after adding one more row of planks I decided that it was time to trim down the excess at the bow and stern. this to ensure I follow the same profile as the keel . they will need to be sanded down to about 4 mm in thickness but that will be done when all planks are on you may notice that on the 3rd bulkhead it seems like the planks are not nicely flowing but that is because from there I am widening the plank till its at full width . I will need to do this for the next few planks here a view from the bow

hello Scott I don't do more then one plank on each side , but it depends, the planks at the stern twist a lot so they need clamping between every bulkhead to keep them tight against the previous plank. as I only have 7 (1 broke) I can only do 1 plank hello Augie yes each off the planks I am adding now need to be tapered , the edges angled then soaked for pre bending before it goes on but honestly I am enjoying it, slowly you can see the ship go from a skeleton to a well rounded lady hello Don welcome good to hear there are others building her . will be following your build log too and yes it is a good kit

my first attempts at tapering by hand (that was on the Virginia) didnt go to well, too much irregularities in the thickness, not too mention sore arms lol i got a better result this way so i ll use that to taper all the masts on the GF one day hopefully i can afford a small wood/metal lathe

well Robbyn mine broke off in the middle and at the end. the problem is that these dowels are only like 4 mm in diameter so without something to hold them at the end as with a lathe as soon as you put some pressure on it to sand you bend them. after the first breakage : the solution is to first lightly sand all over to make sure its all smooth, i wrap the sanding paper all around it and then use my two fingers of my other hand to let the dowel spin on top (the drill is set to about half the maximum speed) stil dont understand how the top of the other broke off , except maybe the quality of the wood

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
