was that I think the New Zealand boys closest look at the American's was at the starts, cos once that Start Gun went off so did they.. Love him or hate him Big Dennis Connors was a great racing sailor! Over to you D.. Eamonn

Thanks Kevin, and mine is in the same line as yours.. that is a Racing Sail Boat where the crew Hikes Out, admittedly in this boat the Deck itself is extended out so you can Hike in comfort.. well sort of comfort anyhoo after all it is a serious racing machine.. The boat in question is the one on the back ground, and yup she is HUGE, those wee dots along her side are the crew 'hiking out' Am off to bed now folks so I won't be around again for a few hours. All The Best Eamonn

Just found them.. wow, that is some of the oddest looking racing I've seen in years.. I've 'Hiked Out' on racing yachts but that is ridiculous and it is totally brilliant !! Log Canoes from Chesapeake Bay ? Thanks for bringing them to my attention Kevin, as I said they are beautiful machines. Eamonn

Don't know what they are Kevin.. but they are beautiful !! Thanks for showing them. Eamonn

Far too clean Ollie, let me at it for a few hours with some sawdust and tiny lengths of timber (which I'm absolutely positive will be useful if not vital later!! ) Oh and most importantly Tools every where and in no order (just so you can spend half your build time playing Hunt the Pliers and other fun games like that, am thinking of Patenting those 'Games' and selling the idea to Hasbro.. think of all the hours of entertainment kids are missing out on! ) All The Very Best Mate Eamonn Glad you are feeling so much better by the way.. I can take my mask off now eh!

Well Done D. you are spot on with that, she is indeed the Irish Spruce! As I previously mentioned there are many who believe her construction costs were the reason for the demise of Irish Shipping Ltd. the company folded only about 1 year or so after taking delivery of the vessel (Irish Shipping Ltd was a Semi State Body and the then Government pretty much insisted that the ship be built by an Irish Company in Cork despite being MUCH cheaper to construct abroad, though personally I believe it goes further than that as the reason for her construction in the first place, essentially to transport coal from Australia to Ireland, was negated by Cheaper coal from Poland. There were some unwise charter terms also implemented by the company for it's various vessels all of which (taken together with other issues) can be construed to have caused the demise of ISL, so it is unfair to blame one individual vessel.) Over to you D. Eamonn

All Righty Folks.. found something of a kinda similar vintage to Davids, not a great photo but then again if you use the clues you won't need a better one! (for a start there aren't too many good photos of this ship available, as she wasn't with the Company for long, some say she 'broke' the Company but I think that is unfair to the vessel) She was (and to my current knowledge Remains) the largest vessel ever owned & constructed by her Country (she was an approx. 72,000 DWT, Panamax Bulk Carrier ) Don't over think it folks.. I wouldn't post an impossible to find ship (though as I mentioned photos are rare) use your knowledge, its all there in front of you! That's enough clues I should think!! The Race is on Guys.. Sail 'er Easy Eamonn

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
