Not much time in my world for the Bismarck lately  but slow progress is still being made:

I was going to use the conning tower off my old kit but I ended up reworking the new one instead... I want to show the the conning tower with the thick "bank vault" doors open and they just didn't work out all that well on the old one. I also got the PE and paint on the bridge and next layer up as I work my toward the top of the forward superstructure "wedding cake"

Since I had the airbrush out also I hit the couple of the Veteran Models AA guns I had previously built... these things are the definition of detail insanity!

Quick post but it wasn't quick to build 'em:

... and VS the stock kit piece:

Man these tiny little guns are A LOT of difficult work for me! The magazine racks on the base are especially nightmarish to put together.

Well, I could not wait..... First two pieces of deck:

These are glued with two components epoxy glue. It gives you plenty of time to position perfectly the parts and clean very easily with isopropyl alcohol. The end result is very sturdy although somewhat flexible. Just what I needed. You have to apply the glue very sparingly, as it will try to seep through the gratings. A soft and clean rag with alcohol, and it is all clean.

Now, for the claustrophobia lovers, an inside shot:

    That hull is massive.

    Some progress:

    1) installation of magnets to hold the starboard half hull to the deck and port hull. It is working very well and give me a sturdy and full hull to work with. This is very important to position perfectly the PE on the deck. In the end, I may glue the other half, but there is no certainty. It could stay like that and be fine.

I may still add a couple of magnets towards the bow, below the torpedo doors. The half hulls are so big and long, there is a slight warping that irritates me.

    2) There is the whole enchilada, holding with just the magnets:

Now is time for the exciting part: THE PEs !!!! A novelty for me.

For the time being, they are just resting on the plastic deck. Maybe tomorrow, I will start gluing them, starting from the bow.

Just FYI Semore... there are no portholes on the hulls of the Iowa class ships. The kit has holes just above the waterline that are molded the size of portholes but on the real ship they are drain scuttles.

I'm not drilling them at all; I use various globe/egg-shaped cutting bits with the dremmel.  I get an even thickness by holding the pieces in front of a light... after a certain depth is achieved, the thinner the plastic the more light comes through it and you can use that to judge how deep you are cutting. With a little bit of practice, it becomes fairly simple to thin the bulkhead from behind enough to open the windows/portholes and get a very thin/even "frame".

Those are the kit molded windows ground out from behind... I grind out all the plastic minus the "frame" while being careful to not melt the plastic or go all the way through to the exterior bulkhead. Makes for neat looking open windows and you don't have to sand the edges at all.
