Jmaitri, thanks for your kind remark.
late last night I set up the rope walk and had a go with the Hemp.
3 strands of 6lb
made some rope that is .071 inch diameter
3 strands of 48lb
made some rope that is .132 inches in diameter
That's all for now, off to help my friend again today.

Mark, The pads are old 1000 grit sand paper so I wouldn't slip as I went in.
Popeye, Placed wide blue masking tape covering the deck and the first coat is drying as we speak.

Thanks gentlemen. I hope to have a real update in the near future.
Augie,
You might be right. I managed to miss Myspace and am diligently avoiding Facebook. I do like the "like" button here though.

popeye the sailor reacted to Richard Bradfield in Willie L Bennett by Richard Bradfield - Model Shipways - 1/32 Scale - first build - Skipjack
I finished all the major painting, touchups and constructed the display stand today. Next step is the cap rail, install rudder linkage, and more ironwork (when my supply of brass gets here). Here are a few pic of the where I am at the end of today. Nothing is glued down yet. Gonna take a break for a few days and get back on it Monday.

popeye the sailor got a reaction from Sjors in Half Moon by popeye the sailor - Billing Boats - 1:40 scale kit
correct! she will get some stain. I have quite a bit of the Billing's Mahogany stain that I'm going to try out. once the hull is fully planked, this can be done, but there are areas on the stern and bow that will need to get masked off for paint. I want to do something with the decal maker, but I have a feeling that some of it will need to be done in paint {red / white striping}. I'm taking my time on the hull planking as you can see........I want the planks fitting good, in order to get away from double planking her. I've done a bit more....hope to have the planking completed soon

popeye the sailor reacted to SkerryAmp in Willie L Bennett by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 1:32
Thanks all for stopping in and for the good words; they are appreciated.
Slowly but surely the Willie takes shape.
Augie: The keyboard was the product of necessity since the Blue Shadow is in the panavise and, well . . . something else is in the keel clamp (but I figured 3 build logs is enough to keep up with at the moment) and the Mayflower is in the foam cradle. I am out of things to hold my ships!!
Popeye: Thanks!! The deck framing was a lot of fun on this one, very different from anything I had done plastic, wood or otherwise. A visible ship would be very cool; this one actually has plenty of things to do on the inside - I am just not quite yet up to the task on it. A couple of the other willie builds are doing it though. I will get there - heck, look who i am talking to - YOU should do one!
Bob: Thanks for stopping in, the more the merrier!!
Gerty: YAY! There's Gerty! using yours as some inspiration my friend!!

popeye the sailor reacted to SkerryAmp in Mayflower by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 5/32" = 1'
Hi Guys, thanks for the pop in!
Sjors: Thank you sir! I do have a bit of clean up at the bow, once the sides went on there is a bump that is very noticeable - and am very much hoping the second planking lays well - the hull feels smooth even though the lighting makes it look otherwise in places; playing tricks on my eyes I hope.
Mark: Very true, very true - live and learn! Heck - if I learn how to cover mistakes well that is a part of the battle I guess!
Popeye: Hadn't though of molding... hmmmmm, now ya gave me something to think about. Love your half moon by the way!!
More in progress. Last night finished the deck work up to where it needs to be and attached the stem, keel and stern. Tonight will be working on on the backside of the stern and hopefully have something to show for it soon!

I ordered a plinth for Pegasus to be displayed on, it is ash with a danish oil finish. I'm really pleased with it.
I've also taken a few pics of the bow with the light on under the foc'sle:

Planking still looks great Popeye,
Are you let it this way when finished or you give her a stain or varnish coat ?

popeye the sailor reacted to Navis Factorem in HMS Bounty by Navis Factorem - FINISHED - Amati - 1:60
Running rig update.
With the spritsail yard fitted and rigged the spars are now all in place.
Now for the staysail running rigging, The Amati kit describes some of the rigging for the foreward stay sails on the bowsprit and jibboom but doesn't mention the other staysails between the masts. Details for these can be found in McKay and Lennarth Peterssen but I have a bit of a problem with where the ropes are going to land on the deck. I have just about run out of belaying pins and rack space. The pin racks were installed fairly early in the build and I hadn't done enough forward planning to pick up the problem.
Not too sure what to do!
I think i will fit the rigging for the foreward staysails where I have available belaying pins and give the rest a miss.
A more complete rig is something to look forward to in the next build.
I still have a few small details to complete such as the stern lanterns.
I am going on holiday next week so there will be a bit of a gap in progress for about 5 weeks.
Cheers,
David.

popeye the sailor got a reaction from SkerryAmp in Mayflower by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 5/32" = 1'
at least yours is completely planked..........I'm still working on the Half Moon! LOL! {just kidding} gaps........hard to see my friend but, that's why they invented molding..........1 mm wide thin stripping really does the trick. then there are the mating joints, especially if it's that really thin plywood........you do a batten along the edge, and watch it magically disappear. you have a fine surface for a second planking, to be sure your doing a great job.....keep it up!

it covers some of the really kool vowels though {I'll take an 'o' for fifty, Bob} man......I love that deck framing.......it looks really cool!
now, that would be cool.........a boat hull done like the ' visible V-8 '..........hate to be the one to taper those planks though
nice work on the cap rails.......looking forward in seeing the deck planking!

I find it hard to see as well........guess I'm too 'tuned' into looking at the big picture place a finger over your lips and repeat after me:
"if I do not speak......they will not hear.........if they cannont hear.......they will not look.........if they will not look.......they will not see"
or........if you like the old addage:
" seek, and ye shall find........if you don't, then never mind." I still say you did a splendid job

Looking at Mike Mott's thread, I'm not the only one taking time away for 1:1 (or 1:2 or whatever) projects..
Aldo, thank you very much. Have you been able to manage any hobby time lately?

popeye the sailor reacted to William Blackmore in HMS Victory by dafi - Heller - PLASTIC - To Victory and beyond ...
Thanks Guys. I think it may be an issue with age. This kit has been in my stash since the early 1990's. I have also had the same issue with one of the Heller "Conqusitador" kits that I found on the evil bay site. This was one of the very early versions of this kit. Being one who believes that kits were made to be built, I set to work on it only to find the same issue. In fairness to Tenax I have used it for years with few problems, but it does occassianlly do the same thing to some pieces of Evergreen stock. I also agree with Andy, and I do use the Ambroid as well. Good stuff but stinks to high Heaven. I guess in some cases it may be useful to go with some basic Testor's glue. Thanks for the input. Cheers!

I admit those darn capstan bars about put me over the edge.
Got the starboard deck stanchions in. Just have to do the Port side and the cat heads and anchors and the hull is done.

Popeye,
I'm doing about the same... the hot weather brought out the weeds in the lawn..<sigh> Plus fighting for time and sanity due to a mad crunch going on at work.
I'm currently lining off the hull from the wale to the caprail to get a sense of the flow and lines as well as spacing. Nit-picky work but I think it'll pay big dividends later.

sorry Mark..........Murphy isn't done with me yet......I took the Toyota Corolla to work today. I had to stop mid-trip home....the exhaust decided to drop out and I had to do something to keep it from dragging on the road. good thing I left the bungie cords in the trunk
I'm smiling.........
not to worry though Mark.........when I can get to the table......nothing will bother me......the Goth will continue!

You have my utmost sympathies in your time of Murphy-induced misfortune.... But I have to be honest... The longer you keep him busy at your place.... The longer the rest of us have breathing room against our own personal misfortunes
(Provided, of course, he keeps his attentions squarely on your fleet of motor vehicles..... And not your ships... )

Looks great, Ron. If and when you run out of things to do on this one, there's always the next one.
